Far Cry 2 Collectors Edition Gives Us Wood
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:00 AM on September 6, 2008
Along with an official press release confirming the game's October 24th release in Europe, Ubisoft has announced the contents of the Far Cry 2 Collectors Edition, which takes the whole special CE box thing in a completely different direction. Rather than package it in a metal tin, as is all the rage these days, Ubi is shipping their Collectors Edition in a wooden box, perhaps so you can set it on fire and compare real life wood burning to the muchly-hyped in-game wood burning.
Along with the box you'll receive the game itself (thank goodness), a limited edition t-shirt in a size too small for me, an Art of Far Cry 2 book, a map, and the requisite making-of DVD. Note that nothing concrete has been announced for North America yet, but seeing as concrete would be far too heavy they'll probably go for wood here as well.
Ubisoft Confirms October 24th Release Date for Far Cry® 2 and Announces Collectors Editions Content
London, UK - September 05, 2008 - Today, Ubisoft announced that Far Cry® 2 will be released on October 24th throughout all EMEA territories on the 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows® PC.
"Far Cry® 2 is an amazing journey that will take you to the darkest places of Africa where each player will choose how they play. This will provide gamers with an unprecedented experience in the FPS genre". John Parkes, EMEA Marketing Director.
To celebrate the release of Far Cry® 2, Ubisoft is happy to unveil the Far Cry® 2 Collectors' Edition that will include:
- Exclusive wooden box
- Original Far Cry® 2 Game
- Limited edition Far Cry® 2 t-shirt
- "The Art of Far Cry® 2" Art book
- Collector 50km² map
- Making-of DVDFar Cry 2 Collectors' Edition is now available for pre-order at Game and www.game.co.uk

@3inst3in: and exclusive DLC for xbox which will add a good amount of lenght (They're words not mine.)
And yes, Fallout 3 C.E. seems to be the MUST HAVE C.E. this year, Bioshock was last year. :D Resistance 2 comes a close second though. I don't see any other AAA game coming out with a C.E. that rivals the quirkiness and charm of the Fallout 3 one.

The map editor will make it epic for online play. Anybody remember Warcraft3 The mapeditor made that game amazing.

@WEGGLES90: Man I feel like an idiot for buying the Legendary edition. I still see leftover legendary editions selling for less than the actual game because they take up too much room and they need to get rid of them. And I'm not even a huge Halo fan....

I am with you Mike, please do not include T-Shirts with special editions. They are always:
- Too small
- Irreplacable
I still regret wearing my beloved Street Fighter Alpha shirt. It now lies in the "incubator" drawer awaiting the technology to regrow the cotton and remove the yellowing.
But otherwise this sounds awesome. Looks like I may have to import if this is just for Europe. Hooray for region free stuff ; )

You mean you dont think a faux map of a faux area of the world or a small scale plastic model of a imaginary cyborg super soldier is display worthy?!?!?! BURN HIM! BURN HIM NOW!

@xAnarChisTx: Honestly, they are a lot better now than they used to be. You used to get a DVD. That's it. Maybe tin packaging. But a DVD filled with talking. Talking about the game you already played. Woohoo.
Now you get helmet replicas, DVD's AND CD's, and T-shirts. Oh, and wood. It's a fucking step up.

@Modus_Operandi: Being the type of guy that saves none of his game packaging (I keep only the discs and the manuals in a binder), these collecter's editions are very unappealing to me for just that reason. What am I supposed to do with all that extra stuff? It's certainly not display worthy.

@squishyfishy: Well it does have some elements (although not all of them are original) that can affect usually straightforward FPS gameplay:
Day/Night cycle
Weather system
Player injury
Weapon degradation
Come on, where's the love for Ubi?! :)

CE's always sound good on paper but what happens after the new game sheen wears off is you realizing you spent $10 to a box that takes up double the space on your already cluttered shelf.

Collectors Edition games are turning into shit. Yeah, there are a couple of games worth getting the CE for, but most of the time, the only reason why somebody buys this junk is so they can brag about it.

Excellent. Yet another faceless FPS for gun-nuts to froth over.
I seriously hope that next-gen, games become an experience. I want an adventure that's so much more than awkwardly pressing buttons.
But for now... I guess we're stuck with more bang bang bleed bleed.

Sure doesn't help my lack of confidence with this game after playing it for a while at PAX over the weekend.
-Crappy AI? Check
-Collectathons? Check
-Questionable story progression? Check
-"Immersive" features that happen way too often, make no sense, and end up being more annoying than anything? Check
Definitely waiting not just on reviews, but player comments too on this one. It's made by the same developer as Assassin's Creed, and so far it looks like it'll be adopting all of that game's problems too. Beautiful, competent technology with an at-best average game built on top of it.
