Grand Theft Auto For Wii? Take-Two Says...
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on September 5, 2008
With Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars coming to the Nintendo DS exclusively, does that pave the way for a Wii release? After all, the Wii is the best selling console in North America right now and Take-Two and Rockstar Games don't shy away from bringing mature content — Manhunt 2 and Bully, for example — to the little white wonder. And Grand Theft Auto IV is making Take-Two big bucks. Sounds like a profitable relationship on par with the perfection of chocolate and peanut butter.
Take-Two CEO Ben Feder was asked that very question during today's quarterly earnings conference call to which he responded that Chinatown Wars was an important step in its relationship with Nintendo.
"Without commenting specifically on whether GTA is coming to the Wii or not, I will say that Nintendo and Take-Two work very very well together", Feder explained. "Rockstar and Nintendo work very well together. We intend to continue to grow that relationship."
Feder also noted that the company has invested "an enormous amount of time and effort working with Nintendo" and while he fell short of announcing a major product during an investor call, it certainly sounds like the door is open.
With over two million Carnival Games shipped on Nintendo platforms, it just makes sense.
While Rockstar has traditionally stuck with PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms, it has brought Smugglers Run to the Gamecube and Grand Theft Auto to the Game Boy Advance. We'd say think that, given the hooker beating simulating properties of the Wii nunchuk, it's a no-brainer.

The article itself already talks about how Take Two already brough Manhunt to the Wii, not to mention all the other titles like Resident Evil 4, Umbrella Chronicles, House of the Dead 2 and 3, No More Heroes, Obscure Aftermath, Mortal Kombat Armagedon, etc. Nintendo doesn't neccessarily make any M rated titles themselves, but that doesn't mean they've never allowed them.

Considering Nintendo's history with tossing the Mario universe into alternate games, can't you see it? Grand Theft Auto: Mario.
Think of the possibilites. Mario sniping Yoshi from the top of the castle, Luigi picking up Princess Toadstool on his motorcycle for a "ride" around the mushroom kingdom; Bowser tossing grenades at you while tossing over cars.
This is a money maker. Trust me.

Not really :\ Why does two million copies of a casual minigame compilation title = big sales for Grand Theft Auto? I'm sure less than 5% of the people who bought Carnival Games would pick up a Grand Theft Auto title. If anything, the success of Carnival Games is supporting their shyness of M-rated titles on Wii.

And you know, 2,000,000 isn't really that significant compared to the Wii's overall install base of over 22 million install base, most of whom I'll wager you are actually long-term Nintendo patrons.

There is a good amount of potential in the Wii for a GTA game. The Godfather on the Wii had excellent combat controls (other than the gun aiming needing a bit of work) that would work well in a GTA game - due to the similarities in the gameplay style.

GTA on wii seems like a dumb iea considering that they probably couldn't do anything like GTA IV, but that game would probably sell a ton. The sort of watered down version of Guitar Hero III on Wii sold better than the 360/PS3 versions, so I can see a watered down GTA selling just fine on the Wii.

I am a Wii owner if a Wii GTA turned out to be a quality affair, I would probably buy it.
Nintendo may not make Mature games, but they certainly have no qualms with them being on their systems.
Lets see: NES - Death Race, SNES - Mortal Kombat, N64 - Conker's Bad Fur Day, GCN - Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Wii - MadWorld
There are many more. Yes Nintendo has tended to have less M-Rated games in this and the previous generation. But that can be attributed to a attempt to go mainstream by introducing more casual games.
Also, let's not forget that the Wii has a much greater install base than the other two systems. This means that the percentage of mature gamers is going to be somewhat higher than the GCN.

Ya know, ever since the issues with SNES Mortal Kombat, Nintendo has really pulled back on censoring other companies' games.
Take Conker's Bad Fur Day as an example. The N64 original is LESS censored than the Xbox remake, Conker: Live & Reloaded.
No More Heroes is quite bloody and very vulgar (they drop the F-bomb numerous times, for example).
So, before you go around spewing this "lol Nintendo = censorship!" sewage, pay attention to the facts, will ya?

First- I Resident Evil 4...was a complete port of the Game cube and ps2 version. nothing new.Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles got like a 75 on average, House of the Dead 2 and 3 got like a 66, btw which was another port. Fun thing is! they both looked the same! No More Heroes was actually not to bad, although it got repetitive. not saying it wasn't fun to play.
To sum up. None of there "M" rated games are original or that great.
Second- Fact: Nintendo doesnt make M rated games.
also didn't say they didn't allow them. I said that they at one point said that they wanted to appeal to families.

@Cmdr.Trehugr: So did you actually play those games? I agree, Manhunt looked shit so I didn't buy it, but I haven't played it, so I can't say that for sure...
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is imo a good game (especially if you are a Resident Evil fan). I'd give it a solid 8/10 (slightly above that average review score). Unfortunately, it's still not nearly as good as a real Resident Evil game, and I think that clouded the reviews.
As for RE4 being a port of the GCN version uh... yes... I think we know that. But 'nothing new' is a complete lie - sure the developers spent about ten minutes making it, but just adding Wiimote control instantly made the game much better (and it was already awesome). Like I've said several times, after playing that I completely realised that I never want to play another RE game with analogue stick. (That said, I may suck it up and get RE5 for PS3 or something if they don't show any signs of making a proper RE Wii game...)
@story: I'd be interested in a GTA game for Wii (Godfather was pretty good so how about the original - especially if it includes the cynical humour etc). Have to admit though that the thing that really attracts me to the PS3/60 GTA4 is the graphics - not necessarily as technically impressive as some other games, but in terms of replicating a fictional version of a real place, still pretty stunning, imo.
(Now if they put a low-poly, low-texture but big, well-lit, whatever version of London in a Wii GTA? I am so there. Doubt it though.)

Of course the Wii could handle GTA. Come on guys lets be objective here. Are you forgetting how great Vice City and San Andreas were on the PS2? As we saw through multi platform games, the GC was siginificantly more powerful than the PS2 and the Wii more powerful than the GC. If GTA was built from the ground up for the Wii then it could look considerably better than anything we saw from the last generation.
