Xbox 360 Spring Update Coming Out In November
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:20 AM on August 26, 2008
RPG-TV got a briefing last week on the Xbox Live Experience and was told that the Fall dashboard update would be hitting in November, i.e. this fall. Makes sense to me. Before I start sounding too glib, while the spring update has routinely landed in November, an update of this size could have theoretically been pushed back to later in the year. So it is nice to have Microsoft telling some on the record that we can expect our sexy new look and deeper features in three months or so. Preview of New Xbox Experience + LIPS [RPG-TV]

@Anaralia: You're right. They need to be more original. Like how Sony introduced motion controllers.
Oh wait...no. I meant Trophies.
Wait, crap. I meant avatars.
Wait...awww forget it.

@LittleBigPlaneteer:
For people in areas where on demand or some other cable service is lacking this is huge. The numbers for movie rentals via XBL show this. Im in NY and Im still excited by this. Sure its not alot of new content but its free and it provides more options. The ability to watch movies with friends online is also going to be great fun. Mystery Science theater fun. And while its only 10,000 titles now it will grow soon. Thats the whole thinking behind this partnership and the others Netflix has going, like the LG deal they have.

as you are flipping the menu to the right, options disappear to the left. having all options viewable is much better.
this is like stacking your cards vs. laying them all out to see.(this goes for viewing netflicks movies and other downloadables too)
i'm looking forward to installing games, but i'm hoping there is a way to keep the current look of the dashboard.

@Modus_Operandi:
The Netflix addition is mildly overrated. I love Netflix (only been a member for like 4 months now) and I personally like their instant collection, but I wouldn't say the overall selection is great for your typical viewer. I love classics, westerns, and documentaries so it's great for me. There just is hardly any "new" movies other than Indie ones.
I think a lot of people don't realize that. They just see the headline "Netflix coming to the 360" and think it's huge.

I'm really keen on getting my hands on this update, but not so much for the visual overhaul-- I'm take it or leave it on that, though if they really have improved the responsiveness of the UI I'll be grateful. I just want to finally be able to have proper 16:10 support for computer monitors-- although Microsoft haven't confirmed support for 1920x1200, just 1440x900 and 1680x1050... I'm hoping they simply forgot to mention the 1920x1200, or a lot of 24" monitor owners are going to be displeased. Bring it on, Microsoft!

I'm just glad they're not going to wait until christmas and let everyone, including new folks try and get it all at the same time.
Heck, with a little luck they'll even release the update per region one day after the other to keep the servers going, seeing how well they've handled stress in the past.

It is about the Netflix. Huge feature that. Also the playing games off the HDD is an underlooked point. That sets things up for more games to be delivered via DL, like PSN does now. And anything that makes my 360 quieter can only be good.
Hopefully these smoothes out navigating LIve. Its ok, but I still prefer the PS3's UI.

Much nicer than blades to me, but still not sexy enough for my tastes. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but I kind of like my interfaces to look "cutting edge". I think XMB has that sort of sexy futuristic look. But when it boils down to it, as long as navigation is fine and it works, the aesthetics will take a backseat

I'm really excited about this update. As an upset Wii owner, I'm wondering if Microsoft can fill the void that once was Nintendo. The Avatars look like what Mii's should have been, and as long as the clothes are priced 20-100points, I have no problem with spending a few leftover.

I would post some insult here cause I'm so negitive but I think the dash picture is more then enough...maybe put a " Welcome to two years ago " or " Welcome to Nintendo...yeah yeah this is Nintendo " or " Welcome to hell " in the avatars chat bubble.
Anyhow...anyone want to make bets on how many Kotaku readers get bricked systems from the update?

I like the new look but I still can't get my head around how blatantly MS is trying to ride on Nintendo's waves. Bring on the "Newton" controller and people will be buying Xboxes because of brand confusion. They are certainly entitled to do it, but don't think I've seen anything like that from such a large corporation.

I have an ambivalent wait and see attitude about the new dash. However I am VERY excited about the new party system that will allow you to share your personal picture, audio and video files in a party with up to 8 friends. I wonder if there will be some kind of size limit to the video files? If not, there will be nothing to keep people from watching their pirated movies with friends.

Unlike some of you, I don't really see this as them ripping of XMB at all. It looks closer to their Media Center interface more than anything. I mean you have the tabs on the left, which lead to different options in the center. That's just like Media Center.

And given that your comment read like a defense of HOME, you can understand my assumption that you were accusing him of having a pro-Microsoft bias.

I could have described my rebuttal to the game use better, so I'll take myself to task on that. The fact that a game uses, or better stated, has the potential to use a system's functionality, does not require that it do-so at launch of the title. Remember, this is software we're talking about.

Personally, I'm just hoping they eliminate any lag at all. Playing on both PS3 and 360's *dashboards*, I feel like the 360 feels laggy and slow, PS3 nails the speed. If this new interface makes it feel more speedy and quicker to navigate I say it's full of potential win.

While I am excited about burning my games to my HDD for faster loading etc., I've been really wondering about one thing. How will this update effect all of my fancy schmancy dashboard THEMES? I mean, I can't really see how they'll be implemented to this new dashboard. And, I enjoy switching them somewhat frequently. Even if they are used somehow, it doesn't seem like they'll be nearly as effective at changing the look of my dashboard. Anyone have any info/ideas/thoughts on this?

