The Many Faces of Fable 2
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:00 AM on September 6, 2008
The characters of Fable 2 are meant to be a reflection of the person playing them, to a point. The choices you make as you grow from childhood to adulthood in the game will change your character's appearance. But, your character is highly customisable. Lionhead Studios says they have tons more clothing to wear (all of which can be dyed), you can put on make-up, jewelry, change hairstyles, add facial hair. You can also morph your base appearance by tinkering with strength, how fat your character is, their skin type. The end result, Lionhead says, is billions of different characters.

This is the game that will finally convince me to get xbox live gold. (at least... that's what I keep telling my friends so they actually get the game so I have someone to co-op with if I DO get xbox live gold)
Also, I don't like the new screen shot viewer. all the pics are small, can't see any details.

Anyway, this game continues to impress me. Will definitely pick it up.

Even though the first game was overhyped I still found it very enjoyable and if Fable 2 improves on that then I'd be content. I'm not looking for some life changing experience or some genre redefining gameplay; while those things would be awesome, I liked the original and I'd be happy with an improved version of the previous game.

Man, I really can't wait for Fable 2.
My fiance watched me play through the whole first game, I'm pretty excited that she can easily join in with me in co-op this time around (and that she can have a female character, as this was one of her major complaints with the first one).

The more I see of this game as time progresses, it looks better and better. At first the thought of 1 button combat soured me on the idea of playing this game, but then I went back and played Fable 1 and realized that it was necessary to make a more dynamic and accessible game. Then I was harping on the graphics, but then after playing the first game and comparing the two, the quality increase leaped out to me. The subtle improvements are immediately necessary (kind of like between Halo 2 and 3) but when you scrutinize the graphics, the art style stayed so true to the first game that it's all you see. I hope they follow through with the character stuff. I didn't really feel like my character was unique to me. Also it didn't help that on my second playthrough, I used the Arena/Hero Save exploit. I hope there isn't a similar exploit here.

I was no large fan of the original Fable, but the allure of co-op has caused me to blindly follow the siren's call of the hype train. Every game is made better with co-op, and this one just seems more tailor made to it to begin with. Count me in.

Pssh yeah, sure, the first one had tons of customization, too. The problem was that the tattoos, accessories, and even hair styles had in-game effects. So sure, you could look like anything you wanted, as long as you were content to be gimped.
In practice, your stylistic choices were the result of gameplay decisions, not aesthetics. It's an unfortunate example of two seemingly good design decisions becoming disastrous when paired together.

@Bishmon: Whoah, this has local drop-in co-op? Suddenly Fable II has gone from "check demos and reviews" to "day one purchase" for me. Now that we've beaten Castle Crashers, my bro and I are totally jonesing for our next co-op action game fix.
On a related note, it's just bewildering to me that SEGA would take an old co-op beat-em-up series and try to turn it into some kind of grand single player campaign. Why do so many developers forsake local co-op? I guarantee local co-op was one of the BIGGEST factors in the success of the first Halo, and it certainly doesn't seem to have hurt the sales of Gears of War.

I cannot wait to get this game and use the items I unlocked in the pub games. I think that idea (as a preorder bonus only) was genius and people are not giving Lionhead/Microsoft enough credit. I am also anxious to try out the web games to unlock some more cool stuff for my character :D

I am looking forward to this for sure. But I have to say I am troubled by some recent game play vids I have seen on IGN. The character animation is horrible. The stiff standing characters that switch into run animations with no transitional animation, and the feet don't seem to move on the ground at the rate of speed you are moving. It just all looked jerky. To me next gen games should focus on smooth animation in characters. It just feels so much more lifelike. I know this is an RPG type game but I think they could move on from the 4 frames of animation for a walk cycle to a run position. I'm sure I can get over it though, it just surprised me to see that.

If I only had one character to choose from I wouldn't think "I wish I could look like someone else in this game". It's a superficial thing that in my opinion doesn't add to the game at all. To any game at all. Unless it's a bad one that has nothing else going for it. Fable 2 should be better than that. Should be... [crosses fingers]

Here's all I want to know.... can I change my appearance without defeating the point of the game?
I love Fable one, I've even replayed the whole thing a few times, but no matter how much I want to "try things different," my final character always looks basically the same.
To be attractive, you need certain clothes, haircuts and tattoos.
To be well defended, you need a certain armor.
To be good or evil you just pick the properly aligned version of either.
The end result: you always look the same, either tinted gold/white or black/purple.
To top it off, your character aged decades in a matter of hours (despite the "in-game" days only passing in the dozens), so by the time I reach the half-way point my hair is white and face wrinkled.
