Trashing Trailers
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 4:30 AM on August 19, 2008
Once upon a time when I was still an intern, Crecente and I had a lunch.
We sat down with two greasy hamburgers and came up with an interesting idea. Actually, we thought of it to be more of an experiment. The result was Trailer Trash, another take on the game industry's worst trailers. Today you get to see our first attempt at filtering that into reality.
Video after the jump!

Before the video started I guessed the discussion would have to be conducted MST-style. I'm not sure if that is an homage or reckless imitation. One thing though: For all its "millions" of dollars in special effects, the intro is too long. It's Mystery Science Theater. We get it. But if you're planning on making these for the long term, I suggest copying the intro styles of Zero Punc., or Video Game Vault so viewers won't have to shuffle through the same intro time after time (It's a full minute in before any real footage starts). Finally, don't let the MST concept hold you back. At 1:25, for example, something else in the studio could have caught fire. Just IMO.

MST3K is awesome. Nerds who think they're really funny and try to pull of MST3K-style thinks are extremely unfunny, and annoying.
Unfortunately, this thing falls FAR into the latter camp. I mean not only is the concept extremely unoriginal, the execution is far too weak to redeem it at all.
It feels like a really failed experiment. Maybe you could execute a similar concept in a less transparently ripped-off way, one that makes better use of your comedic and writing strengths, and is more uniquely Kotaku?
Judging from the other comments, I guess it's been pretty popular, but this is seriously the lamest thing I've seen here, and I'm really not looking forward to more of these. This is sub 'Angry Video Game Nerd' territory...

I approve. This is sublime.
Sometimes I question the existence of video game trailers in the first place. You need to be able to play something in order to form an impression of how good it can be. However, I suppose demos are too personal and intimate to function as hype-building set pieces.

Great concept, I liked the MST send up, but the script just wasn't there. Nothing was said other than obvious observations that anyone watching the original trailer could have thought of. Still, I look forward to seeing more, and I expect the overall quality will increase over time.
Personally, I think that this would work better with shorter trailers, but that's not a major complaint by any stretch.

Man, every time I hear Crecente's voice, I'm shocked. Pretty much every online idol I've had sounds awful in real life. Their voices are usually pathetic. But no, not Crecente. He has to go out and have a REAL voice, that real humans have.
As for the trailer review, the jokes were funny, but the timing(or tone, not sure which) were off. I mean, I laughed, but if the commentary had flowed a little more naturally into it, I would have been rolling on the floor.

It was all pretty great (I especially enjoyed the entrance graphics) but I think Fahey and Crecente need to watch some more MST3k to analyze what it is that makes that show so funny. Timing and held-back laughter. The script itself is pretty good but the execution was lacking. I give it a 7/10. Definite potential!

@Placentasaurus: Well there's some good news then, Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy et al are doing the Film Crew
[en.wikipedia.org]
& Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu et al are doing Cinematic Titanic
[en.wikipedia.org]
Both are pretty much the same thing as MST3K with just a slightly different conceit behind them.
They're only releasing them on dvd.
I've only seen one cinematic titanic release (the oozing skull) and it was alright, and a couple of the Film Crew ones have been pretty good, esp. the dvd 'extras'
Anyway, Trailer Trash is a decent idea, but would be better if they didn't try so hard to ape the style of MST3K and just rolled with their own humor a bit more.

amazing production work Adam. Above all else, Amazing.
Eh, a few chuckles, but nothing lawl yet. Could hardly hear robot Fahey. But the concept works and can only get better.
Next time, get a REAL trailer, something with some substance not WoW meets Oblivion on a Asian MMO none of us will ever play.
Something that has that 'giant enemy crab' we can all grin at. Take some shots at other games ":Guy turns into kitty: Check out the new lvl 90 cat form guys".
Add some geeky jokes (little things, like the Kotaku pointing fish and the Tower were actually some of the best parts

It's not all there just yet. Entertaining to some degree but I have a feeling that trailers might not be the best material for spoofing. There's little room to create an ongoing repertoire of characters to make fun of, and with some of the worst trailers being woefully generic, you'll probably end up resorting to some of the more unfortunately generic jokes.
The production is good, and Fahey with Crecente have pretty good voice work here. But I just think that working with uninspired material will result in unfortunately uninspired mockery. Or maybe I'm just too critical. Anycase, you might do well to at least use a longer video. Perhaps some gameplay footage, playing through a particularly buggy or insipid level of some game we've actually heard of seems more engaging to me.
When it comes to MST3K, a lot of the experience was that it felt like hanging around with your friends making fun of a bad movie. I can't recall EVER having hung around with my friends to make fun of a trailer. I CAN however remember countless nights making fun of games we were playing. And that's nostalgia I can get behind.

@Psudonym: This.
Absolutely nailed it. Another suggestion may be to do more than one trailer and then link jokes throughout. At least some way to set things up and not be rushed into making a lot of jokes in a short amount of time, leaving some pacing for nailing the best ones and staying silent in the inbetween.

@theenglishman: Actually, if you're looking for a better MST3k revival, check out RiffTrax (www.rifftrax.com) - it's Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Jim Mallon riffing movies. It's not entirely as funny as the whole crew of writers they used to have on the show, but it's pretty damn close.

Unless your name is Joel Hodgson, Mike Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, etc... you should never, ever try to make a funny MST3k type thing. They had a mad talent for riffing and things like this just end up coming off like the cheap (and short lived) MST3k ripoff "Attack of the Killer B-Movies". Which is to say, godawful.

I fully support this to continue since it has some potential. Just need to find your groove I think. The comedy wasn't quite hitting for me (with a few exceptions). As for it being more talky and less jokey, just be careful walking that line. I'd like to see more, just needs a lot of polish. I think the biggest challenge is that you don't have a lot of time to make an impact so there needs quite a few zingers in order for it to be memorable. Whereas MST3K had an entire movies length of time that made it possible for stale jokes to be covered up over time. Not horrible for a first comedy outing, though - it really could have been A LOT worse.
