Castle Crashers Title Update Is Coming, It's Coming
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on September 4, 2008
Castle Crashers is great. So much fun. Sadly that fun is often tempered by serious technical glitches in the game, from wonky online connectivity to stuff like erasing your entire game progress. It's annoying, yes, but The Behemoth promise (cross their hearts!) that a fix is on its way.
We just got off the phone with Microsoft and we had a great talk about updating Castle Crashers, YES!! Looks like we're on our way to getting this title update out and the bigger issues like saving and online connectivity resolved, in addition to other bugs that have been reported.
Unfortunately that's as precise as they get, saying they "don't have a specific time frame yet" for when we can expect the release, but it can't be too far off. Can it?

BTW, make sure you level up all you want before the patch. I'm sure the boomerang exploit will be fixed.

@Kytano-Skorpius:
You guys both suck balls, can you really only play a game for a week? Go back to your "addictive" multiplayer games while I enjoy this still.

I hope they patch it soon. I LOVE this game. Most fun I have with a title in months. Just have to fix those issues.

On that note, local play is much more fun anyway.

Too bad they couldn't have been on that, I dunno, a WEEK ago when I actually cared about online play in that game?

Fun game, bad coding. I know it's probably a coincidence, but this game RROD'd my system, and that of someone else I know, within 5 minutes of each other...so hopefully, y'know, the patch will fix that.
Because I don't think I'm gonna ever play the game again, as much as I liked it before it killed my system. =/

You know this got me thinking. A few articles back the creator of Braid was bitching about the Microsoft Certification process and hinted that it stifled his game. I've also heard from Arstechnica's Opposable Thumbs that many developers have raised concerns about the process specifics and time it takes to receive a certification.
So my point is, if Microsoft is sitting there dorking around with a checklist, how the fuck is this shit happening? What VALUE does their certification process bring to the developer and more importantly us the consumer? Obviously there's no real process oriented testing of the game's operation. Otherwise this immensely blatant failure wouldn't have squeaked through. I understand system certification or "soakes" as some call them. Which is the process of determining whether the system or software actually works as spec'd. But in light of this recent pooch screw in Castle Crashers I've come to suspect Microsoft's Certification is more akin to a bullshit nitpick fest.
ex.
1. Is this game using our trademarks appropriately
2. Are all the words spelled correctly
3. Is the user license displayed at startup
Lots of small things which are certainly important but really don't check if the game fucking works as intended.
All I know is Microsoft Certified the game for whatever the hell that means. And it doesn't work entirely as promised. So what the hell good is their certification and why as a consumer should I care if a game is certified or not?

@VakeroRokero: Thinking about your "720" thing, I wonder if the next Xbox console will be backwards compatable with our DLC, and downloaded games. It'd be a real kick in the balls if it isn't.
Likewise for the PS3, and I'd hope the next Nintendo Console can carry games over from the Wii.

@Mister_Jack: Effectively, you can throw the boomerang and get it stuck behind the hitbox on certain bosses. The sheer amount of hits per second the boomerang does when it's stuck there gives you a lot of experience very quickly.
@LanciePants: Pure assumption, but I'm guessing the certification process is more for the sake of making sure the changes made won't crash the console or cause spontaneous combustion, etc. Many PC games have released updates that can seriously compromise certain computers under certain conditions. Considering the need for a more 'user friendly experience' for consoles, I imagine the cert process makes sure nothing will cause the end user to hate their console due to a certain update wrecking their system. Could be completely off base, but that's the only reasoning I can work out.

@SilentSeraphin:
No man, I hear ya. My whole rant is based upon assumption as well. If someone can point to a website and say there Lanciepants, this is what certification brings to the table I'd love to see it. When I think of certification, it's usually an accreditation that the software does what it's suppose to AND won't blow your system up.
I guess my jist is with developers giving compliant to the certification process. And the certification process obviously not catching goofs like this, then what does it do exactly?

@toejam316: You know what I hope the next Ninty system can do? Actually store more than 10 fucking games (wii-ware games for the record) on its internal memory. But yeah, bc would also be a plus for all systems.

In no way was any of that necessary. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.
I've lost a few save files and it pissed me off to no end. And now I'm just leaving the damn thing on. *insert RROD joke* okay now that that painfully unique and in no way tired pony is beaten I can say the following;
fuck the problems, this game is still gold, buy it and don't bitch out. Anyone who doesn't buy Castle Crashers is a...TERRORIST!

Only strange problem i got so far was a very strange bug that froze the game... I played the game localy with 3 friends and just after the sunken temple section my friend saw an X an thought he should dig it up. Well the moment he stuck his shovel in the ground, the game froze :p
dunno why though, I'm positivt we'e dug up that X before. Anyone had a similar problem?

"We just got off the phone with Microsoft and we had a great talk about updating Castle Crashers, YES!!"
Is he really making a victory speech about how Microsoft will let the developer patch a buggy game? The news would be if it was the other way around. YES!!?

There is also an issue with the boomerang glitch and the catfish boss where upon beating the boss, the entire screen turns into a series of horizontal brown lines. Doesn't reset after you get taken back to the map either.
I'm starting to get annoyed with all these major bugs with arcade titles. SSFIITHDR beta also had multiplayer that didn't work either. AND it would hard lock your 360. How does something this major slip past their exhaustive, months-long certification process?

Castle Crashers is the first game in years that my wife is actually interested in playing with me. I'll take all the glitches you throw at me as long as you create something that interests my wife.
Thanks Behemoth. You deserve a gold star. (and my cash)

@Mister_Jack: yah, the game works by giving you exp by the number of hits you do, not by how many enemies you kill. so getting a boomerang suck behind a boss, constantly doing 1 damage, allows you to level up very quickly.

I was playing this local co-op and at one point it seemed like we lost our characters. After logging out of our 360 profiles and logging back in they re-appeared, though. Bizarre.
Absolutely fantastically amazing and hilariously fun game, bugs aside. The combo of RPG elements and crisp beat-em-up gameplay is sublime.
