This Time, Decapitate Zombies With Your Wii-mote
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 2:00 AM on August 22, 2008
Even though graphically Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop for the Wii won't be up to par with it's 2 year old Xbox 360 counterpart, the game will still be a blast. There is something disturbingly satisfying about lopping off a zombies head with a Wii mote. To fuel your thirst, here's some zombie mutilating gameplay from the title.

This looks OK, but compared to the original it's quite sad. I get that they wanted to port the experience over-- but that's the problem. They ported over the trappings of the game-- you're in a mall, there are some zombies, you save some survivors... but they didn't carry over the experience at all. The first game-- scenario aside-- was about trying to survive both the day and night cycles of zombie comedy slash terror, and the bosses punctuating the storyline. Certain things were hallmarks of that experience-- the nowhere-to-hide feeling of a mall FULL of things that want to eat you, the photography minigame element, the ability to use just about anything as a weapon. I'd be fine with a Wii version-- graphical weakness and all-- if they'd just tried to provide you with a Dead Rising feel... by tweaking the gameplay elements to give you the same kind of experience the original aimed for. This, however, seems to be something else entirely. I really don't understand why they're making it-- they should have spent the same money on a completely original Wii game, because this just looks simple and uninspired.

This looks pretty subpar, and Im not sure if its due to the low res of the video, but it kind of reminds me of the graphics in a PS1 (ok, maybe not so much).
They have a LOT of work yet to be done.

I love DR on the 360 but this just feels kinda soul-less and empty. Both in game zombie count and overall feel.
I'm still pissed they are wasting resources on this and not DEAD RISING 2!
For a company that LOVES sequals, it is utterly confusing to me as to why DR2 is only now being discussed.

@PapaBear434: Not only are you complaining a lot, but you also appear (still!) to have failed to understand how the Wii remote sensor works. When aiming the pointer, the accelerometers aren't generally used, or only for corrections or offscreen motion or something. Instead it uses an infra-red camera, which gives very similar results to a lightgun ie it determines an actual direction of pointing relative to the sensor bar, it is not a relative-to-where-you-last-were inaccurate measurement that accelerometers can give.
Unless it's really shockingly accurate, MotionPlus would probably make no difference to games which use the pointer - it's games which don't that would be improved. In fact some of the Wii Sports Resort screens looked kind of like the pointer was being used to calibrate an initial position for MotionPlus, though I'm not certain about it...
In addition I agree that little wobble can happen (even though it's not to do with the accelerometers) but it doesn't really seem to be a big problem for my setup. I think it's probably something to do with a less-than-ideal setup: too far away (or too close?) to the sensor bar, for instance.
Finally, going back to Dead Rising, Wii owners who never played the original (but who play this one, when it comes out) aren't 'missing' a damn thing. Because you know what? If this version wasn't coming out, we'd never play the game at all. And if this version is good and fun, we aren't going to care too much that the original has better graphics or better collision detection or plays a bit differently.
Before this sounds too positive though, I do still doubt they'll improve the zombie count much even though the claim to be aiming for 'a hundred' - although it still looks, you know, okay (they've got ~20 on most of the screens, including further-away ones), it could be better for sure. But as a rule I never believe the 'this is still in development, we are aiming for better' claims; they rarely turn out true... so I suspect 'okay' is where it will end up and we won't have a really massive zombie horde onscreen at once. And even though the controls definitely look like fun, they could still be bodged.

part of the challenge of the first game was trying to navigate survivors through areas full of zombies. if the rescue mechanic is the same in this one, it will be too easy with only 10-20 zombies on screen

Anyone who thinks this will be any good has not played the 360 version, or at least was tripping balls when they did play it. There's not enough zombies. This game won't be challenging, so the novelty of smacking around zombies will wear off quickly. Never mind the GC, this looks like something that would be more fitting of the PS One generation.

Just watched yet another time. This is basically a half-assed Resident Evil 4. They've REALLY got to stop milking that game. It went from being awesome and a blast to play to annoying as hell when it came out for every system and it's gameplay started leaking into every other game on the market.
It was fun once. Twice maybe. But stop fucking releasing the same damn game twenty more times. It's not fun any more.

