Saturday Timewaster: Aether
Posted by Maggie Greene at 6:00 AM on September 7, 2008
We're having a slow weekend here at Kotaku: Owen is off, and I'm holed up in bed trying to stave off the flu; Aether made a nice respite from my headache and general feelings of 'blah.' It's a weird little game — a little abstract and fuzzy around the edges, you control a little guy and his pet who can fly through the air with the greatest of ease, using said pet's tongue as a grappling hook/trapeze .... I actually quite enjoyed zipping through space from planet to planet, trying to solve puzzles and bring the colour back to unhappy people (the core of an unhappy planet seen above). It's not the most intuitive game ever — it did take me some time to figure out how to successfully get off the ground and into the atmosphere - and I broke out the mouse because the trackpad wasn't cutting it. Still, it's pretty and soothing (and short) — good for a bit of time on a Saturday afternoon.

Just think of bionic commando and you'll be fine for controlling. Still have no idea what to do on the planets though.

The game gives off a strange vibe. The dull colors and looping piano melody is a bit emotional and solemn, but despite that everyone is smiling like they just found a twenty in their laundry pocket. The controls were a tad confusing at first (I had no idea I needed to latch onto the clouds), but once I got into it, the game is actually a bit therapeutic and relaxing. Perfect right before work.

Really? I got it the moment I got the game started. I was singing the Spider Man theme.
That said, I am to stupid to figure out what to do at the planets. =D

Grappler were quite awesome to use, hardest puzzle was the green planet imo. :)

Snow planet? Er, I don't remember that..
The green watery-planet has balloon-looking things that I just swung around them in circles until they popped. There were 4, I think.
Core planet, you just keep swinging from crystal to crystal without touching the ground. After a bit, you're done!

Rocky Planet: Land on all the moons
Snow Planet: I am on this one now and I am stumped. I figured out the first two by just messing around until something happened.

"I'll be happy when I'm dead."
I do adore this new generation of surreal, emo, navel-gazing games, like this and "Braid".
The controls are def wonky. It can be cumbersome to get going, even once you've figured out how to swing. The planet puzzles can be frustrating because aside from the "flash", there's sometimes no huge indication that you've beaten a puzzle. And I had to restart the game because the "click all over the place" interface makes it real easy to click on an advert or my bookmark toolbar...
Yet... a fun rainy-Saturday time-waster, indeed.

@adventlife: By reading the 20 comments before yours.
I really enjoyed this, and indeed the puzzles were very easy. The most difficulty I had was trying to get out of the ice planet after I had finished, the gravity was just enough that I had to swing just right to get back above ground. Complicated by it being my first planet, thus me being slightly retarded about swining still.

This game was a lot of fun, its got a good looping melody and it's pretty easy going. Finding out what to do on the planets isn't too hard actually, as soon as i figured out its a game where you use the environment to beat the puzzles, the rest of the planets were easy.
My only gripe with this game is that it takes too long to get from planet to planet, that's the only boring part to this game.

Are we at the stage where we can call a video game pretentious yet? Because if we are this is it. It's just artsy for the sake of being artsy.

Meh... I didn't enjoy this too much, and I tend to label myself a fan of "artsy games." I agree with eelmonger - it's a little too pretentious for my standards.
It's one thing to shroud a beautiful tale in ambiguity (see Team ICO). However, to have nothing but ambiguity, meaningless/unexplained depressing monologues, and a slightly hospitalish serenity/unease feeling doesn't build enough atmosphere or plot to draw me in. Couple that with puzzles that are equally meaningless ("Stand on the moons until they go down", "Swing and touch all of the crystals", etc.) doesn't add up well for me.

I got it (was it mentioned here?) yesterday, it was very soothing, and deep, if you can put your mind around the fact that the creator put a lot of himself in the game.
I don't understand the people that say it's "pretentious", it's a free game. It's not saying or being marketed as the next ICO, or MGS, or nothing, it's a game, it's out, it's free.

Wow, I played it and beat it in about half an hour. It was great :D this is the kinda thing that would be really cool released on the wii as Wiiware, but the entire collection, or maybe a dollar for each segment, that sounds more then fair. When I end up paying more then a dollar for a drink from a vending machine, I'd pay a dollar for a good 20 minute chunk of a game.

The snow planet is Earth and it has no crystals. Crystals were on the Desert planet. Beat the other planets then go back to earth. It shrinks with every planet you complete.

I liked it. You didn't get any response from the citizens when you restored their planet though. Still trying to make sense of the puzzles, wondering did they have any meaning? Were you playing a melody for the planet core? I could tell that the other things were sucking the colour from the planet, you had to reunite bits of the planet that had become moons, since they all complained about eachother/the planet and I'm guessing the fish were some sort of parasite on the water planet. I don't like games that label themselves as art. Reminds me of pretentious, goatee, glasses wearing college students. But I did enjoy the game. I just wish they left it to the player to decide whether or not it's art instead of saying 'yeah, okay, this is art, okay? so if you don't get it, w/e'. That's the vibe I got from this game. Well, not the game, but the creator. The game itself was lovely.

@artofwar420: well, maybe it's the ham-fisted way the creator put his childhood anxieties into the game with characters that say things like "nobody likes me."*, and "at least no one can hurt me here."*
if it were a longer game he could have actually developed characters, which would have been better. but that's not the game he was making. maybe there's a better way he could have expressed those things other then blatantly shouting them at the player. that's the only thing that really put me off.
*paraphrasing.
