U.S. Celebrates Independence With $US 1.9 Billion Game Shopping Spree
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on August 15, 2008
According to NPD figures, the video game industry racked up $US 1.19 billion in hardware, software and accessory sales in July. You could do worse, I suppose. Last year's take from the same month failed to crack the billion mark, but $US 446.9 million worth of hardware purchased by U.S. consumers and $US 591.1 in software, you make it close to a billion pretty easily. That $US 149.1 million in accessories just pushes you right over the edge.
The overall take for the month was up 28% for you percentage fetishists, making the year to date take $US 9.47 billion. Expect another record breaking year for the industry.

HOLY SHIT! $446.9 million worth of hardware but only $591.1 in software? Man, that is some lousy showing for software, people!
Unless you're saying $591.1 million, in which case, you don't need to account for the accessories $149.1 million to push it into the billions, because 446.9 + 591.1 = 1038 and that means 1.038 billion.
What is going on here, McWhertor?

Actually, $446.9 million + $591.1 million is already over a billion. Not close to.
Sorry, I'm a teacher and I enjoy making people feel small...

So which is it, $1.9 billion or $1.19 billion? Big difference there.

I suppose if Will Smith wants to really win back Big Willy Weekend, he'll need to put himself in a videogame.

The industry has the stimulus checks to thank!

On second thought, 1.038 billion IS close to a billion... just on the other side. But then the accessory sales don't push it over the edge.

Arithmetically challenged people FTL. Unless the "close to a billion" was sarcastic.

Looks like all those extra sales year to year are the new mom and pop consumer that Wii and DS are bringing in to expand the market. Too bad none of them will buy anything other than Wii Play and Brain Age.
