Force Unleashed: The Book Tops NY Times Best-Sellers List
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on September 4, 2008
Early reviews are in for Force Unleashed (the game), and at this (early!) stage things aren't looking as good as Lucasarts would have hoped. If that scoring trend continues, the game will sell a few copies (if only for the branding), yeah, but it won't set the world on fire like the company were probably banking on. Ah well. Least the book's doing well! Force Unleashed the novel topped the New York Times best-sellers list for hardcover fiction over the weekend. So, are Star Wars novels taken more seriously by their creators than Star Wars games? Or are SW book lovers just suckers? Who knows! Could be all of the above.

Every game has hype though. That's part of marketing's job. Im still excited for it! :) I enjoyed the demo!

I'll be getting the game most probably.
The demo was amusing and the game mechanics worked well for me. Using the force really plays an important part in the game and makes it stand out from other titles coming out this season.
Also, the Euphoria engine really makes the game come alive.

But this is a big game with a lot of hype and Lucasarts have a lot riding on it.

The book would probably sell even more if it was a choose your own adventure. Ahhh, the halcyon days of keeping your thumb on the page so you could flip back and avert a horrible death. I am the Highlander of choose your own adventure.

This game is going to be amazing.
Most games rated high by mags and blogs end up being fucking retarded.
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 got high scores, but I'd rather get my dick chopped off then pay 60 bucks for something with less changes than a sport game.
Assassins Creed got extremely high numbers, but holy flaming-dog-poo was the game boring. Hell, I remember it getting higher numbers than shit that actually deserved nines.

What's wrong with a 7?
It seems like if a game isn't a 9 or 10 it's "doomed" to failure. What's up with that perception?

Here's the thing about reviews though... if you read that metacritic page and if you read through the three critiques already there you can figure out what you need to do in order to get the full fun out of the game.
I found the demo a little... funny... the Force powers are pretty hard to control and they didn't feel "right".
But it was gorgeous... and I also know that given enough time with the game the controls and gameplay that I found so strange in the demo will become second-nature. I just have to make sure that I concentrate on not using too much saber.

This isn't surprising. The story is approved by Lucas and takes place many years after Revenge of the Sith. It features The Apprentice AKA Starkiller is a disciple of Darth Vader. Princess Leia is in it. The Deathstar is nearly completed. SW fans are more interested in knowing about the SW they grew up on. Not the lameass Clone Wars. So of course this book is gonna sell.

I ve grown up loving Star Wars old and new.I ve played most of the big SW games in PC and now i am preparing for my first SW game for my XBox360.I loved the old trilogy and the new one as well.None of them is perfect but ...its Star Wars. That's enough for me.I love it though i have my objections in many things.
The demo is ok but i laughed when i ve encountered some absolutely stupid scripted events that were repeating forever even though the action was over.Of course this is a demo but surely the game has to be posished. It carries a heavy name and it must be top notch.

"A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defence, never for attack."
Something that everything since RotJ has thrown out the window to make the SW universe more palpable. I'm sure those lightning bolts shooting out of that guy's hands are just fireworks, right? And not electrocuting that Storm Trooper. Why is this one tenement of the SW universe always left aside? And don't give me any crap about how using it to "stun" enemies isn't attack- that's still offensive action.

Why do reviewers score low when a game doesn't have multiplayer? I could understand if it *did* have it, but it sucked. Otherwise that's like giving a bad review for a movie just because your favorite actor isn't in it. If the game itself isn't any fun to play, just say so. Don't justify your score based on something that's not even in the game.

By now, everyone who may have been interested in the game has probably played the demo and decided whether they are going to purchase the game or not.
Personally, I won't.I found the demo quite underwhelming: it played like yet-another-action-game with nothing special going for it. Not bad, but nothing to get too excited about unless you love Star Wars and the idea of playing as a Jedi.
Of course, the full game could have superior level design and boss fights to shame God Of War, but somehow I doubt it.
The game will certainly be OK, but "OK" just isn't good enough in a season with so many huge releases. I can't see myself spending 60+ euros on The Force Unleashed when LittleBigPlanet, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge and others are on the way.

@Sardu:
Seriously...
I remember when multiplayer was a "bonus", now it's a necessity.
It's to the point where if there isn't multiplayer in a game it's scored lower, as though without it it's somehow the lesser. As though without multiplayer the gameplay is that much more inferior.
I'm sick and tired of multiplayer being rammed down my throat. Part of the reason I play games is so that I can get away from other people. If I want to play with others around then I'll play an MMO, but stop devoting 40% of the developement time of a game to multiplayer! It should be an afterthought!

I don't know why people are complaining, I thought the demo was pretty neat. It definitely brought back the fun feeling that Jedi Knight had to it. The only disappointing bit was that I could slice through droids, AT-ST's, and random objects with my lightsaber like a hot knife through butter, but apparently Storm Troopers and Rebel Infantry are wearing some sort of anti-lightsaber armor which means I just wail on them with it for a bit and they fall over.....all undiced. Boo.