@TrjnRabbit: TBH I didn't notice them especially, although I wasn't paying that much attention I guess. It looks pretty fun, I'm looking forward to it.
By the way, didn't it have a few 'serious' graphical issues on 360 as well? (Not comparing the quality - just that the 'phoned-in-ness' may have been ported accurately between platforms :)
@original post: I know this is Kotaku so maybe you don't care but... there's an apostrophe in the wrong place. Should be 'its', while 'zombies' should be 'zombie's'. ('it's' is only ever short for 'it is' or 'it has', so if neither of those fit your sentence, don't use an apostrophe.)

I'm a 360 and Wii owner, but what annoys me about this release is that it really should have went to the PS3. Why?
Because I imagine they would have added juicy extras to make it worth if for PS3 owners (al la bioshock) that would have hopefully been dlc for 360 owners. Instead, they wasted God-knows how long on this crap-tastic, dumb-downed version for technically inferior system. I fell bad for PS3 owners as this was a great game, and I also feel bad for us 360 owners because who knows what extras we could have gotten had they put priorities on a PS3 version.

Graphical issues I noticed:
The obvious lack of zombies. Do you really need the shopping cart or umbrella for ten zombies? Just run around them, you pansy.
The heads don't dismember. They just disappear. Granted, it's a big shotgun, but I expect more in this day and age.
One zombie, when hit, flew backwards and clipped through a chair to hit another zombie. Doesn't appear to do a ragdoll motion or anything. Just went right through the blue chair uninterrupted.
Was the clown throwing something that the player was shooting out of the air? Or was he stuck in an animation loop?
Not really a graphical issue, but the fact that the aiming reticule had the typical "Wiimote Wiggle" that has exemplified almost every Wii application I saw while owning one and playing on my sister's. Even sitting motionless on a table, the cursor tends to sit there and do this little wobble, as it's only accelerometers guessing your position in relation to the sensor bar and not a true light gun. I would like to hope MotionPlus could fix this later, but that would require a patch. And seeing how the Wii doesn't have a hard drive, that may be difficult. Just have to deal with it.
Yes, I am complaining a lot. But this is, hands down, my favorite game of this generation. Seeing this version feels like a watered down cash in, and I'd like Wii owners that have never played the original to know what they are missing.

Ok. I liked RE4 for the 'cube. REALLY liked it. Thought it was such an amazing game until RE4 for the Wii came out. And it became better. As a matter of fact, the Wii version is the only reason i don't say i "loved" the GC version.
I kinda liked Dead Rising for the 360. The MAJOR problem was the controls. Putting RE4Wii controls on Dead Rising... well, my interest has been piqued to the Nth degree.

No, no, no. This won't be Dead Rising. Not even close.
It looks like a horrible RE4 clone with the same sound effects and controls, and ruins the story that made the game great. The lack of Kent's story, Jo having tazer hands, shooting Madonna the dog, and having ten zombies on screen at once? Oh, and Adam the clown being on the roof for no reason, killable by a toy sword? The lack of more than two items on-screen that can be used as weapons at any one time?
They've either got to stop trying to make this similar at all, or at least do it justice. Don't half-ass this.
This thing is an abomination to anyone who's played the original. It won't be fun. It'll be a real endurance test for those with common sense.

I still play this game from time to time and no matter how much I play, I can still get freaked out and panic because of the number of zombies. If my car dies in a remote part of the maintenance tunnels and I'm low on health, things get scary. I can't imagine that feeling on the Wii when my health is low and I have to navigate around tens of zombies.

@last_dread: Totally.
This game doesn't seem to be doing the 360 version justice. It should have been a different story. Something that would explain the lack of 100s of zombies. Something that would explain the dozens or so of zombies. Anything. But. This.
The Wii needs to get better games, and this just is not one of those games.
Although, if it is someone getting into zombie games for the first time and not knowing about the 360 version then it's okay. Repetitive sounds aside, this game looks like a Wii game hands down.

This does look like a really cheap port that is sure to dissapoint. I was sorta hoping for a PS2 port since it wouldn't take much, just take out the garbage Wii-motion controls and make it for a real controller, but now I hope they don't. Trapped in a mall with hundreds of zombies is a challenge. Trapped in a mall with 3 zombies is just a minor annoyance.

