Warhammer Online Launch Dated
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on August 6, 2008

Three years in development later, and EA has finally announced that Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will launch worldwide on September 18th. Says Mythic Entertainment founder Mark Jackobs:
The countdown has officially begun. Mark your calendars! September 18th is the Day of Reckoning. For the last three years, the entire team at Mythic has poured their hearts into making Warhammer Online the next great MMORPG. We are so excited to open up this world and share it with the fans that will live in it, quest in it, go to war in it and make it come alive.
The game will launch its North American, European and Oceanic servers simultaneously, a MMORPG first. Subscription options include: US$US 14.99 for a month subscription, $US 41.97 for a three-month subscription and $US 77.94 for a six-month subscription.
FAIRFAX, Va.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Hot on the heels of spectacular showings at E3 and Comic-Con, Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) studio, today announced that fans will be able to enter the gritty fantasy world of Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR) on September 18th, 2008 when the highly-anticipated MMORPG goes live. After three years in development by Virginia-based Mythic Entertainment, WAR will open its North American, European and Oceanic servers and offer players a variety of flexible subscription options. Gamers who pre-order WAR in North American will enjoy special benefits including open beta admission, a live game head start, and bonus in-game items.

Consumer demand for WAR is mounting with all units of the game's Collector's Edition having been pre-sold in North America. In addition, the title is receiving significant media attention, picking up numerous critic awards at this year's E3, including "Best PC Game" from G4's XPlay, "Best MMO" from IGN and Voodoo Extreme, and "Top 10 PC Game" from Gamespy, as well as being nominated for the prestigious Game Critic's Awards "Best PC Game".
"The countdown has officially begun. Mark your calendars! September 18th is the Day of Reckoning," said Mark Jacobs, founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. "For the last three years, the entire team at Mythic has poured their hearts into making Warhammer Online the next great MMORPG. We are so excited to open up this world and share it with the fans that will live in it, quest in it, go to war in it and make it come alive."
Fans looking forward to laying siege to their enemy's capital city will have several pricing options available, beginning with a $14.99 monthly subscription. Additionally, collectible 30- and 60-day prepaid Game Time™ Cards will be available at many game retailers. WAR subscription options include:

* 3-Month Subscription: $41.97 ($13.99 per month)
* 6-Month Subscription: $77.94 ($12.99 per month)

I think this game looks pretty promising, and I really hope it somehow does well enough to compete with WoW, but I also hope that they put the cities back in soon after launch, or it could get a little crowded and boring.

Aw man, that's even better than the Sept 23rd date you guys found earlier.
Sept 18th can't come soon enough! I'm picking it up day one.
The way I see it, since I was there for the AoC launch, I can handle another bad launch.
Except that with Mythic, they 1) seem to know what they are doing, 2) actually care about their game.
AoC is a fun game, but it's headed to the grave because FunCom niether knows what they are doing, nor care about their game. It's a tragedy, really. AoC had such tremendous potential.
But I digress. I'm ready for WAR!

I really really want to play this game, but I've learned my lesson well from Vanguard and Age of Conan (thank god I didn't buy Vanguard). But I wasted $50 on AoC, I am not about to do the same. I really wish MMO's would launch with a trial or some sort.

Also, considering DAoC, I have full faith that Mythic can bring a quality MMO to the table. While I never played DAoC I had friends that did, and they had nothing but positive things to say about its PvP/RvR. I'm beside myself in anticipation!

@Rubezh: The content cut probably isn't going to be as huge of a deal as some people have been led to believe. And it's not so much of an outright cut as a "we're going to wait on this and release it later, when it's good enough, but the rest of the game is good to go".
It's not like AoC, where GOBS of content was left out, classes weren't bothered to be balanced or de-bugged, and PvP was mindless ganking. FunCom pretty much shoved AoC out the door, and Mythic has been taking the exact opposite approach.
The similarities between the two are really only that "there is some content missing at launch" - but that seems to be an increasingly difficult problem for developers. At least they were honest about it.

WAR sounds a lot different, theres a highly experienced team behind it, should be ok when it comes out, i hope, at least more of a finished product then AoC still is.

It continues to surprise me how many people have sworn off this game since the news came that they'd cut content. It's like people don't think that every single game gets stuff cut before release - the only different is that we knew about it before it was cut. I guess if one of the careers they cut was the only one you'd planned to play I could understand it, but from what I've heard from beta players the game is all the better for it (just their opinion, of course).
Anyway, the game might be shit but think people are being a bit hasty writing it off based on some stuff getting cut.
Having said all that, I REALLY want to use my beta key that I got from pre-ordering the CE. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to have the free time for an epic MMO (job hunting just now), so really want to try the beta before I spend £50 on a game I might end up hardly playing!

@Gileadxv: Getting ready to destroy the world of warcraft for taking their world and art style? Warhammer came first, and both Warcraft and Starcraft are heavily based on it.
Anyway, like others have said, Mythic seems to know what its doing. Even if they did remove lots of stuff, they felt that it would help them achieve their goal of making it as polished as possible at launch.

