Don't like WoW? Not up to date on the latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King? Doesn't really matter. Blizzard's cinematic sequences are normally great viewing whether you like the game or not, and this, their latest, is no different. It's really great.
I'm a bit confused about the trailer. It's neat, has a meaning especially if you've played WC3 and WC3TFT but atleast I thought that he summoned Sapphiron from under the ice. But then again, I dunno.

@taftsearlobe33: I can't personally think any game company that is able to compete even near Blizzard or Square-Enix. Dedicated animation houses are certainly in same league, like Blur Studio (author of recent Warhammer and Hellgate: London cinematics for example), but no other game studios.
In all honesty i didnt expect this trailer to have loads of action and whatnot, it fits the theme. I think Burning Crusade introduced a hell of alot more things that they could show in the trailer than Lich King does, not to say that they couldn't have shown other stuff. I just think done enough...its all about the king.
But still, MMO wise i think Guild Wars Factions has the best CG opening i've ever seen.
ONe thing though... poor gnomes, not int he first trailer not in the second and still no Gnomes... To bad I don't like Gnomes otherwise I would cry with em :D.

@Cats: Arthas himself is semi gone, This is the Lich King, an old and tortured soul of an Orc. Who is so frightened by the Legion (and for good reasons) that he pretty much took over Arthas's body and sealed himself off at any cost.
But granted Blizzard is a bit unclear about this whole thing, keeping the two confused and using them both through onother. Ner'zhul (Lich King) basically is scared beyond reason for the Burning Legion, and if you know what they did to him. You begin to understand the Orc a bit.

I don't know why everyone wants the trailer to be all pew pew. We've got Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 trailers to look forward to for awesomeness. This is a perfect intro to Arthas for the large portion of WoW players who have no idea who he is.
@ara: other companies have caught up with Blizz quality of renders now. there is no longer a huge gap between blizzards cinemas and others. Don't get me wrong they are still good but they are not so far ahead of everyone else, everyone else is on par with Blizz.
Now the only thing that separates Blizz cinematics from others is the cinematography.

The cinematic was thematic but it does feel more like a trailer than an opening cinematic. It lacks some sense of conflict. The original cinematic had the various races and classes fighting, while the cinematic for the Burning Crusade had Illidan directly challenging the players and featured the Dranei and Blood Elves in conflict as well.
It's a nice movie and considering most players will only see it once or twice it's a little irrelevant whether it feels like a trailer or not.
One last thought I had was the outcropping of ice in the giant chasm, why is there always an outcropping of some kind for people to conveniently stand on above a hoard of soldiers or monsters? They sure must be prime real-estate...

@kadaj_sama: They *are* making a movie, together with Legendary Pictures (300, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight). It will feature live action actors, and will be set about a year before WoW, telling a primarily Alliance PoV story.
One teaser image has been released, a concept illustration of Teldrassil, home of the night elves:
Very good cenematic but I thought we were going to see some "action" like the other trailers. The narration for this one was the best. The other two left much more excitement though after the action.

What an amazing cinematic, visually. The little things always stun me the most, like when he wipes the snow away with his hand. That kind of stuff always looks slightly clumsy to me, but in this it was perfect. Blizzard has perfected the life-like human motion in cinematics, I think.
I totally disagree. This cinematic seemed bland. Go back and look at the Burning Crusade cinematic - it was urgent, pompous, exciting, lots of cuts, swelling music, and, again, a sense of urgency.
Arthas takes an hour and a half to summon a frost wyrm and we see the Scourge. We've seen all this before.
Pretty fucking badass. It's a shame I don't play WoW. Maybe I should start. No! No! I won't, need to have ... life. But did you see that dragon?!? FUCKING EPIC!
@tylerstyle: Graphics are overrated. I notice that a lot of the newer MMORPGs have fairly high-end graphics, but all have really generic-looking environments and characters without any real personality. Blizzard takes what they have and really puts it to good use designing unique environments and characters. Howling Fjord, for example, blows just about all other MMORPG environments I've seen away.
@Dehnus: According to Metzen, they are perfectly merged into one single being, neither Ner'zhul or Arthas any longer, but rather, the Lich King.
He is also, interestingly, basically a perfect hybrid of the old Horde death knights (orc souls transplanted into human bodies) and the Scourge death knights (fallen paladins allied to the Scourge).

