Traveller's Tales Resists Urge To Milk Lego Success
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on September 5, 2008
If a lesser developer had had the success with the Lego Star Wars series that Traveller's Tales did, we'd be buried up to our necks in bullshit by now. As much as I desire to see every major film property made into a Lego-based video game, I'm quite pleased that a more responsible company than I would run is handling the property. Speaking to Eurogamer, Lego Batman producer Rich Earl reaffirms the company's commitment to quality.
"There's an expectation now that there would be a LEGO game per year, and we certainly feel that one or two games would be the right amount per year, otherwise there'd be a saturation of LEGO games and they'd lose the charm...We're also conscious that we're making games for young kids. We don't want to take the piss out of the consumer and end up making any old rubbish. We're hoping people feel our games are of a high standard and we want to continue doing that".
Thank goodness I say. Games like Lego Caligula and Lego Schindler's List need to stay in my imagination, for the good of all mankind.

I think the best would be Lego Riddik. Guy walks up behind the target, grabs his head, and "pok!".

@Mike Fahey: You should try and pitch "Lego Caligula" and "Lego Schindler's List" to them and see how well it goes with their whole young kid demographic. :)

Whenever anybody mentions Traveller's Tales, all I can think of is Sonic 3D Blast. They've still got that weird logo, I see.

Now that New Line Cinema, owned by Warner, has the rights to Gears of War...I think the next step is obvious.
Venture into the dark underbelly of the Earth with LEGO Marcus Fenix and fight the Locusts swarm, resisting their destruction of humanity brick by brick.
LEGO Gears of War...coming soon.

Lego X-men or Marvel Heroes would be cool.
What about making a fighting game with "Lego Decapitation"?

I'm curious to what series Lego will do next. Probably something that is connected to other media like movies (i.e Indiana Jones and Batman).

Yeah, nothing says "We're not trying to take your money" like releasing Star Wars: Episodes 1-3, Star Wars: Episodes 4-6, and then combining them to release Star Wars: The Complete Saga.
Thanks for not "taking the piss" out of me.

Could they do a LEGO LoTR, or are the rights tied up in excessively nasty knots?

otherwise! otherwise!! LOL I was sick of the idea around the time the original Star Wars lego game came out ( that unlike the first three movies dint need the story to be told in a tolerable way ). Then the Lego Indy game was just like playing Star Wars hahah as a trooper...to much eye rolling. The charm is dead...unless playing as batman with a grapple hook is somehow something more then a new graphic skin on the same old thing.

I would really like to see a LEGO Marvel or Lego DC, the unique humor and gameplay would be awesome. Imagine the amount of unlockable characters, it would be incredible.
@drweazel: I agree, but they should add it as some DLC for the Complete Saga. It would be too short as a stand alone game.

Woah, a company who's not trying to beat a dead horse for money? This must be bizarro world, but on the plus side, this is a nice counterbalance to the article on LucasArts earlier, and their ruining of the Star Wars franchise with bad games.
Traveller's Tales gets a Gold star!

I simply cannot fathom the appeal of the Lego license - it's not like you are building things with virtual Lego blocks, it's just a horrible branded aesthetic.

Also, one or two games a year in a series isn't milking a series?
Do we accept this judgement for EA as well?

i love travellers tales. sonic 3d blast and sonic r probably shouldnt have been as good as i thought they were when i was a kid lol. but they did also make mickey mania, which i recently replayed and have to say is one of the best platform games out there.
but anyways.. lego flash or green lantern games would be cool, but batman is by far the coolest dc hero, so superhero wise, lego spiderman or x-men would be something id really be into. especially x-men. lastly, lego tiny toons, or lego looney tunes would be AWESOME.

@drweazel:
LEGO Batman is due out the 23rd (finally!), and it's been hinted that they're working on another Indiana Jones game (likely to include Crystal Skull coverage) and another Star Wars game (Clone Wars? EU?), but a lot of people are hoping they'll dip into the classic LEGO themes, like Space (if you can't play as Blacktron I, that possibility is dead to me), Castle, and Pirates.
@blizzardjesus:
Brendan Powell Smith? On what grounds would you sue him? If he didn't use the LEGO logo anywhere on the book (or if he did it with permission), he's clean on that end. The book he's basing his work on is _LOOOOONG_ out of copyright, so he's good there as well (except, perhaps, in the Vatican City).
@Nirolak:
They don't have the Superman or general DC licenses. Just Batman.
@nick.soapdish:
What is it with everyone thinking Warner Bros. has control over the LEGO video game industry? Just because they own TT Games and DC Comics doesn't mean they write the checks that cover development of the LEGO games. They don't. There's some privately-owned company over in Denmark that does that because they bought the rights to produce construction-block-themed games for Batman/Star Wars/Indiana Jones when they bought the rights to make toys based off of them. _They_ decide what gets made and what doesn't.
@demonknightinuyasha:
I would. TLC seems to be divorcing itself from that license. The last movie only got _one_ set (and it was a third Hogwarts, which retailed for around $100). I've yet to see word of any sets being released to tie in with the next movie...though part of that might be that the movie release got pushed back before they were prepared to announce the set(s).
@TheWP:
While LotR might be up for grabs, and HP is likely still active, Spiderman is right out. They only had the Spiderman _movie_ license through Sony. Marvel then sold the Marvel license to a clone brand, and somehow it killed the LEGO deal before the duration of the license was reportedly supposed to expire.
@LongDarkBlues:
I just added you to my Friends list...so I could delete you from it. Some of us _enjoy_ our casual combat puzzle games (that and I have to see if I can figure out how to build the Dagobah motorcycle someday).
