Weekend Timewaster: FkConflict
Posted by Maggie Greene at 8:30 AM on August 25, 2008
A simple and scaled-down strategy game (it was an entrant in the 'Java4K competition,' where entries could not exceed 4096 bytes), FkConflict is still a lot of fun and good to while away a chunk of time that you probably should be doing something else with. The mechanics are pretty simple: pick your territories; territories get turns each round in random order; first player to get all territories on the board wins.

This is basicly a game of chance, you can push around the other colors, but winning means you got lucky.

@Hdfisise: you have to roll your dice harder. really roll'em. hard.

It's a more boring version of Risk. Which is already painfully boring. I invoke the right of veto.

@Thrash16: I attacked one with like 2 with 5 and I lost 3 and the other territory lost none. I'm so confused.

at the risk of sounding stupid, i don't really get it. I attack a territory with the power of 2 with one with the power of 4 armies and it doesnt kill it? any one care to explain?

Yes, Risk without reinforcements or fortification. There is only so much you can do making a strategy game under 4096 bytes.

Wow this game is really boring. I know there is a size limit of 4096 bytes. But just because you can fit an amazingly boring strategy game into 4096 bytes doesn't mean you should. :(

@DevCo: You are a total idiot, try it twice next time when you know what you're doing and it's a bit easier to win when you want.

Yeah that's why I never liked Risk. It's based on probability and luck. It doesn't matter how clever you really are, if you're not getting the right dice rolls... you're simply not. Took me about 25 Rounds to win :/

I hate Risk. Rolling the dice is just too much luck for me. Not enough strategy. It really pisses me off when I have like 9 men attack one guy and the one guy wins because my luck sucks. That's just BS.
I'm with you Chupakun.

@Chupakun:
Risk still has way more strategy than this. With Risk you can counter bad luck with sound strategy and win, but with this you're force-fed control of places that may or may not be relevant to any strategy.

It's a bit frustrating when you have a massive advantage in one area, but it means absolutely nothing because you keep getting control of useless territories.

do you like any board games almost any board game has to do with probability monopoly, candyland, and pretty much any other involving rolling dice are based on chance.

Funniest thing I heard all week.
"You can counter bad luck with strategy in Risk".
Hehe. So dumb, so naive.

There's strategy in games like Risk. It's all about setting up choke points and slowly expanding from there.

I know there's a size limit for the game, and while I did like it, I might have played past two games if they did a few minor things different. Let us pause the game and zoom out, see statistics like how many armies you have compared to how many armies the other two have, maybe set up an auto route feature so that all reinforcements in a territory will always move along a path that you select.

The odds of me winning this one important skirmish that is. The others were also hit and miss which didn't help. Risk is an addicting strategy game hampered by chance.

@gabelogan: I do as a matter of fact. Perhaps, it's to do with the fact that my "luck" with dice rolls is poor in Risk. I quite enjoy Monopoly and others. Although my favourite board game is probably Settlers of Catan.
@Blah8: I know. The positioning, borders and troop movement are definitely part of the bigger picture. But I've been in the situation that Eltigro has in a real game of Risk and it didn't please me. The odds of me winning were 7-to-2. I still lost.

Not a bad time waster. I have respect for the Java4K competition given the language and the self-imposed constraints they are working with. I thought Risk when I started playing it, but I didn't expect Risk.
My only complaint with this game is the lack of knowledge about where the choke points are. While I did beat it in eight rounds, it would have been nice to know where my impregnable spots were.

Maybe it takes someone who's never played Risk, to find this to be the most entertaining 4kb of data, I've ever played.

I enjoyed it. It is simple though; I didn't really know what I was doing until mid way through and even then I kinda half-assed it the rest of the way. Anyway, really well done and with a few changes it could easily be on Live.

i played and won twice.
the only problem is when you only have one or two territories to kill and it randomly jumps all over the map to other countries like it normally does.
it may take a whole round just to get an attack or two into austrailia

I know it's only 4096 bytes, but why isn't there online multiplayer, or 3d models of armies and vehicles, or sound effects, or pre-rendered video?
OMG the suxxors.
Anyhow, conquered the world in 3 minutes. It was a bloodbath!

@DevCo: No, just know how to play. Cap outside and not too spread out parts of asia, europe, and africa, then work your way capping all of the countries in those continents, and then surrounds americas by filling up your armies in locations that can strategically attack the americas. Once ya know what to do, it's really easy and fun.
