Will There Be Dead Rising PS3?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on August 11, 2008
Here's the way Capcom works: multi-platform. The company really doesn't seem to play favourites, and it tries to get its games everywhere it can. So, exclusive titles like Xbox 360 only zombie title Dead Rising seem somewhat out of place in the corporate M.O. In a Bionic Commando: Rearmed thread on the official PlayStation.Blog, Capcom's John Diamonon writes this in response to a post about a PS3 being "REALLY happy with Capcom" even though Dead Rising is still Xbox 360 only:
You haven't seen the last of Dead Rising.
When asked if this was confirmation of PS3 Dead Rising, Diamonon replied: "Not confirming anything, just hoping. :)" It's already coming to the Wii, so make of this what you will.

I'd have much rather had this than Lost Planet, but it's not a game where there's a deep compelling narrative you've missed by not playing the first, so just make DR2 multi-platform and everyone should be happy.

@excel_excel: Why split the code base? The DR engine is hopelessly average compared to the RE5 graphic engine, let alone multiplatform-optimised.
Porting DR to PS3 would be as useless as porting Saints Row to PS3 -- and DR is even older. Not to say either are bad games. It's just Capcom won't bother, they'll just work on DR2 for both systems.
RE5 engine is multiplatform.
Before you say a Wii port validates a PS3 port, the Wii port runs on a beefed-up RE4 engine. Capcom wouldn't bother releasing a sub-par/average looking PS3 game, but they will release a great looking Wii game.

I'm all in favour of multi-plat. It gives everyone a chance to try out some great games. Personally, I was never that interested in Dead Rising, so I won't be picking this up. Code-y's Overlord was a welcome port though, as is Bioshock, it's a trend I'd like to see more of.

OH THANK YOU! PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE! CAPSLOCK!
Seriously. This game is responsible for three of the five of my dead 360's. Ironically, they did NOT come back in a semi-working zombie form. But even still, this game is by far my favorite of this entire generation, but I am nervous to play it anymore due to the fizzle-factor I've had with the 360.
Plus, you KNOW it would have some sort of "exclusive" content. Yeah, it might just be an extra store somewhere in the mall, or something small and possibly lame like that, but it's still something. Right?

They should rather make Dead Rising 2 for 360 & PS3 simultaneously. This is like the Lost Planet thing. Really, nobody cares too much. Most of these "series" of games weren't/aren't on PS3 because it wasn't out at the time. So why beat a dead horse.
Oh right, to make more money. Nevermind all of that what I said.

If they port it, then maybe then can hire someone to figure out a control scheme that actually works. It must have the absolute worst control scheme I have ever encountered. Two different styles for aiming? And one based on the LEFT stick? It's like they've never seen a modern controller before.
They must have had a right old chuckle, making it both impossible to aim firearms, then filling the game with bosses that require precision aiming with firearms to defeat.

I hope they scrap that rubbish "set it in Vegas" idea. It was stupid in the latest Resident Evil movie, it'll be stupid in Dead Rising. I'd much rather prefer Frank getting to play around in the city the mall was in...the one you fly over in the chopper at the start of the 1st game. A similar small town, maybe even like the one in 30 Days of Night (but just less snowy) would be great too.
Oh and please, for the love of cheeses and every vein in my head I'd like to avoid popping, don't include nuisance characters like chatty-sally, Otis or timed-missions where I have to pull up a giant wrist watch + giant arm every five seconds or escort missions where I have to herd cats in a bag down escalators and across convict-infested parks. This is mostly a given. Either they release Dead Rising 2 for both consoles or they re-release the first one the PS3 first.
Hey maybe they're planning on releasing DR1 and 2 on the PS3 at the same time!
Come to think of it, wouldn't it be awesome if Capcom included The Night of the Living Dead movie in the Blu-Ray disc with this game (or DR2). Or maybe even a bundled movie wouldn't be bad either. Doesn't have to be Romero's classic. It can be 28 days/weeks later, etc.
Capcom likes money. This game has nor reason not to appear on the PS3.

It was explained once by one of Capcom's engineers that DR runs on an older version of the MT Framework engine. Basically before they made a PS3 version, and that's why LP was ported instead.
In other words, porting it would require more effort/money than it's worth.

@Barts: Personally I think it's worth owning all 3 current-gen consoles if you have the money. All of them have some real gems, and they aren't going to get in a big fistfight under the TV just because they come from different companies.
I still tend to get my multi-plat titles on the 360, but since I have a much bigger friends list on that platform it's more because of the social aspect as opposed to a "superior" platform.

