The 5,000 Square-Mile Racing Game
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on August 19, 2008
Developer Codemasters is unveiling multi-plat title FUEL at the Leipzig GC. What's FUEL? It's a racing game, so big that it deserves ALL CAPS. It's hailed to have the "largest racing environment to appear in gaming — ever". The game supposedly has a 5,000 square-mile playing area with "no boundaries". Up to 16-players race it out in D.I.Y. cars through places like Nevada's Grand Canyon. The game boasts a full day-and-day cycle and even features a weather system with tornados, thunderstorms, snowstorms and sandstorms. Hope it looks and plays as promising as it sounds.

@SupaPhly: MXM~ maps, while impressive, were roughly 10-15 square miles.
no way they can pull off 5,000 square miles without a fuckton of duplication/mirroring/gradient-cloning. sure, it won't look identical to the patch we drove past 5 minutes ago, but it sure as hell won't look interesting.
FWIW: Citizen Kabuto had functional tornadoes, in 3D, 10 years ago.

Sounds cool. This is the kind of thing I hoped we'd see when I first heard about "next gen" games. I'll be keeping an eye out for this and their F1 game.

This isn't being made by the GRID/DiRT team. Which sucks huge balls. They're working on that new F1 game.
This is being made by Asobo Studios, the makers of "CT: Special Forces" and "Garfield 2."
Great.

It's pretty much a racing version of Far Cry 2.

Whats FUEL? FUEL is a part of Code Masters realization that breaking up the TOCA franchise into highly polished individual franchises therefore guaranteeing racing fans (suckers like me) will fork over another $60 bucks to further round out their next gen TOCA-esk desires.

5000 square miles? If there is enough variation I will definitely check this out, better not be recycling textures though. This is the kind of thing that id Tech 5 would work well with, no inch would be the same.

Sounds like a next-next-next gen version of 1nsane to me.
Which sounds pretty much like the rainbows and the giggling of cherubs.
Great. Now I have a new game I'm most hyped for. Especially if the damage model goes above and beyond DiRT or GRID.

Wow, people're announcing more new IPs at Leipzig this year than at the last two years of E3. E3 must be feeling pretty sulky right about now.

@King of Fun UK: On one hand, I think it's disappointing that team would be taken away from development on what is clearly meant to be a game that goes alongside DiRT and GRID. On the other, this means a very, very good F1 game is on the way. Personally, since free-roaming racing games like Test Drive Unlimited and Burnout Paradise never seem to be quite as fun as they sound on paper, I think I'm more interested in the F1 game anyway.

No boundaries? So the game areas are spheres. Super Racing Galaxy, here we come! I wonder if you can jump between spheres (with or without the help of Lumas)...

Burnout Paradise has something like 30 sq. miles that is really packed with content. FUEL will be compelling if those 5000 sq miles are well-designed, but that will take an insane amount of work. I'm thinking that 4,900 sq miles will not be very interactive.

I'm imagining a game where you can compete, point to point, with specific on-road cars with downforce, low clearance and super high speeds against pure off roaders with low top speeds but the ability to scramble up mountain passes etc. There would obviouly be rally type cars bridging the differences.
If the game is due to be anything like my imaginings then I like the sound of it! As long as it's not all waggle control on the wii :(

@Xenigma:
Yeah, BO:Paradise is alright, it's kind of annoying to lose a long ass race and not being able to restart it. Sure there are other events around, but when you get around the mountain area, there isn't much. I'm waiting for that F1 game myself.

Nevada has a Grand Canyon, too? Fascinating!
The real one in Arizona has been getting slammed with flooding after an earthen dam broke, but everyone got air lifted out with no problems.

Well, 5000 square miles is 70.71x70.71 miles, so that means it would take maybe 25 or 30 minutes to get from one end to the other at top speed, which is pretty sweet.
As for Test Drive Unlimited, wasn't it the entire island of Oahu? That is 596.7 square miles according to wikipedia.
I just want to know if Nevada invaded Arizona or something, because last time I checked the Grand Canyon wasn't in Nevada.

@Larry Horse: Nevada's Grand Canyon isn't quite as grand as the actual Grand Canyon. Your bike only needs a hangglider to jump it as opposed to a rocket engine.

If this can fix the very, very few things that were "wrong" with TD:U, then I can see myself picking this up.
The large area and the DIY intrigues me. Maybe this will have Top-Gear style events where you race a 1993 Dodge Shadow across the Nevada desert against Clarkson, Capt. Slow and company and you've got mini-events throughtout: racing Vegas Stig, etc.

They could have: KILL, DEAD, FIRE, GERM, WARS, SHOT, DIE!, BOOM, BANG etc...
