Mega Man 9 - Winging It
Posted by AJ Glasser at 11:20 AM on September 5, 2008
I'll tell you a secret: I got kicked out of arts and crafts in fourth grade. I was too busy beating up flirting with Patrick McHellen to pay attention to stuff like glue sticks and foldable tabs.
But if I hadn't gotten booted, maybe I would've been able to make this...

Look like this:

That right there is a papercraft version of the new Wing controller for the Wii, made by Nyko. Normally, I wouldn't blog about third-party controllers - but I was lured to this press event by the residual guilt I feel at being cast out of arts and crafts all those years ago, and by the promise of hands-on with Mega Man 9.
Well, Nyko delivered. I got my time with Mega Man 9, although it was the same build Capcom demoed at E3 (where they were caught on live feed by IGN, epically failing at their own game, apparently). And I also got to try out their new controller - which syncs with your Wii mote to take the place of that itsy-bitsy Classic Controller.
I wasn't too impressed with Mega Man 9 - but that's just because I hate dying over and over again until I learn something. As evidenced by getting kicked out of arts and crafts, I hate learning.
But I do dig the retro graphics and I'm really looking forward to the evil robot chick. It's about time Mega Man had some gender equality in the villain lineup. According to Capcom PR dude Tim Ng, there were going to be two female robot villains - but the second girl was scrapped because the developers didn't want fans to feel like the series was changing too much. (Oooh, scary! Two grils!)
Something that needed to change, though, was that Classic Controller. It's just too damned retro. We didn't like the SNES controllers all that much to begin with (which is why they evolved into N64 controllers), so why shove a throwback down our throats when we want to play retro games?
The Wing is out this October and look for Mega Man 9 this month.

To even put that piece of shit controller, with it's disgusting segmented d-pad, in the same league as the SNES controller is blasphemy.

@excel_excel:
Analogue sticks are good and fine, but the button layout and overall setup of the thing made it confusing and hard to use. It's not very easy to use the L and Z buttons in the same game. Those yellow directional buttons were dumb too.
Now that I think of it, the analogue sticks on the N64 controller were garbage. They broke very easily and became limp and useless.
I'm pretty sure I would stick with my reliable SNES controller, if I had a choice.

I loved the SNES controller. I don't think the transition from that one to the N64 controller had anything to do with consumer feedback. I think it was the evolution of gaming that made Nintendo design that. The need for an analog stick for instnace, and for more buttons.
Everyone I knew loved the SNES controller. The NES one on the other hand? Well it's nostalgic, but the sharp edges were a bitch on your palms.

That's what kills the PlayStation controllers for me. The crap D-Pad. Also with the move from the regular PS controller to the DualShock, they really should've moved the left analog into them main position where the D-Pad still resides. It's akward to use the left analog, which is now the main control on that side of the device, in the secondary position... I love my Wavebird, the 360 pad comes in a close second.

The Classic controller didn't/doesn't need to change because it is like the SNES controller - but rather because it isn't. The SNES controller is one of (if not the) most comfortable non-analog-stick controllers to date (and still has a better D-Pad than any Dualshock controller). The N64 controller was garbage in the eyes of many, so saying the SNES controller evolved into it is very, very wrong.
As for the wing controller - looks pretty cool. Certainly better than the Classic Controller. >_< I just wish Nintendo would update the dame Wii firmware so you could re-map the buttons for Virtual Console games. :(

I didn't hate the N64 controller, but many do for obvious reasons.
The layout was terrible. The left side's existence was completely pointless as a player would have their left hand sitting on the middle grip constantly. The D-pad existed for the hell of Nintendo systems having a D-pad and the L-trigger was always mapped to the same control as the R-trigger because, let's face it, you couldn't reach the sucker anyway.
The SNES control had absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Hell. Look at how many people would love to take those Japanese-exclusive SNES Wii controls off of their owners' hands.
The only problem with the Classic Control is that it isn't enough like the SNES pad.

AJ with the snes controller comment you have, in one fell swoop:
1. Shown that you are not in touch with the gaming community at all.... ALL MODERN GAMING CONTROLPADS ARE A DIRECT COPY OF THE SNES CONTROLLER. It is, without question, the most popular controller design of all time.
2. Completely lost any credibility by saying the classic controller is just like the snes one. For one thing the classic is too big, which makes it feel akward, and the button placement is slightly off.
3. Completely lost any wieght as any kind of critic by saying you prefer the n64 controller. Mind you I'm not one of the mindless drones that hated it, but the snes was still a better controller.