It better be a sequel, even if it was the only game that I unlocked all the achievements, if it gets ported, it's 2 years old. I had a lot of fun playing that game, mindless slaying of zombies is always fun.
If they added another playable character to play like they did in Lost Planet, heck, I'll probably buy it. I put more time on that game alone, than all my other 360 games combined.

Obligatory: The PS3 has covered wars, you know.
(Cue cutscene of Solid Snake & Frank)
Seriously, though, everyone has their favorite consoles here and there; I, for one, have viewed with distaste many of Sony's console design decisions since the original Playstation. HOWEVER, I dislike console exclusivity for the sake of exclusivity. If you can give me a good, solid technical reason why a game can only exist on one console vs. another, that's the way life goes. Otherwise, exclusivity simply hurts my fellow gaming brothers and sisters who cannot or just will not have every single console littering their entertainment center.
For this reason, I hope that this means Dead Rising will be arriving for the PS3 (or, barring that, DR2 for all the consoles). And while we're at it, who is responsible for making sure RezHD shows up on PSN? Has it? If not, why not? Everyone should play it. While we're at it, port it to WiiWare as well! Get the pitchforks!

God. They should have done that in the first place.
If they had, by now we would have had an in-house sequel, since it would have actually SOLD in Japan and Capcom, therefore, would have considered it a success instead of a 'Western market game.'
Seems like a decision slow to the punch. BUT. A PS3 Dead Rising late to the game is better than no PS3 Dead Rising.
I really want Capcom to focus more attention on this as a franchise... hopefully this is what they are coming around to. Still trembling in fear at the thought of a shit American developed sequel.

I don't think PS3 owners would fork out full price for this game given the age of it and the amount of complaints from 360 users about the retarded save game system (and I am one of those users).
Looking back I would say it wasn't worth spending the full amount on this game and I am sure most PS3 users would feel the same.
I am sure Dead Rising 2 will end up on both the 360 and PS3 (and all household appliances).....

verrrrrrry interesting... this was one of those neat games that i liked- but didn't quite like enough to want to pay full price for it. if they fixed a lot of the minor flaws with the original experience and lowered the price- and of course this is assuming they managed a "quality" port (i.e. NOT Lost Planet PS3 edition)- then i could see this doing REALLY well on PS3.
of course i think it's just as likely (if not more so) that they are just working on a multiplatform sequel that will completely outdo the original and will simultaneously release on all platforms.
i guess they could port the first one, though- seeing as how capcom ported RE4 to Wii over 2 years after the original release. in any case- it looks like some (eventual) good news for us PS3 fans.

Dead Rising was a great game... graphically and mechanically it had a high degree of polish, and it was the first 'next gen' title of the 360/PS3 era that really hooked me.
Which is not to say it was perfect, it was not. Otis, the black janitorial analog of Ocarina of Time's Navi, was a particular problem. Certain controls could have been made better, inventory management in particular. But the core gameplay was solid, and fun as all hell.
If they ported this game to the PS3, I'd snap it up. I'm LESS excited about the Wii version, but I may end up getting it anyway, based on the 'free targeting' screenshots I've seen. RE4 on the Wii was fun, after all.
But mostly I am beside myself with anticipation for the sequel. Please, Capcom, I need to fulfill my dual driving urges... my need for violence, and my need for STUFF!
It is my fond hope that even if the sequel takes us beyond the mall, that it at least has a mall IN IT. Perhaps the world's BIGGEST mall.... which becomes the last enclave of humanity? Hm?

@NateN: You see, money problems aside (it does cost a bunch to own them all with original games here in Poland - salaries are lower and prices higher), I just don't have as much time for gaming as I used to and for the most part my PC + PSP combo works just fine.
PC for that home gaming, PSP for travels.
Other than that, I just didn't see that many games on either platform to encourage me to take a jump. Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Geometry Wars, Heavenly Sword, Everyday Shooter, PixelJunk Eden, Braid, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Orange Box and that's pretty much it.
Now, most of those are available for PC, so for the time being I m not really too tempted to make a jump. Still, PS3 is slowly beginning to unwind, and while I actually always thought it's X360 that is going to win, MS's habit of porting everything to Windows combined with RRODs has left me thinking more and more about actually buying Sony behemoth.

Oh, I really hope so! I really want Dead Rising for the PS3.
