You Will Remember The Sonic Chronicles Story 'For A While'
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:20 PM on September 3, 2008
Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic developer BioWare is churning out RPG Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for SEGA. A Sonic RPG? Nothanks.jpg. But a BioWare Sonic RPG? Okay, we're at least receptive. When vaguely talking plot, the game's art director Joel MacMillan said:
I think this is obviously best left for the audience's first playthrough to find out. I will say that the overall story is broken up into two Acts, the first taking place in a very familiar Sonic World, and the second branching out into something we haven't seen yet, something a little darker (not just visually). I'm confident that what has been done with the story in Sonic Chronicles will be something that fans will remember for a while, and will hopefully be expanded in the future.
Sonic fans remember a lot that has happened to that blue hedgehog in the last few years, none of it good. Break the trend, BioWare, do it. Not for your own sake or SEGA's sake, but Sonic's.

It upsets me to see a quality story wasted on a portable game.
Bioware, just wtf do you think are you doing?

STOP!
If Elise didn't 'kiss' Sonic, he woulda died.
And then Solaris would have killed everyone.
Including Sonic!
INCLUDING SONIC!..
.. So it's just me who played Sonic The Hedgehog for X360?
Thought so. ._.;

Remembering isn“t exactly a good thing.
We all still remember the fiasco of almost every non-Genesis Sonic game. His stupid sidekicks, Shadow, HUMAN KISSING and everything in between.
Hell, we still remember Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, September 11th, the Nazis, everything.

Urgh... about half the Sonic games after Sonic Adventure 2 did suck mightily. He has had some great games (Advance series on the Advance, Rush series on the DS) but his 3-D titles have been nothing short of abysmal.
Maybe this is the game that'll change Sonic for the better.

"Sonic fans remember a lot that has happened to that blue hedgehog in the last few years, none of it good."
You're mostly right; Sonic Rush was a great game.
I'm really looking forward to Sonic RPG. Even if it turns out to be a bad Sonic game, I'm expecting it to be a solid RPG.

@sixonedoesitall: Um, what's the problem? The way I see it, Sonic needs any good games he can get.

Here's something we can all console ourselves with: by virtue of Sonic '06's ending itself, the game is not part of continuity. It was a lame "time loop is killed and everyone forgot everything" kind of ending, but it means the game never happened.
So from now on, Sonic has a relatively clean slate.
...If you ignore Shadow.

Stole the words right outta my mouth. However, Bioware have released some jawdropping games so I can't help but have some sort of allegiance to them. I'm sure we can happily entrust them to make something that doesn't totally blow.

@Aethyr:
Certainly he does, but the last good handheld game I can remember playing was Poke'mon Red, and that was what, 10+ years ago?
Handheld games are the direct to DVD releases of the gaming world... they just never make box office.
Even if it ended up being the best handheld game ever made, it still could never come close to having the same potential as a pc or console game.

@Do Kesubei: The difference between Rush and this Chronicles is that Rush is a true Sonic game, a fast-paced side-scroller in old-school Sonic fashion. This is the same reason the old Sonic Advance series was popular.
Whenever I see anything about this Sonic RPG, I can't help but think, "WHY WOULD YOU MAKE AN RPG WITH SONIC?! THIS ISN'T WHAT WE WANT! WE WANT OLD-SCHOOL STYLE!" But, what I have to keep in mind -- for my sanity -- is that these are certainly the same feelings that Mario fans felt back in '96. I am biased about SMRPG (wuv,) but, the way I see it, if Square can do it, so can Bioware. I'll keep an eye on the reviews and buy (or not) accordingly.

@Wolfers: Absolutely. Outside of Tails and Knuckles, the rest of Sonic's "pals" are useless garbage. It's like everyone Sonic knows is some failed Xtreme mascot from the late 90's. Ditch the useless cast members and get back to what works - Sonic, going fast.

@sixonedoesitall: You're excluding Japan, I assume? Let us not forget about the Pokemon series and, more recently, Monster Hunter.
@CloudHiro: I enjoyed Heroes a lot, but it felt like it should've been a portable game. The Sonic Wii game wasn't either.
@vid3oman64: Yeah, I'm hoping Chronicles draws in people who don't like Sonic games. I despise Mario games and don't understand how people find them fun, but I adore Mario RPG (and the Paper Mario series, up to Super Paper Mario).

@Sanjo: your not the only one, I loved the 06 sonic game myself. they just should have ironed out the glitches before releaceing it.
I dont know why recent sonic games have no love, from the rush series on the DS to the 3D ones I'd liked almost every one of them. almost. Heroes is one of the games that I removed from that list <_<

DO WANT.
I trust Bioware with the holy grail of all licenses, the Star Wars license. So I have no qualms whatsoever with letting them have a go with the Sonic license. They couldn't be any worse than Team Sonic or whoever the hell claims to be in charge of these recent Sonic "games."
In fact, I'm pretty sure this game is going to be really fun. And it's going to be a perfect handheld game for my DS. PLUS Super Mario RPG came out for the VC yesterday... I need to get on that.

They need to have a few changes:
1) Dr. Eggman: ...Guys, I'm changing my name back to Robotnik. Less lame.
2) Shadow: I've decided to go hiking in the mountains and NEVER come back.
3) Big, Rouge, Chaos, Vanilla, other random characters die in a horrible accident involving three darts, an electric wire, and a bag of lima beans. .... ...Tails, Knuckles, Cream/Cheese, and Amy...can stay, as long as they take their 75 foot restraining order Sonic got on them seriously.
4) The human population in Sonic's World die of an epidemic plague, possibly making them zombies- or...just killing them.
5) The gang eats this new gum that they realize has raspberryX in it, their biggest allergy, which swells up their voicebox to where they can NEVER talk again, opting to communicate through smiles and angry eyes.
6) The band that plays new Sonic songs realize that their songs aren't all that jazzy and quit, opting to finally fulfill getting those Accounting degrees they've always wanted.

It'll be good as long as the company WANTS it to be good. Sonic is a good character, it's just that (Sammy)SEGA doesn't know how to use him right. Look at Nintendo with Brawl and Dimps with the Advance and Rush Series. Golden, return to form. Now look at everything after Heroes. Shadow, fail. '06, even buggier fail. Secret Rings, less of a fail than the last two, but not by much. Notice a trend there? All those games were made in-house by SEGA. I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware could validate all the characters that SEGA has churrned out, because guess what - they're not stupid SEGA is.

To sum it up, i didnt liked SR, not one bit.
SA on the other hand keeps the remiscense of the last that was good of sonic. SA2 and 3 sucked (2 much more than 3)

@Mesren_Makai: I'm only going to respong to #6. What band, pray tell, are you talking about? A lot of bands have performed songs for recent Sonic games. If you're referring specifically to the tandum of Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli, then do yourself a favor: If you have any taste for 90's metal, listen to the album "Double Eclipse" from Hardline. If you still think Mr. Gioeli should "get an accountants degree", then you're clearly biased towards those overrated Genesis MIDIs ang are beyond hope.

And another thing that should help move on: The story of Sonic 2006 was kind enought to retcon itself out of existence, so in terms of the series continuity, "The kiss" never happened...and Bioware won't even reference it. Like I said, let it go people.

Okay! I fuckin' get it! You don't like Sonic having a JRPG relationship with an anime princess! You don't have to keep hammering it home so hard home so hard, Kotaku! It's been two years since that game and that horse is really starting to stink...so can we move on now? This game looks too good, and if you keep pining over the series' past missteps you risk missing out on this potential gem.
