'Debunking the Stereotypical Gamer Profile'
Posted by Maggie Greene at 3:00 AM on September 7, 2008
Via Terra Nova comes word that a new series of academic articles centered around Everquest II has just kicked off, starting with an article on 'who plays, how much, and why' (with a couple of 'oddball' gems scattered throughout the data). The results weren't always what researchers — or the general public — would expect. While there have been other studies done in MMOs, this group was the first that took place in the game engine had the full cooperation of a company like SOE. What are they going to be looking at over the course of the study?:
Are these findings representative of all virtual worlds, or all MMOs, or all fantasy titles? I have my own speculations (pretty solid for fantasy diku games), and I welcome yours. Of course, until other developers open their doors in a similar fashion, it'll all remain speculation.
What can you expect from future reports? Our subsequent papers will involve research on gender differences, role players, economic modelling, social networks, group success and failure, raiding, detailed player behaviour metrics, trust and community, and many others currently in the hopper. As we develop more and more metrics from the player behaviour data, we will be merging these with the psychological, demographic, and attitude data from the survey. In other words, for the first time we will know who they are, what they think, and what they do on a truly systematic level.
The article itself is a quick read, and the data is condensed in charts if you're too lazy to read the full article. I'm looking forward to 'future installments' — what other oddball stats will crop up?

There is a stereotypical gamer. Trust me, I've met them.
They're a minority, but they exist.

There is no such thing as a stereotypical gamer.
I am.... 40 years old..... female..... lesbian.... all but legally married (one day justice and equality will prevail.)
Favorite genre.... shooters (my motto is no gun = no fun) I HAVE shot guns in real life but am no gun fanatic. I don't even own a real gun, but prefer the strategy and gameplay of shooters over most other types of games.
I've played casually and I've played competitively.
I own 2 360's a PS3 and a Wii. I have three hdtv's and two surround sound systems.
I game, mostly shooters, with A LOT of women and A LOT of people over 30.

This work sounds all fine and such, but there's just something strange about how they acquired their sampling data.
I suppose enticing people to take your survey is a problem for the majority of surveys. Not only do you have to attract a particular base of people, but you have to ensure it does not comprise the measurement aims of the survey.
In other words, the paper throughly establishes the attractiveness of the item they rewarded players with, but they did not give a through assessment of whether the enticement would draw gamers' sincere responses. For most gamers, these sorts of promotions are merely a means to an end, and because completion of the survey - rather than frank answers - was only needed to get the item, it would seem that the majority of subjects would simply attack the survey to complete it in the quickest time possible.
There's obviously no way to empirically record the validity of subjects' responses in this medium, so this is inherent to the survey with or without enticement. However, it does seem like the paper would benefit from conjecture as to how this sort of thinking skewed results.

@Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc: Comment of the week, I say. Gave me a good chuckle.
I always considered myself a stereotypical gamer, but from what I'm reading I guess I somehow fall into the "casual" pool.
I liken most gamers to be equivalent to most readers. Frankly, I just like good stories and good gameplay. That carries me from World of Warcraft to Star Wars: Force Unleashed to Rock Band to Castle Crashers. They're a good time, and sometimes they hold that extra bit of meaning that just feels good for the soul.

Man, a study like this would have been so useful in June, when I was taking speech class and decided to have one of my speeches on society in online games.
But that's okay. I mean that speech was by far my best the whole semester.

If you must have the stereotype...
The stereotypical gamer always talks about drugs. Whether it be deep philosophical discussion about them, the ways they are abused, bragging about being under the influence, they talk about drugs.
The stereotypical gamer takes whatever game he/she plays far too seriously. They don't know the meaning of "go outside." When losing a multiplayer game, the stereotypical gamer will blame his/her entire team for every mistake made. The stereotypical gamer will also accuse people of "kill stealing."
The stereotypical gamer has the mouth of a sailor, and is "No Holds Barred" about it. From sexual harassment to homosexual harassment, the stereotypical gamer will enter into tirades the likes of which rarely even have to do with the game.
The stereotypical gamer is a homophobic bigot that can, and will, mix the two together into an insulting soup of racist homophobic epithets.
How many of us are stereotypical?

Stereotypical gamer was broken with the Playstation 2. With MMOs, it's still a little more common but I think with WoW and its user base of 10 mil subscribers that the stereotypes are being shattered.
Take our guild for instance- top 50 raiding guild, #1 pvp guild in the world for a long time. A few of us decided to meet in Madison, WI since that was a central geographical point. I was working as a copywriter for a large, successful company (no name dropping!) and finishing my undergrad. Our co-guild leaders were brilliant; one was doing post-graduate work at Mayo clinic and the other was a successful hedge fund manager. Our main tank was studying robotics at one of the better schools in the state. So, we're all neckbeards and poopsockers? Ok.

@Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc:
Precisely! Haha... I don't know if there's anything as a 'typical gamer', however from MY findings, it seems that the majority are 18-25 year olds, primarily with average jobs (retail and service sector), and students of sorts. However, my data could be skewed by the fact that I've always lived in college towns, so who knows....

@robinandtami: well, I'd say my female lesbian friends (though I only have 2) both play shooters and love em, especially Call of Duty 4, and they both like ps3 for some reason (no clue why they would but oh well). Younger, though.
oh, and yeah i support gay marriage :D there is no reason not too, just stupid religion in politics is what i blame.

@Shockadin: Insurrection-US Tichondrius. I got lucky and had friends on a PvP day 1 server, so when my guild wanted to up and leave we could go to Tich or Mal'g. I feel bad for people on dead servers, especially PvE. You're pretty much stuck there. =(

The only things that I have in common with the stereotypical gamer are the looks and the mouth of the sailor, then again i got that mouth before i started playing games online, so ya....

I work at a video game store. The only time I really thought a customer was a "stereotypical" gamer was when he got into an argument with his friend over whether to call it "Final Fantasy 2" or "Final Fantasy 4".
And he tried to suck me into it.
...
My answer was 4.

@Zenanon:
"There is a stereotypical gamer. Trust me, I've met them.

Very true, but the biggest problem is the general public think those gamers are the norm, and not the minority...
Either way, most gamers are old enough that we won't limit ourselves based upon the misinformed assumptions of others.