In addition to the horrible-ness that is the static shadow sprite, if you look closely when the shotgun blasting starts at about 30 seconds in, you can see the shadow sprite is attached to the zombie's ground plane, not the actual floor, so when the zombies get airborne, the shadow jumps up with them. That is fantastic.

Seriously, multi-platform games are usually made with the limitations of the weakest link in mind. That means that any game coming out on all 3 systems will be worse on the 360 and PS3 because of the Wii.

@Caowyth: I think you'll find that's not the case with any game, they mostly just make the 360 and PS3 versions then a shitty downgraded crappy shovelware port for the Wii, which is why it's great the system is getting mostly Exclusive titles, at least the ones that matter, heh, and more and more companies make new games for it instead of ports.
@Mister Adequate: You need your eyes checked, go play Silent Hill on PS1 or something, and see if that ever has the kind of view distance seen in an average Dead Rising shot, or the number of enemies, or the resolution of textures and the overall polycounts... So, yes, your post is really full of hyperbole, even if nostalgia is clouding your vision, I doubt you can go back and enjoy 3D PS1 games visually. Well, maybe Dead or Alive 1 looks smooth still.
What's the point of nit picking everything you see in Dead Rising anyway? Did anyone think it was going to look like on 360? It's a damn port on a vastly different system.
As for using it to bash the Wii overall, maybe try and realise that even though this uses the Resident Evil 4 engine (which makes the port even worse given the little time they have to convert all of the assets), a GAMECUBE engine, Resident Evil 4 itself, still looks far better, and with not many less enemies visible at times, even though they're far more detailed.
Given the above, I do have faith they can add higher zombie counts in the final version, since the current zombies look far less detailed than the Resi 4 enemies, but I guess we'll see. I'm still confident they can make a fun Resi 4 style adventure out of it, it's just too bad they didn't just decide to make a Resi 4 spin off instead of this.
Given the above,

@PapaBear434: "I'd like Wii owners that have never played the original to know what they are missing."
Seen it, played it at a friend's house, didn't grab me. This looks like a much better game and I'm genuinely excited about it.
No, I don't give a shit that the graphics are worse or the zombie physics aren't realistc. I'd hope that most Wii owners feel the same way, or they wouldn't have bought the console in the first place.

man, this has to be the worst game video I ever watched in my life.... the wii version obviously sucks BIG TIME!
and not one anti wii guy or anything, at the beggining of this gen I was hopping for wii and wishing for it to have a blast on good games as happened to ps2(as it was the least powerful one too) but man, wtf is this? I watched the video, tought "this game really sucks, I dont get" then watched the 360 version and saw what made the game interesting... meh, Ive lost all my hopes on wii.

@brenoporra: Lol, not anti Wii ey? Wanting it to be like the PS2 ey? Well, it pretty much is getting there, you do realise the PS1 and 2 had thousands of titles, how many were worthy? 100 at tops? Do the math and you'll find the Wii is getting a similar share of good to bad games, not to mention it's now getting mostly exclusives, even more than the 360 or PS3. You condemn it because of the bad games? The whole industry is MADE OF SHOVELWARE so wake up rather than condemn just the Wii over it. We get systems for their good games, not the amount of bad we can simply ignore. Also, if this is the worst game or video you've seen, I guess you're really not much into gaming after all, casual :)

I hope this is a very, very beta version of the game, because it frankly looks sloppy. The (lack of) physics, the icky explosion effects, and clunky looking controls make me think this needs to be improved before it's released. I never played the original Dead Rising, but I'll play this game if it's any good.

@KristenBal: What he said at least applies to some degree to PC versions of games being developed at the same time as the console ones. Oblivion and BioShock would have been a whole hell of a lot better if they had been PC only.

It was mostly developer mentality and interface and audience differences that accounted for Oblivion's shortcomings as a PC RPG. Not the difference in power specifications. After all, most great PC RPGs run on much lower specifications.

Screenshot of the Wii version from CVG:
[medialib.computerandvideogames.com]
Yes, it looks dodgy, but CVG screenshots are almost always shitty quality. Still, we can see at least 30 zombies there so that's a good sign... They've already doubled it since the screenshots that only showed a dozen or so at once :)

I was planning on picking this Wii version up, but I ended up going back to the 360 version and playing through it further.
I think the Wiimote controls will be fun tho!
