Final Fantasy XIII For PSP Is Way, *Way* Off

Square Enix announced it would be bringing Final Fantasy XIII Agito to the PSP in August, sparing fans of the series much mobile platform kvetching. And while Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura says that the title is currently running on PSP hardware and spitting out new screen shots, don't expect it any time soon.
He tells Dengeki, by way of Final Fantasy-XIII.net, that Agito won't see the light of a UMD drive until after both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII publish. Yes, that's from the same source as the Squenix might charge for the standalone FFXIII demo business, so have some Mrs. Dash on hand to stave off hypertension.
Suppose it all makes sense, from a publishing standpoint, but that doesn't make epic wait feel any less daunting. At least we'll all have jet packs and snazzy silver jump suits by then...

That means the PSP2 will be backwards compatible with old PSP1 games!

So...Agito XIII is going to be on the PsP2, right? Because I can't see Sony having a ten-year plan for the PsP, too.
I mean, in 2012, Nintendo will probably be on the DS3.

Yay! I can play this game and fly around in a jet pack at the SAME TIME! It will be AMAZING! Who knows... Maybe Final Fantasy outfits will be in by then, too.

You people have little faith. For all intents and purposes XIII is more or less entering completion stage and vsXIII isn't terribly far behind that, maybe another 6-7 months. Even if vsXIII suffers a couple minor setbacks, the fact that Agito is already running on the PSP shows that there's been a lot of progress already. Plus as SE has demonstrated in the past each project has its own team. For a system that has been around longer, is easier to program for, and has had experience being programmed for its not like SE is being terribly taxed. Both vsXIII and Agito will be worked on at the same time so its not like they have to actually finish one project before moving on to the next. Spring '10 is probably the earliest estimate but I wouldn't expect it to slip much beyond that.

a source close to sony says that FF13 on da PSP will be available on the Playstation Network via PS3 console. The UMD is the fail-safe for this method of distribution; if money fails to be made the UMD will make the sales at cost of higher production values.

Square's development cycles are getting ridiculous. It's nearly a given that any time they announce a new AAA title, we won't be playing it for a good three years.
And their president wonders why profits are down.

Well it's nice to know that they'll be focusing on XIII and vsXIII first. Assuming those two will have the stronger, more impressive story, it won't disappoint us if agito falls a bit short :x