I'm totally over WoW but I still love seeing the cinematics and new insights to the lore they produce now and then. The lore is really one of the best things about it.
isn't that dragon supposed to be the undead resurection of the dragon from before burning crusade wow end-game. Nefarian from blackwing lair I believe.
They are one and the same. They were from the moment he put on the helmet. They wouldn't have put in the whole king talking thing if he wasn't still Arthas in some major form. The Lich King can't survive without Arthas, and Arthas doesn't want to abandon the power he has found.
If you recall, the Lich King was going to "die" due to a crack in his little glacier in the end of TFT, and this directly affected Arthas and his abilities.
Impressive as always; because Blizzard are so good at doing cinematics I recall all my friends feeling cheated at the end of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne with the Illidan and Arthas fight. This ranks up there with the Hellscream vs Mannoroth job they pulled in Reign of Chaos in terms of ability to impress.

Actually no they have not, Metzen himself said the two merged and no longer are considered individuals as they were, but that Arthas is the dominate personality, thus the creature still goes by the name, Arthas.
It is why Blizzard calls him The Lich King, Arthas.
As for the cinematic, I love it. Yes it didn't have rapid action, and I agree the ending could have had more of a climax then it did, but I don't care, it looks amazing and sent chills down my spine, seeing Arthas again being the badass he is.
BTW, the trailer was epic. Blizzard's cutscenes are always phenomenal. Great visuals, script, and music. The trailer doesn't make me feel like playing WoW, though. Nothing can. Can't wait for StarCraft 2!

@Gavbot: I'm tired of all the people who love to bash wow's ultra "less is more" art style. If it was cel-shaded Prince of Persia, you'd call it amazing, groundbreaking. Wow does not have bad graphics - they just do a heck of a lot more with 1 polygon than some designers do with millions. The simplicity of the graphical layout is what makes the seamlessness of the world, the social interaction, and the gameplay so much fun. They are also very tricky and cohesive with things like horizon lines, sky, and view distance. No matter where you make your character dwell or stand in the wow universe, it has small or large background elements which make it feel like you're looking at a drawing or a painting. I call that awesome.
they should really consider making a short flick or a movie...
it's been so long since i played wc3, but man this really brings back memories. i kinda like how it plays out with the narrative.
hopefully the boss fight with arthas is epic... though i wished it wasn't (assuming it is) a raid boss since i've been long disconnected from wow that i just have none of the gear everyone else gets from all the other raids and arenas.
Meh. Lots of CPU cycles wasted on a guy walking around on snow. Yeah the voice over was very dramatic and it plays up the lofty emo-osity of Arthas but as far as a CGI cinematic it leaves quite a bit to be desired.
Why?
Because most of that could be done with conventional film making. Animation shines when it does that which cannot be realized by another medium.
Its still high quality and the animation of the frost wyrm is nice, but I was expecting more from the full trailer..like maybe showing off player races and actual snippets of highly stylized content

I have to say... it's ok as a cinematic goes, but seems like it's just the wrong cinematic. This would have been perfectly awesome as the closing cinematic for The Frozen Throne. Perfectly awesome. It makes sense there, as you could take knowledge of Arthas's past and dad and his bitter, tragic fall all for granted. Plus you played as Arthas in that game, and really this looks like a cinematic for a game where you play as Arthas.
That Frost wyrm just blows me away, and I did get chills a bit when the army lit up the chasm with their blue hivemind light.
I can't even imagine what Blizzard would give us if they decided to make a game that wasn't necessarily playable by any computer and TRIED to put their cinematic quality graphics into their gameplay. But I'd want it. I'd want it bad.
If anybody could get a game looking like their cinematics and still have it play well, it'd be Blizzard.
I thought it was pretty cool. Kind of slow paced and not a lot happened, but still cool. I was expecting to see the races again, in Northerend of course. I was also really looking forward to actually SEEING a troll, (you couldn't see the one in the BC cinematic much at all and it was only a few seconds)however, I don't care at all about gnomes. Would have also liked to see a male Blood Elf, and something other than an Undead Warlock.
Personaly, I feel blizzard has the highest amount of polish, sure blizzard might be shorter, and do less, but they do alot, with mood, color, and presence, that not many can do that well. To me thats the art of it.