I bought the book.
Why?
The book is canon.
Otherwise, I would've ignored it. It was poorly written and the story was about as compelling as flossing. Or butt flossing, which is just gross. But I suppose more compelling. I'm gonna stick with regular flossing as a comparison.
But seriously, I don't think i'll buy the game unless the reviews are wild. I wasn't that interested in this type of gameplay to begin with, and the book surely hasn't convinced me to reconsider. (zomg, you get to fight and use teh forces!)
W/e. I just wanted to know a little more about what happened between ep 3 and 4. Now that I know, I can get back to the good books in the Expanded Universe.

@kitsuneconundrum: Not trying to call you out, but I was half hoping for that response so I could offer some history, though I'd much rather not want to. I'd rather that everyone else would call out this totally not Jedi BS. Anyway, this is for everyone.
I'm going to assume you're all familiar with some of the basic tenements of Buddhism, in this case particularly the "don't kill other living things." Nowadays people toss that aside like Christians everything in the Bible (unless it fits their means), but it's very important for my next point. During the Nara era of Japanese history, lots and lots of buddhist temples fought each other, killing thousands. Though they might have stood by the "do not kill other living things" concept (they didn't either that), they were able to justify their killings by posing the question: If you stop someone else from doing something bad (like killing you), aren't you in fact doing them good? Which would then allow the buddhists to go off and kill pretty much whoever they wanted to. It's that kind of "I'll stop him before he can get to me" kinda thing that the American Führer used to justify the current war, and it's the same that a ton of people have used throughout time immemorial. It is a form of attack, not of defense. Even if the Jedi use it (besides, they shouldn't be killing people anyway for any reason, which is why they fought robots in the first two prequels movies and "soul-less" clones in the third), to do such a thing doesn't offer the attacking party a chance to reform and surrender. And the pre-emptive thing? Philip K. Dick's Minority Report (they also made a movie with one of my favorite actors, Max von Sydow, though he was upstaged by some asshat).
Picking up Stormies and throwing them across the room? How is that not being a dick? I mean, that's like Superman level dickery. [www.superdickery.com]

As for the demo, I'm still in limbo between whether or not to get the game. The demo was a bit fun, but I feel like it will get easily repetitive. And if the story in the book was poorly written, that kills me hopes for an engaging in-game story.

I thought the demo sucked a multitude of balls. Sure, throwing crap/stormtroopers at stormtroopers/crap is fun (although horribly unintuitive), but that's about it. Combat felt flawed beyond comparison and since you don't really do anything other than fighting in the demo... Yeah. Balls.

The demo felt very hackneyed. The flow to the combat was erratic and the force powers were hit and miss. The general lack of fluidity made it a pain. Perhaps the game employs advanced physics and what-not but beyond some admittedly fun environmental effects, the soldiers seem to employ quite standard ragdoll mechanics.

Uh, just to point out, the NYT best-seller list is a joke and a half. Here's the scoop, they put books on the list before they're even released to the public. The list consists largely of titles the NYT either thinks will be or wants to be best sellers.

I played the demo too, it's actually fun, it just needed a boss fight imo. The meta-critic scored it a 8.2, and the other game magazine gave it an average 7. Game reviews are over rated. Throwing random pieces of junk at storm troopers are always fun.
It wasn't as nearly as bad as the Iron Man Demo, I didn't know what the hell I was doing, and flying off, landing. The controls for that game is not intuitive.

I played the demo like everybody else and if it's any indication it's just like a movie with ONLY bells and whistle.
the actual force power are only used for destruction, it never tries to be creative with gameplay. For example, instead of using the force to destroy the Walker, you have a Quick-Time-Event thing. That's just dumb. It would have been so nice if they actually bothered to put the force to some strategic use.
As it stands it's just an original way to kill stormtroopers and blow stuff up. Gets old real fast.

@CapnHulk: Because people in general don't have time to play mediocre games. Why play a 7 when you can play a 10? I don't mean scores by "reviewers" who just pump out a number right after the release date. I'm talking about player reviews, or reviews written by people who've actually finished the game. That's why I generally wait a bit for player feedback, as I find them more useful than the ones done by "professionals". Better to do that so you don't waste your time or money.

@denki: Regardless of your knowledge of history, you ignore the simple fact that the quote is "A *Jedi* uses the force for knowledge and defense. Never for attack."
Last I checked, Vader, The Emperor, and yes, even The Apprentice are NOT Jedi. Jedi is a name given to a force user who follows the light side. A Sith follows the dark side of the force, and tends to ignore the rules in place for Jedi.

Force unleashed fails because the HD is trying to get characters to Animate believably and control flawlessly at the same time.
Even with advanced blending animations, it's still going to take decades of work to make it look and feel appropriately.
it's just sad.
Force Unleashed looks gorgeous, but had the HD visuals, shaders and animations been canned and their focus entirely placed on engaging combat you'd have another fantastic god of war esque brawler on your hands instead of what you get now.
Why can't someone release an incredibly powerful 480p console designed to allow developers to create better gameplay instead of realistic visuals?

@Gouki146: Really? I have an ex that worked at national book chain. She would tell horror stories about customers coming in and demanding a book from the NYT best seller list. They were usually irate at not being able to find it on the one of the displays of end-caps. When my ex would go track down the book, it was always days from release. Maybe, they base their numbers on copies sold to distributors or actual stores, but I can't see how they can base it on sales to the public if the book hasn't even been released yet.