@spacecoffin2: Sorry to get back to you so late, this update will make money because it will make people fire up their Xbox 360's, it will make news on sites such as this, and it will make people get Netflix accounts or renew a possible expired xbox live account. All of that will make people interact with the marketplace increasing downloads and profit. And btw Microsoft said they would be doing stuff with "outfits" as you call them since the launch of Xbox 360, its old news way before the launch of the Wii. People need to understand that if something sells some place it might sell on the 360, or Ps3 or Wii or whatever. If you make word of mouth, put it in front of faces, YOU might not make a purchase here or there, but someone else will. That's business.

@MitchCumstein-III: Agreed. I like my gamerpic, but I LOVE my Chuck Norris Mii. I would love them more if they were more customizable, and that is where MS' avatars come in. Also, I don't like any of the current gamerpics available on XBL. Why can't we just make our own? :/
As for the dashboard, I'm personally sick of the blades. All the text covers up my spiffy backgrounds and they don't do anything fancy... just slide from one side of the screen to the other. Excuse me while I go take a nap.

I will probably get kicked out of the club for saying this, but this is going to be a phenomenal update. Everyone seems to love the Miis, and now Microsoft is adding Miis. Does that make them awful? NO. It might make the unoriginal, but unoriginal DOES NOT mean it will be bad.
I got my Wii the day it launched, but it wasn't until 5 or 6 months later that I started messing with the Miis. I ended up loving them, but soon was wondering when is Nintendo going to update their Miis. You know giving us more customization, more clothes, hair etc. etc. etc.? When are they going to actually incorporate them into an online community?
Here we are almost two years later and nothing has been updated with the Miis, except that awful Check Mii Out crap. The Miis were a great idea, but avatars weren't created by Nintendo. Nintendo did a great job intergrating them into their platform in an innovative way, but they haven't evolved at all from when they were implemented. In this day and age with technology like it is, complacency is just begging the competition to take your ideas and expand them. Microsoft is doing just that, and I have a feeling it is going to be great...Copied or not.

@Omnimon:
What he said. I'm pretty neutral in the console wars, only having any measure of bile for the Wii. Even then, there are more than enough games I have enjoyed on it and wish I hadn't sold mine for.
That said, I do tend to prefer Sony's offerings in games, something that has been well established among those on this site who know me. I have yet to give out my Gamertag while readily giving out my PSN ID, and I am also on my sixth (count 'em! SIX) 360. And I have made it know the only reason it sticks around my house and I have put up with constant hardware failures is for Dead Rising, my very favorite game of this generation.
I said what I said in reference to my previous pessimism involved with Sony's continued promises this generation, especially regarding Home. Constant delays, and overzealous and premature advertising has worn me down to a state where I am considering Home vaporware until I am actively downloading it onto my hard drive.
And yes, I did predict MS getting their system out before Sony as soon as it was announced. And I lamented on the fact that should that happen, MS loyalist would have further ammo in their "SONY SUX LOL" salvo's they love to send the PS3's way.

@Littlefields: I should take a step back and say that it's go elements of Coverflow or Frontrow along with XMB.
But going by the videos I've found, it's pretty much a conglomeration of those things.

Every time that there is some change announced, people become afraid. Relax people, the new XBL will be JUST FINE. You'll all be JUST FINE.

@Anaralia: Except for the XMB is IDENTICAL to the Windows Media Center UI; which of course came BEFORE XMB. Well except the XMB goes left to right and THEN up and down, and the Media Center goes up and down and THEN left to right. So, if you want to say that the new dash is a rip-off of the XMB, you'd first have to say the XMB is a rip-off of Windows Media Center.

@PapaBear434: See, the perfect explanation. Your original post was written with bias to the pessimism you had previously expressed. Thanks.
Six 360s!? You're a stronger man than I. I'm only on number 2 here.
What's funny to me is that I really do not like being involved in 'fanboyism' (I believe all three current gen consoles have a purpose in my entertainment cabinet), and when I simply said you wrote a post with a bias, it automatically turned into me saying you were a console fanboy.

@doubtful: Because it is self-evident that avatars themselves are not an entire 'system', I claimed that the post was written with some sort of bias. Which it was.
I don't see what's wrong with my post; you assumed I was calling him an MS fanboy, when in fact all I was saying is that the MS and Sony avatars and the systems in which they are used are very different, and that the post was written by someone with a biased opinion.
I stand by my posts still.

When the update comes out, I'll wait a couple of days and see if there are any 360 killing bugs in it they haven't been able to find. Would be ironic on the 2nd anniversary of my 360 running with no problems if it was instead knackered by an update.

If this is snappier than the current Dashboard, I think MS has a real winner. Just like I think the XMB is really cool in it's own right.

I am interested in seeing what this new update has to offer but I would personally like to see a more user customizable menu interface. I want to put my own backgrounds on my xbox like I do with my PC, It would kick ass to be able to have custom menu buttons as well.
I know Microsoft is all about keeping things locked down but come on, every background that they do sell is practically a billboard, why do we have to pay for this crap? I guess I have just been spoiled by my PSP.
Not to mention most of our Themes are covered up by Huge advertisements, so whats the point? I can't even shuffle the images around, the Force Unleashed Theme's best image is on the settings screen!
We need more options dealing with theme customizations and menu alignment dammit! :D

Nah. That's why MS didn't do the usual Spring update this year. They have to have been working on this one at least since the last Fall/Winter update. Probably longer.

about it looking like the XMB i have a ps3 and yes it is close but not the same and I welcome the attempt to make my gaming easier. It reminds me more of the Media Center on windows medea center edition, but white instead of blue.
