Raptr - Social Gaming Network Enters Public Beta
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 1:00 PM on September 5, 2008
Sometimes Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Orkut and OpenSocial just aren't enough. Too much real world stuff, not enough gamerscore bragging.
Enter Raptr - a new social network for gamers founded by Dennis 'Thresh' Fong (he had to do something with all that prize money) that offers a way of tracking your friends and sharing what you are in to on several popular games networks.
Once you have signed in and chosen a nick, you can enter your IDs on Xbox Live, PSN, World of Warcraft, Steam and others, then start entering the games in your collection.
Where it can, Raptr will pull data from your various networks and update your profile with a list of your current games, achievements and the like. There are plugins for displaying your data on Facebook et al too, of course.
A free client for PC or Mac will display and update data from you and your friends in real time as well as suck data from any games you play on your box — less of an issue for most Mac geeks, presumably.

At this point I think I can name somewhere between 50 and 100 different social networks off the top of my head. And they're all for such specific purposes... I want to see how this evolves over the next few years. There's too many.

Is it bad that I read this as "Rapture?" before Raptor? I thought it's name was making a point.

I deleted my myspace, never got facebook.
I might want this. It's really interesting but I don't know if the two ideas mesh (gaming and social w/out the gaming part...why do I care about some stranger's 'now playing' or achievements?)

You don't need to add myspace/facebook/twitter to your account, it's just an option

Uhhh...other than the facebook features and a few other things, why wouldn't I just use Steam?
It's got the ingame messaging, lets you know who's playing what, there's groups and profiles and all that jazz...
I guess between XBL, PSN, and Steam this would be useful...

Have we never heard of pwned.com?
Or the other hundred websites like this one?
Meh, I don't see why this one gets to grace Kotaku. =/

Gimmicky fad-ish name.
Anyway, there are lots of these out already: Steam, Xfire, Pwned.com, GreatGamesExperiment. I'd recommend Xfire for it's Steam-like qualities (in-game chat, voice chat, stat tracking, server favourites), though with a much larger support base for games.
The only thing going for this "Raptr" is Mac support, from which there aren't many games anyway.
So many social networks dilutes the concept of social networks in the first place.

@Bravepower: After a little nosing around, I found out that Raptr was created by the founder of Xfire. (Which has since been bought by Viacom. Hmm.) This has piqued my interest.

I tried this out, and I really like it. Think of it as the Pidgin IM of all Game Social Networks.
Its like all of em combined, its actually really cool.

@Smash88: Yeah, but Xfire doesn't really have the slick interface this does. I'm trying it out, it's worth at least looking at, it's free and whatnot.
Plus the standalone client is nice. For me...A mac user...

I think I'll stay with Xfire, and I'll also wait till PlayXpert works on Vista and 64-bit systems..

So it is Xfire meets MySpace, Think ill hold off, my clan already was featured on Xfire, and got more than enough attention. Although gathering info from XBL, PSN and Steam is a good idea.

Pass. 8 years on the internet and I've been a part of 7 social sites. I'm gonna stick to Facebook until the next 'social jump'. So unless 99% of my friends from high school/college make that jump too, then I'm not interested. I couldn't see why this couldn't have been a Facebook extension.

Dennis "Thresh" Phong? Of... Was that Quake 1 or 2 fame? I haven't heard that name in a few years now. Not since F4tal1ty hit the scene. Wasn't there another name that was side by side with Thresh? Hmm. Stupid hippie memory. Oh wells.

I played around for this trash for about 30 minutes before deleting it. Just my opinion, but it really doesn't have much to offer at this point. See for yourself.

Don't most games websites (Giant Bomb, GameSpot, 1Up, etc) have most the feautres presented here, except in a website you might be interested in instead of a myspace clone?

Xfire is a veteran in this category, and i like it enough to have no reason to change, not to mention is already has all my hours! =[]

It's apparently from a co-founder of Xfire so I guess it might do okay in the long run. Though you wouldn't know that from reading this piece.