@qhue: You're missing the point. They already released a teaser trailer months back that focused on the new class, new additions and showed some fly-bys of the new areas. True, there isn't any actual combat in this trailer, but there doesn't need to be. With the actual intro trailer to the game they're finally throwing a bone to the lore-hounds that devour Blizzard's painstaking attention to back story(ie, me).
Absolutely chilling hearing Menethil talking to his son, not knowing the presence within him that would eventually strike him down in cold blood.
And emo-osity, what? That would suggest Arthas had an ounce of penance or sorrow within him for his actions. As the Lich King, he feels neither.

@Gestahl: Eh, it's your opinion. Can't really see the point in getting mad about it. I do think that even the most overloved things have to do something great in the first place, but I can certainly see why you'd be tired of hearing about Blizzard. I personally feel the same way towards Nintendo.
...Hopefully I diffused any flames instead of making em worse with that Nintendo part... ^_^'
And the people like you ARE as bad as those Final Fantasy VII schmoes are.
Blizzard does it's job well. They make fun playable games. WoW is a shitfest full of idiots and 5 year olds. But it's fun if you play to your own playstyle.
I'm not a Blizzard fanboy and I'd soon as see someone else come along with the balls to push them out of the way. But they have a way of making games that really makes them fun and easy to play, yet still challenging to the experienced gamer.
I enjoyed the trailer for what it showed and what it was. I suppose people can't help comparing it to other trailers, etc. As far as showing player type characters in the opening sequence... Well, there aren't that many new player features that would mesh well into an opening sequence. So I can understand that, rather than do a sequence similar to the previous two, they'd want to focus on the main content of this expansion: The Lich King. I am curious how they'll portray him in-game. Will he be sane? Will he have regrets? Can he be redeemed? The cynic in me says no to all of them. At anyrate, WoW is a dangerous game for me. Right now, I don't want to play again.

I always love the stunning visuals the Blizzard cinematic team cooks up with each game release but this movie seems a little too focused on Arthas and doesn't cater to the vanity of the players the way the other two do.
What I mean by that is: It's nice to hear the ironically tragic words of King Tyranus to his son and to see how the Great White Hope brought ruin to his people but what about the heroes? Where's the vignettes of the Troll Shaman on his Raptor? Where's the Dwarf Hunter with his pet Bear? Hell, we still haven't seen a pre-rendered Gnome.
I think the video would have served as a better introduction to Wrath of the Lich King if it spent less time on Arthas summoning the Wyrm and then added a few clips of the heroes defying his minions/rule.
I stopped playing WoW about a year ago because the game went down the toilet with horrible class imbalances, boring grind-fests and retarded story additions (Russian Space Devils? Really?! Maybe they should have just plundered more of Warhammer's canon before adding those blue embarrassments to the Warcraft universe?).
Oh well, the kids will buy anything if it has gorgeous cinematics... that's what has been keeping the Final Fantasy franchise afloat for decades now.
I'm going to offend a lot of people by saying this, but Blizzard are one of the most overrated developers in the world, and their fanbase is about as bad as that of Final Fantasy VII.

Agreed. Was not impressed all that much by the trailer. The bit with the Frostwyrm was cool. Arthas still looks like an over grown, corn-fed, obese, w/e person. His body size could use some work. I think he should be somewhere between a Human, and a Night Elf. And not as wide. He just isn't all that "realistic".

