The Dishwasher Creator Reviews The Dishwasher
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on September 6, 2008
Sometimes the harshest critics of a game are the creators themselves. Just ask Jame's Silva, following Peter Molyneux's lead and reviewing his own creation. While McWhertor called the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai "Sexy, Stylish 2D Action", Silva's own opinion of his creation differs slightly.
The graphics in The Dishwasher are 2D. In this day and age, this is completely inexcusable: not only are 2D graphics completely inadequate at capturing our imaginations, but 2D-by definition-is not HD. Playing a standard definition game on next-gen hardware hooked up to a monstrous plasma display just seems wasteful-much like that game's treatment of environmentally-friendly messages.
Silva's biggest disappointment is the same as my own - this is not a dating sim. What the hell was he thinking? Whatever it was, he earned every point of the final 1 out of 10 score.

Funny how people fail to have the thought process "why would he review his own game poorly?" and then make the leap to "hm, must be satire."

I was not aware that the article was satirical, I was simply breezing through my favorite site, caught mention of a xbla game I played and was excited for. And it seemed as though it was being slightly panned by its own creator. Sorry, I took the time to defend a genre I think still has viable place in this game era. Now do me a favor smoke a joint, and fuckin' chill.

@Saliu: Did you read the article?
It's painfully obvious, but anyway. It's the creator itself reviewing his own game. The whole time he's docking it points for absurdities, like having the character wear no manskirts, or that the "dishwasher" doesn't actually wash dishes.
More extremely, he complains that the game is not a carbon-neutral dating sim (it's actually a side scrolling beat 'em up). The whole 2D/3D thing is obviously part of this.

This game is by far one of the best I've played on XBLA (others being Braid, BC:Rearmed). The controls were spot on and lot of fun, finishers were stylish enough to want to do them again and again. Maybe it's me but there is something about tossing someone into the air and then repeatedly kicking them against the wall that is intensely satisfying. I can only hope in the finished version that there will be more finishers, crazier enemies and an arsenal of weapons to put a real hurt on everything.

"2D-by definition-is not HD" That's just BS.
I could arguably say that "3D-by definition is for those who are incapable of creating art and have to resort to computer sofware to mimic arts"

using a computer software to create a scenery is NOT the same as drawing a scenery

While I agree with what he's saying, I still think 2D can be beautiful. And if done correctly, can be an artful and respectful throwback to the early years. And from the little I played of The Dishwasher I can say quite easily,"Well done." Here's hoping that this guy is granted more power to do what he really wants. Support this game, don't let HD kill 2D. This coming from big screen owner/graphics whore.

The 2D HD comment got me thinking (yes I realised the sarcasm), that 3D games have a lot to make up for in comparison to the bygone days of 2D. People have put their obsessive compulsive hearts in to 2D sprites. With 3D the texturing requires skill sure, but once it's done it's done, a sprite requires effort in every frame, and produces a character designed to look artistic and awesome in every position. Team Fortress 2 is the only game that comes to mind where I've fallen in love with the visual character design in the 3D world. Other than that the only people willing to go to extreme lengths for visuals are those catering to kids.
Some people may view Master Chief, Lara Croft or Max Payne as iconic character designs. But is that really the best 3D modellers and texture artists can come up with? Realism is a good thing to a small extent, after that you are still making a game where a character doesn't die from a headshot, where plasma can be fired like bullets and other things that depart from reality. So the game designers should stop kidding themselves and be more artistic.
I've seen so much concept art that has looked so much better than the final product to be singing praises of the normalcy game designers give us gamers.
Oh and publicly self-reviewing like this should always be humourous, any serious introspection could never be frank or truthful if the audience included the public.

2D is not HD because there's a 2 instead of an H in front of the D. That's the entirety of his point right there. (By this logic, 3D is not HD, either)

You know last-gen games might not be Hi-def or built with HD in mind, but I think those older games still benefit greatly on HD TV's. Case in point I baught a couple PS2 games back in the day because they looked incredible playing on the Hi-Def screen in store. Took them home to my standard TV, and was shocked at the difference.

Oh come on, 2d isn't dead. BC:Rearmed looks pretty HD, so does Braid. I don't think 2d will ever die as long as it's possible. Well, except when we're on the PS10 that crawls into your brain and you experience everything real time from your own perspective. But by then games will be so expensive that there will only be 3-4 games released per year, one for each of the remaining mega-publishers that roam the country, plucking up any developer they can find and hooking their brains up to a render farm.