I don't like the rest of this review because it didn't convey what I wanted to know. Honestly, what I would like to have seen was some reviewing on the feel of the buttons and d-pad on this 3rd party controller. I find that my usual complaint is that they stick slightly, no matter what the brand. And how was the wireless? The thing that really sucks about the Classic Controller is that it is wired. (and strangely wired at that...crotch flossing ftl...) If they made it wireless and still managed to keep it at the $20 mark, I'd be a very happy girl

Your Rockmans with with their platforms and shooting were far off in the atomic push-button world of tomorrow. That's World's Fair stuff, son. That's Tomorrowland.

@Protector one: i can't google one of my ex-bfs, even though he practically lives on the 'net and has a unique name. it is still possible, in this day and age.
i'm not getting the hate. do you guys do this to the male newbies? i haven't had a problem with AJ, she seems to know what she's about; i liked her plebian PAX coverage. the "we" angle is slightly baffling, but she is certainly entitled to her opinion.

Ummm....how was the controller? Comfortable? Responsive? Is the d-pad decent? THESE are questions I need answers for!

Actually I'm of the opinion the SNES was the best control pad evar.

I didn't find that the classic controller was itsy-bitsy; actually, I would have rather had the option to buy that awesome SNES-lookin' Wii pad....
Are sales of the Wii Classic controller still on hiatus?

@Knoxximus (360/PSN): Finally a comment asking the real questions. Why did the post not address that simple question about how good a controller this is with any real details?

Because she hates learning, which is painfully obvious by this half hearted, lazy post.

@vid3oman64:
Yeah I hate the order on xbox, I still got SNES glued in my mind....because it's the best controller design ever. I still don't believe he said "we", when he's probably in the 3% that don't like it much.
Dual shock would be so much better if the D-Pad was like SNES or, totally nothing analog about it. I always used a dual shock 1 gamepad to play street fighter, because the damn dual shock 2 has "analog" D-pad , what a dumb idea, really dumb.
Gamecube was the worst idea ever. "hey we got the buttons right last 2 generations, now let's make it awkward and fuckin useless with no improvement what ever with a BIG A button for stupid morons that can't see well and look at the gamepad when playing a game...oh and let's put X and Y not like SNES just to play with minds of longtime fans. GREAT, no one can press Y and B at same time, we are so cool"

@teraphony:
See, if AJ had written like Teraphony, there wouldn't be this dumb stereotype about females in gaming.
Actually, the more and more I read this article, the more I dislike it. Not just the opinion issue either. There just doesn't seem to be a cohesive point to it.
It tries to be about Megaman, the Wing control, and the problems of the Classic control, but doesn't succeed at addressing any of them specifically. Just sort of glances over them.
That and this line:
"so why shove a throwback down our throats when we want to play retro games?"
Aren't retro games all about throwbacks? Isn't that the entire point?
Slightly contradictory. A big part of retro games is playing how you played in the first place. Why do you think Inafune isn't decking out Megaman 9 with all sorts of new controls.

@GodKiller0:
Example of the Gamecube split.
The Gamecube controller was an ergonomic improvement over the SNES button layout. It wasn't about layout or looking at the control. It was about feel.
Four identically feeling buttons can take some getting used to, or even cause confusion for some.
The distinctive shapes of the X, Y, A, and B buttons on the Gamecube control remedied this. If the games didn't require you to press Y and B at the same time, what's the issue?

I'm kind of annoyed that I was drawn into this article by my interest in MM9, only to find out it was about the papercraft controller, and not really anything new about the game... like we had to be subjected to the same marketing ploy you did: (you want mega man 9...? check out our controller!)
I understand kotaku has been putting more of the actual news after the jump so they can better track what articles are of interest to readers, but they usually state what the actual article is about before the jump. Which I find useful so I can decide if its something I want to spend time reading or not... But this one had a pic of MM9, didnt tell me what it was about straight up, which was okay... But I read the whole thing and not only does it not give any new info on the game, but it didn't actually give any impressions of the controller, which was what the story was actually supposed to be about..!
I'm all for humor (after all its one of kotaku's many virtues), and don't mean to sound like a humbug.. but I felt a little cheated by this article. Yes, it's probably not the number one thing you wanna report about, and you want to inject some fun into the article, get some hits on the article, but not at the expense of substance...
I also have to say that I really didnt get much out of any PAX reporting, which may be simply that there wasnt much to report, or that I'm getting a little fatigued with reading about games... but there is something to be said about being straightforward and succinct... which I myself am not good at.. but I read most everything Crecente posts, in full or if not I am able to get an idea of what an article is about pretty quick so I can continue reading or move on.
Anyway, just my two cents.