Blizzard makes the best CG movies in the videogame industry in my opinion, even better than Square Enix. It's just too bad they have to be for WoW...if they made a regular Warcraft RPG I would buy it in a second, but the MMORPG stuff is just a little too much.
@The Magnificen7: Couldn't agree more. I mean I played wow, quit twice and i am so happy i am not playing it anymore, but man this gets you all riled up on the inside wanting to play it.
And as they did with TBC they've done amazing with what content they've put into the game so far from beta testing.
@Channing: I don't recall Arthas ever complaining or whining. If something needed to be done, he did it, even if it turned out to be the wrong thing. He was never like, "Waah, waah, I killed a bunch of women and children at Stratholme" or, "Frostmourne has corrupted my soul, nooooo!"
He was more like, "I'll do anything it takes to free my people, even if it means becoming the very thing I hate."
@bakakensai: That dragon there would be a good old Frost Wyrm. Deathwing would look much more horrifying and would be a lot darker and have tears in him, from where fire would shoot forth. Or so one of the books say anyway.
Anyway, the intro cinematics looked stunningly good as usual. Give me a 90 minute animation film with this kind of animation and I'd buy it.
@ScytheRexx: No offence, but sometimes Metzen says one thing sometimes he says something else. This comes from the man who wend :"oh wait.. forgot all about that..." ;). Blizzard does use the Lich King and Arthas names quite unclear. There are alot of discusions about this going on, so until WOTLK and it is all revealed (especially with Blizzards way of retconning things) we can't be certain.
Great CG, but it just looks like something ripped from one of the Lord of the Rings films - not an original idea in it. Nevermind the fact that the game itself looks utterly different graphically, too. Much like comparing a Hanna Barbera cartoon to a widescreen CG blockbuster in stylistic terms. That's not a diss to WOW, just seems a bit weird to me.

I'm a bit confused about the trailer. It's neat, has a meaning especially if you've played WC3 and WC3TFT but atleast I thought that he summoned Sapphiron from under the ice. But then again, I dunno.

Now if only the game made you feel like the trailer did. It's too bad that the game lacks a tight story line that would make it feel more like a movie or book. I played wow for a long time and it's just a grind fest now. The trailer was awesome as usual.

@Cats:
Arthas himself is semi gone, This is the Lich King, an old and tortured soul of an Orc.

I notice that a lot of the newer MMORPGs have fairly high-end graphics, but all have really generic-looking environments and characters without any real personality.

It is why Blizzard calls him The Lich King, Arthas.

Highly doubtful. Sindragosa maybe. Another look at Saphiron.. possibly. But I doubt it's Blackwing. After Neltharion became Deathwing, he was eventually "destroyed by the other Dragon Aspects.

However, if you play Wrath, or are in beta. You can find his "resting" spot in Dragon Blight, at the "Maw of Neltharion"

@Hisdon: "go watch WAR's official trailer that just came out :p "
Didn't I just mention? That WAR trailer is made by Blur Studio, and I was talking about game companies. Well, I guess there has been no official word about that latest trailer, but so far every cinematic from Mythic has been made by Blur. And even so, I must say that what Blizzard shows here is polished way beyond the latest WAR trailer, making it seem even crude at times, something that it's certainly not on it's own.

Bland? I beg to differ!
Amazing stuff!
I'm really glad they went back to the story driven cinematics they had back in the Warcraft 3 days!
I was disappointed with the previous World of Warcraft ones. Don't get me wrong they're visually stunning, but they were no more than character reels with little to no significant story elements (with the exception of those 5 seconds of Illidan).
Too bad there's no single player anymore :(
Guess I'll just sit back and wait for other expansions and hopefully a good movie.
Go blizzard! :D

Well that was disappointing.
Great in terms of CG, but Blizzard CG always is. The actual stuff of it, though? Who cares. All their previous cinematics have been focused on the players, showing different classes doing awesome things.
This was meh, I don't care about bosses. The big powerful badass is going to be on farm in six months, and one out of every 200 Tauren on the server is going to be running around with Frostmourne.

@goddessakasha:
Burning Crusade's trailer was much better imo. Even though the actual expansion lacked what Wrath clearly has. Depth, and above all, an unparalleled fun factor.

once again blizzard pulls off an amazing piece of animation,
for those who have played WC3 they will love this. though most dont see it this trailer really has alot of lore aspects in it. from arthas's father doing the voice over, to arthas resurecting the frost wyrmm saphiron (at least thats who i think it is) to how he kind of does the exact oposite of what his father meant for him. its really nice and subtley done.
yeah blizzard you'll have more of my money...

It seems to have been made for the core wow gamer (which there are 10 million of) and not to attract new people to the flock, which is totally fine. It is what this expansion is about after all, with no newbie zones and such like BC did with the 2 new races.

No offence, but sometimes Metzen says one thing sometimes he says something else. This comes from the man who wend :"oh wait.. forgot all about that..." ;). Blizzard does use the Lich King and Arthas names quite unclear.
