XBLA This Week: Pirates, Ninjas, Spaceships, And Gin
Posted by Mike Fahey at 10:30 AM on September 3, 2008
Now that the Summer of Live Arcade is over, Xbox Live Arcade is back to business as usual in a rather unusual fashion, releasing not one, not two, but three new games. Tomorrow sees the release of the ultimate battle between good and stupid as Blazing Lizard's Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball hits the XBLA, along with CrunchTime Games' space-shooter Shred Nebula, both at 800 Microsoft points. Joining the two bigger titles is Gin Rummy (400 Microsoft points), a card game I am pretty sure my grandmother used to play, though I might be mixing that up with Cribbage.
So, you guys planning on picking up any of these? Which ones? If your answer is Gin Rummy, congratulations on figuring out how to use a computer to surf the web. Tell your helpful grandson I said hi!
This week on Arcade: Shred Nebula, Pirates vs Ninjas Dodgeball and Gin Rummy [Xbox Live's Major Nelson]

Gin rummy is the hottest card game there is. Now if only they had pirates playing it versus ninjas in space :/

Shred Nebula may be a pretty cool sleeper hit. The videos reminded me of Star Control-style combat with deeper gameplay & varied environments.

I am going to try the trial of Pirates Vs. Ninjas, but I doubt I will actually go and buy any after Castle Crashers took all my points.

@scotty: Plus, how many dodge ball games does one service need? Really.

Well, believe it or no, I'm into the Gin Rummy game. I love the digital conversions of card games that I can relax with on the couch (instead of at my computer)

Less PvN & Shred Nebula, more Duke Nukem 3D & Mega Man 9 please.

I believe there will also be robots, thus they win. Ninjas get a close second followed by the zombies and pirates get dead last because they are boring.

i was looking forward to Pirates vs Ninja dodgeball, just for the sheer fun of pelting friends on XBL, but all the game trailers and teasers made it look more of a chore than it would be worth. Guess ill stick to crashing in on little kids in the park.......

Summer of arcade ended. No need to look forward to anything good coming out now. P vs N looks really, really dumb. Seriously.

I'm guessing none of the above. I was unimpressed by Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball at PAX (and I had rather low expectations for it in the first place.) Haven't paid enough attention to Shred Nebula, and don't care much for card games.

Actually i'll probably pick up Gin Rummy if any of them at all. I've spent too much money on the other games this summer to really go after the more expensive stuff.
It appears the Microsoft is listening to gamers demands about more original content and less ports on the XBLA. Too bad, I really enjoyed some of the cheaper ports. It seems like almost every original game is $10 to $15 (or even $20), which isn't bad but it does add up.

@TearsandScreams: Someone at Microsoft realized that you can get all those games at Gamestop for $10 less and it doesn't eat half your 20gig HD.
What I would like to see is them continuing the BC updates through Xbox Originals. If they don't want to develop BC on a game by game basis for free, let them charge for it. I'd play $15 to play Riddick or The Warriors on my 360.

What on earth happened to xbox originals? I expected most of the library to be made available, and it just seems to have been abandoned. I'm not too bothered about any of these games, but I really have to cut down on games anyway, such is the life of going from work to studentdom.

Shred Nebula looks pretty awesome. I saw one of the devs demo it last week, but can't remember where (maybe X-play?) It reminds me of the game "X-Pilots" I used to play in college, which was a blast. Basically a fast-paced multiplayer space shooter. I'll definitely be dropping $10 on it this week.

I hate to say it, but I'm a Playing Card game nut. I own Spades, Hearts, Solitaire, Catan, Carcassone, Uno, Texas Hold'em, & (it's kind of a card game) Poker Smash. I'll likely pick this game up. I spent many an after school day playing Rummy.

Why doesn't MS release an arcade-style sports game...like a fun Baseball (Baseball Stars), NHL, or arcade-style Madden, and NBA games.

Shred Nebula kinda looks like Armada for the Dreamcast, only with less RPGing and more Deathmatching. Sadly, the RPGing is what made Armada worthwhile (to me). Pirates v. Ninjas would be a Wii purchase for me (but only because I am a rabid Nintendo fanboy! Xbox and PS3 suXXoRzz!!) And Gin Rummy at 400 MS Points is about $3 more than a deck of cards, so I'll pass...

@evilralphwiggum:
I find it funny, how whenever things are coming out, and one is spoken of poorly, most of the time people come out of the wood-work to support it.
.."Oh and Barbie horse adventures comes out this week, and we ALL know how popular that one is, get your reservations in now!"
several seconds later...
.."Gears 2 and Little Big Planet? Meh... I cant wait for that shweet Barbie Horse Adventures!... The editor, etc. are crazy, must be insecure, etc."
Anyways, curious about both PvN and Shred, not so much for the Gin, considering I have never played a game of it in my life lol. Frankly, I dont know anyone who has. But, of course the more diversity the better.

Can't wait for Shred Nebula. The game looks tight. Like SubSpace on steroids.
Plus it's made by Street Fighter designers. Suppose to have some kind of fighting game aspects. The videos look solid.
