PSP Online Access: Shit Just Got Real
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:20 PM on September 2, 2008
Good news, fans of the internet. The PSP will be getting direct access to the PlayStation Store this fall, eliminating the need to travel through the tubes via your PlayStation 3 or PC to secure downloadable goodies for Sony's handheld. According to a report from IGN, a future firmware update will let PSP owners surf the store from the comfort of their toilets or local coffee houses, making theme-grabbing a breeze.
Don't junk your PS3s yet, though, as Sony is also planning to introduce a new feature that will let you take your ad hoc-only PSP games online, simulating infrastructure mode by way of your PlayStation 3. That means select titles that were previously playable only locally will be playable with folks nationwide. Note that "select", because it looks like not every title will make the jump online via your PS3.

No one has mentioned Ace Combat X. This is game was majorly let down by fsckin Ad Hoc. With this new feature 'hopefully' we can finally get Infrastructure like MP Ace Combat action on the PSP!

@Knoxximus (360/PSN): There's no easy way to get Disgaea or Tales of the World to work, even if anybody is on (which they aren't). XLinkKai works wonders with FFT and MHF2, though...

@Knoxximus (360/PSN): I completly forgot about that O.O
I'd consider one as well if the DS3 adapter AND this for the games I listed was available. Seriously, I need to actually get somewhere in MHF2, since single player is hard as hell and I'm moving at a snail's pace.

@Kirbysuperstar: Agreed. If they do this with Monster Hunter, it would take away almost all the sting of the series going to the Wii, as I wouldn't have been able to upload my PSP data.
Man, imagine this with the TV-Out cables! *drool*
And, if the rumor is true about the Sixaxis/DS3 adapter, I WILL break down and buy a new brighter screened PSP-3000.
In a heartbeat.

@Pattypie: That needs to be an all-purpose movie sequel subtitle.
Forrest Gump 2: Shit Just Got Real
Mary Poppins 2: Shit Just Got Real
etc.
On the subject of all-purpose sequel subtitles, I also recommend "The Bitch is Back".
Titanic 2: The Bitch Is Back
The Last Temptation of Christ 2: The Bitch is Back
etc.
(Don't kill me for that last one :p)

I call 'bullshit' and/or 'shenanigans'.
Why would the ad-hoc networking emulation be for 'select' games? There's already free software out there to do just that! (Though I have never gotten it to work, thus my interest.)
How does simply re-routing network packets through the intarweb tubes suddenly get more complicated just because Sony is setting up to do it on a more native level?

I've been pretty impressed with what Sony has done with the PSP. They continue to upgrade it in subtle ways that make the package more and more complete, more and more appealing.
If they would only add a second analog nub and use a glass plate over the lcd instead of plastic to minimize scratching.

I've been meaning to dust off my PSP lately. After I beat Crisis Core I had no reason to go back to it. So this news is pretty exciting. Now I just need a PS3, and I'll be all set. :P
Hopefully.. Disgaea PSP will be one of those "Select" games.

@TheBakachan: I think it's because they'll essentially host connection servers specific to certain games rather than a generic connection server. Perhaps more important though, is that I'm guessing that a lot of ad-hoc games weren't designed to compensate for lag. It gets more complicated if Sony tries to create a friendly network for connections instead of a "just make it work!" interface.
I fully approve of the post title. In the future, I would also accept "Oh snap!" as a post prefix for similarly ridiculizzle posts.

@Strangelove:
too bad almost everything sony adds for the psp has already been done by fans outside of sony. xlink kai already allows funneling of the ad hoc games (though not all). ps1 emulation was done on psp before sony put ps1 games on the psn store (done better might i add b/c of popsloader allowing u to use different firmware kernels for the ps1 games if a newer version made the game glitchy)

If they make the gathering hall public or something then you'll have a bit of a problem with noobs who cant play and downloaded their save messing up your fatalis runs and the like, but even that in itself is awesome.

Say what you will about the PSN but I admire Sony's dogged determination as it forges ahead. It's funny how people laud XBL but are so quick to dismiss the PSN despite the age difference between the two.
In a shorter amount of time the PSN and the PS family's services have been upgraded modified in leaps and bounds whereas XBL has remained more or less the same. Around this stage and looking towards the future, I surmise that the PSN will indeed rival XBL.

If they bring this out simultaneously with the PSN points cards, eliminating the need for both PC/PS3 access and credit card usage, the PSN will gain mass amount of profit. Soon as both are available, I am gettin' me some good old fashioned Crash 2, the best platformer of all time!

What's the deal with having to do this through the PS3? Is it because the PSP doesn't have a hard drive and it would be too much extra code to fit in a firmware update? PSP isn't powerful enough to run the ad-hoc-to-internet client/host? It just seems strange that you couldn't have the ad-hoc-to-internet feature enabled directly on the PSP.
