Target - No Warcraft? Here, Try This Poorly Kitten
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 10:40 AM on August 27, 2008
Gamers - the next time the game you want is sold out, rest assured that Target has got your back.
With their highly experienced games experts in combination with a multi-million dollar expert system derived from US Military AI tech, the retail giant is able to calculate the exact alternative to scratch your gaming itch.
Or not. It seems that at least one store is convinced that if you can't partake of massively multiplayer online action roleplaying in darkest Azeroth via the World of Warcraft Battlechest then the next best things is.. er, looking after sick virtual pets in Paws & Claws Pet Vet 2: Healing Hands.
Sure, its funny this way around, but wait until you see what happens when an old lady goes in to buy Animal Crossing for her six year old granddaughter and ends up coming home with Dead Space...

Sorry, we are sold out of :"Paws and Claws Pet Vet: Healing Hands". Please Substitute: "World of Warcraft Battlechest".

So what you're telling me is that I shouldn't have bought Paws & Claws Pet Vet 2: Healing Hands? I trusted Target that it'd be the same damn game!
Who can I trust if I can't trust Target's "substitute division..."

Wow. I mean... seriously, do the folks at Target even know the difference between World of Warcraft and... any other video game that's out there? I'm just surprised they didn't suggest TurboTax, or Norton Anti-Virus, or something like that.

@mpmaley: That's what the employee told me, but feel free to notice that I *did* say "generally the only thing the substitute suggestion has in common with the original is price" which doesn't contradict what you said. My take is that - assuming you work for Target and maybe know better - this guy must be running to his boss for clarification on everything.

@Cloral:
That's not how it works @ Target.
How the substitutes work is that someone walks around the whole store scanning all the ad items. If we don't have them in the back then they are required to do an instant substitute. So in reality the person that scanned that item probably had no idea what Warcraft is and just picked something else that was 19.99

I am sick of your bashing! Have you guys ever tired Paws and Claws Pet Vet 2? No you haven't so for all you know it could be just as good as WoW. Obviously the first one was good enough for a sequel after the first one was just released a year ago.
How many sequals does WoW has??? 0 thats right and it toook them almost 2 years to come out with just 1 expansion pack!
Next time try the game before you bash it. god you make me sick

These "substitution" suggestions always confused me with their complete and apparently intentional lack of sense, so I asked a Target employee who the hell comes up with these printouts. Apparently, the "Manager" dreams these doozies up and yes, it's all about what either needs to be cleared out (too much inventory) or is being pushed by corporate ("hey, we got 200k of these in at half price, start pushing") and generally the only thing the substitute suggestion has in common with the original is price. So it's basically crap and totally worthless information that isn't worth the read.
Besides, the best game deals seem to be at Blockbuster these days.

Lol, I loved the substitution system at Target when I used to work for my local store. Instant subs are up to the discretion of the team leader or executive working at the store that finds a Sunday ad item completely out of stock. Of course they like to pass the duty of selecting an item down to the line as well. The first time I had to do an instant sub I had only returned from school about 2-3 weeks prior (they implemented it a few years ago while I was away at college). I was essentially told to find something similar (table for a table, 4 drawer dresser for another 3 or 4 drawer dresser, etc) and then make signs. So, it was always pretty hilarious to see the instant subs over in the electronics department since the variety of similar items was big enough to continually get events like this one happening.

I'll only except the substitute if Target can guarantee me that I can import any of the pets I recuse and heal into Azeroth in "Wrath of the Linch King" as the most epic of mounts.

Meh. Target just does this to clear inventory. I've seen them sell good, but poor-selling PC games for $3, and shove the lousy games they've had for years to the forefront with "sales" to get rid of the excess they bought.

Technically, the instant substitution is just for computer record-keeping (so the store can track that signage is all being handled properly)... the neat thing about Target is that the actual substitution policy is a bit different. Any time a sale item is out of stock-- and it's not marked as non-raincheckable-- the consumer can substitute any like item that's not currently on sale for the missing one and receive the same percentage off. Some stores choose not to honor this on video games, but others do-- usually depends on the store leader. But for most of the goods in the store, it works. And it can get funny. Store out of the 26" 720p LCD that was 30% off on the week f the Super Bowl? Get 30% off the 42" 1080p model instead. All out of the 32MB thumb drive that's half off? Get 50% off the 4GB one instead.
Try it. Be a smart consumer.

I dont think the battlechest is the MMO. Isnt that the RTS one? At least thats the way it was for starcraft, but SC doesnt have an MMO. Kinda reminds me of when butters wants to play hello Kitty on his PC than join all the other kids in WoW.

Yeah, Target's instant substitutions are pretty retarded in the electronics department. For instance, one week at the Target I work for, we were out of Warioware: Touched, and the natural substitution was, of course, Imagine: Animal Doctor.
On the bright side, being sold out of Xd cards one week netted me a $15 2GB SD card. Still a stupid substitution, given that they're different card types, but great for people who matter... like me.

Oops...this is what game-oblivious people do. It's pretty harmless when they're in charge of making up signs and such like this. We all know how bad it can be when they get a microphone and/or TV camera though.
However, Paws and Claws is automatically better for not having a monthly fee. =P

@mariospants:
What I said is how we do it at my store which I assume is the way it's always done. They're supposed to find a product of similar price and use that.
@Kainy:
This is what happens when you get someone doing substitutions and they're either new, don't know the products, or just don't give a crap.
I love Target in some ways and hate it in others. The problem w/ the store is they higher a lot of high school kids (I was one way back when) and then shift them around. One night you're here and another night you're there, so you don't become an 'expert'. Electronics though should have smart people but they're not the ones that shoot the substitutes, it's the people that come in @ 6am....enough of this Target talk ^_^

@mpmaley:
My store was the opposite. Still hired (missed that one in your post ;P) a ton of high school kids (I started at 16 almost a decade ago, even though I stopped working there just over a year ago), but once the team leaders at my store got an idea of how well they functioned in each area, you could usually find yourself in that same area for 90% of your shifts on the sales floor.
Also, we had a separate group of electronics people, so that made it easier when I initially worked in there (spent half my time in electronics and half the time out on the floor the electronics dept was in to cover breaks and help answer questions) since I could take all the down time to read the 3x5s and such. Rarely did someone get into electronics (if it wasn't their first week working there) from the floor that didn't already have a lot of time spent in the elec dept.

Another Target Employee here, and an MMB Specialist to boot (which is the person in charge of PC games, they do not fall under Electronics jurisdiction).
Any Target employee worth their weight in Red and Khaki knows that ABSOLUTELY NO Video Games, DVDs, CDs or PC games get Substitutions, PERIOD. It has to do with Copyright policies of various companies and publishers. Mostly along the lines of if a Blizzard game is on sale for the week, it is because there is a deal with them and Target - ergo, you can't put up an EA game on sale in it's place because there was no deal struck. Even though our system technically allows it all to happen anyway.
My guess is probably someone in the price change or research team (they scan the store and zap any outs with their scanners and it will either pull the product or order the product) set that up without knowing what they were doing.
The product should have been rainchecked (unless it was an extra special promotion (i'm not sure what the sale is this week). So, yeah. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.

I think this is right on the money. In both games you deal with the suffering of animals. In CaPPV:HH (the most used acronym in the world btw) you are treating the suffering animals. In WoW you are mercilessly slaughtering tons and tons of innocent creatures.
So somewhat similar.