@Ken: Which games, exactly? Most games with online components run where one of the player either hosts the server or has a dedicated server running on another machine. MMOGs on the other hand run on servers owned by the developer or publisher, and the monthly fee pays for their running and upkeep. And, yes, some of it is profit. If it wasn't profit they'd have no reason to keep the servers up or make new content.

Im really tempted with this one..I never played the table top but i would pluck down cash at the local comic shop so i could paint the little figures.. the character designs are amazing.. Right now, I'm playing AoC, and i'm still enjoying it.. the kicker for me is that it feels really fresh and exciting with high production values up until about level 20, then they literally cut production values in half, with no further voice acting, facial animations, or cut scenes.. I agree with those who have said before, it has potential.. and i'll keep playing it, but if Warhammer comes out and turns out to be the second coming.. it'll be too late for AoC to prove itself and it'll lose itself yet another subscriber.

There are enough differences from WoW that I'm excited to see the game in action. Public quests sound awesome, and the ability to literally loot, pillage, and burn to the ground your enemy's capital city is a BIG draw. To be fair Warcraft and Warhammer are stupidly similar (as are Starcraft and 40k), it's primarily Games Workshops fault though for pulling out on Warcraft (which was going to be a Warhammer game). Blizzard just modified what they had already and pushed it out the door. Still Warcraft has become largely established and now stands on its own two feet as a seperate entity from warhammer. That doesn't mean they still don't borrow a few things *coughpaladintier2cough*.

I've been in the the various warhammer online beta phases for about nine months now.
It's not a bad game... In depth game play, yet very very casual friendly. As far as I've progressed (which isn't to endgame) it doesn't seem that there is any need for hardcore-play 20 hours a day-elitest players, except maybe for those who practice for play in the PvP matches.
The graphics are just about on par with WoW.
My biggest complain is that it is very slow paced, in both PvE and PvP.
If WoW was an action FPS, than this game is closer to a turn-based game =/

I have been in the WoW, VG:SoH, AoC(lawl), and now the WAR beta. Out of all these games... Warhammer is the most polished beta I have yet to see. It still has some geometry issues (stuck in world and falling through it) but other than that... the gameplay is balanced between the races, the controls are solid, and the world just looks good.
As far as ganking goes... they have a great mechanism (which I have been a victim of) in place to prevent it... lol...
People who say its not "fun" or "rewarding" either haven't played it or have some odd expectations of how a game should be "fun" and/or "rewarding".
They didn't "randomly sack" classes/content either. Anyone who actually read the press release would know that they got rid of those classes based on Beta feedback. It is not like WoW... in which they have a class that's broken to this day... Hunters...
On a side note before anyone says I'm a WoW hat0r or whatever. I played WoW for 3 years. It is a solid game. Arguably better than WAR in a lot of ways. However I started playing WoW for PvP... and they have subsequently broken PvP more and more with every patch. After they ruined the Arena with Sham/War combos; I decided the game was done.

Also a current beta member here. I honestly had no interest for this game prior to my friend introducing me to it. I still actively play FFXI, never got into WoW (neon colours suck), so WAR is a real nice change of pace for me (a nice mix of instant and a bit of long term gratification).
However, it still hasn't persuaded me to preorder the actual game though...

@Sushmonster: I think it isn't so much people complaining Blizzard ripped off Warhammer, but an annoyed response to people claiming Warhammer Online ripped off Warcraft.

Hopefully they have a trial version. I was really excited about this and AOC. But after seeing how AOC turned out I'm going to wait this one out. Worse case scenario I can just wait for 40K which will be a more badass enviroment and setting

@HeyApples: "Let's just randomly sack entirely classes and hope they don't notice!"
To bad they did the complete opposite and announced that the classes weren't up to shape rather than releasing 4 broken classes like most games would of done. They weren't trying to sneak the cut around the customers, they had the balls to flat out tell us that it wouldn't get into the game and its for the better because they were broken. They, unlike Failcom believe in talking with the community about what they couldn't do for the game rather than having all of us buy AoC thinking that everything on the box is ingame.

@waza:
Get you facts straight man. Mythic and Gamesworkshop have been making this game long before WoW was even in development. Everything you see in the Warcraft series is due to Warhammer tabletop. Warcraft straight up stole features and gameplay aspects from Warhammer. As regards to these "cool" features you talk about, I'm pretty sure that Realm vs. Realm, public quests, guild towns, armor dying, Town Seiges, PvP leveling, and Tome of Knowledge are amazing game innovations. You will not find any of these "cool" features in WoW because WoW is a piece of crap and Mythic actually care about their game.

I was also closely watching the progress of this title for some time, but with the Wrath of the Lich King release landing not long after, I may have to pass. The vision and dedication to the game from the people at Mythic drew me in, but I'd prefer playing with my wife and friends in WoW than solo in WAR.

I, for one, am excited to see an MMO with a real focus towards the players. I actually feel that cutting the content was the best choice, since an unpolished few classes and cities would most likely end up in nerfing and all sorts of nasty updates. There is nothing worse in an mmo than having your favourite class nerfed down to the point where you can hardly recognize it anymore.
