Beneath the Surface of Tomb Raider Underworld
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 4:00 AM on September 9, 2008
So what's in store for Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Underworld? Well, if it turns out that Norse mythology interests you then you're in for a treat because that's going to be the focus of the latest game in the series. The game will be hitting all consoles (except PSP) and PC November 21st.
Just a heads up the video does reveal a major plot point so if you don't want to know anything about the story then you might want to skip this one.

@jackal888: When a particular individual in Crystal Dynamics witnessed the profit margin generated by the GOW series and decided to roll with it for kicks and in hopes it'll drive some sales.

@goddessakasha:
you got that right!
i for one am getting this game, hopefully they are true to the mythology. people need to stop advertising what they WONT get even though in the end it will be bought.....for them to make this big they need sales and apparently there is a huge fan base out there just the fact they totally reimagined the concept of tombraider.

@Devmani: Actually, Norse mythology has been used quite a bit already. The Valkyrie Profile series is completely influenced by Norse mythology. More recent games have been Odin Sphere, Viking: Battle for Asgard, and of course, Too Human.
I love studying Norse mythology, and the fact that this Tomb Raider uses it in their story makes me even more excited for this game!

So Lara wants to "...kill a god". Where have we heard that before? How did God of War and Tomb Raider merge?

Not a big TR fan but just finished Anniversary 360 ( I know a little late to the party) and I did enjoy it. May give this one a shot. And yeah, let this be the last Norse... whatever, until the next Silicon Knights horror show. Mr. Dyack you probably shouldn't have defended your game so vehemently, it wasn't that good. At all.

Funny how I always read comments about people not being interested in a Lara game, yet the games end up all selling really well.
I guess the true Lara fans don't spend much time posting on gaming blogs and forums.

Intriguing... Though the Tomb Raider series has never really interested me mainly because of the controls, story, and overall tone have little appeal to my own interests. It's just not my type of game, in the end...

@Devmani: Yeah, you never really see Roman mythology used anymore. Although I think the original Tomb Raider had some mythological mishaps, where you were raiding "Neptune's" temple in ancient *Greece*...

I highly enjoyed TR:L, so I will pick this game up, but it won't be until sometime in 09 or after a price drop.
Too many other games to worry about before I have my way with Lara.

Woah, Lara really has come a long way since her old days.
The facial animation was a bit stiff, but everything else looks very pretty.

Great more Norse mythology, is this the new "brown" of game design first Too Human and now this. (you can include WoW in that as well if you really think about it.) Don't get me wrong I love mythology but it seems like Norse style is popping up frequently this year.

Reminds me of every other Tomb Raider plot line where the developers seem compelled to force a connection between their random game locations by rationalizing a hokey amalgam of Chinese/Norse/Mayan/Egyptian myths.

I haven't played Tomb Raider: Legend yet, but I played Anniversary on the Wii. I can't say I really enjoyed it. It felt like Prince of Persia minus the frustration-easing "Rewind" feature and the compelling story, with these empty and lonely levels that were just too vast for their own good. I felt pretty bummed while I was playing it, actually.
That said, I love games where you jump and climb all over stuff, so I would like a really good Tomb Raider game.

@Saliu: lol, 'horror show'. It's actually in the running for my GOTY. But I can appreciate the need to use a TR post to hate on TH, opportunities to speak your mind about that game have been few and far between on the internet.
Anniversary is pretty good, it's the only 360 game I actually attempted to get 1000/1000 gamerpoints. Why I cared to do that I have no idea.

@BelmontHeir: I didn't care for Anniversary or any of the older Tomb Raider games, but Legend is surprisingly good. If Underworld builds on Legend without bringing back the boredom of Anniversary, it ought to be a worthwhile game.

Norse mythology; probably about the only mythology in gaming that hasn't been covered a thousand times yet. Eventually they'll have to make up a new mythology and put Lara on Mars or in another solar system.
Mmmm, Lara... Barack Obama should have picked her as his potential veep. An attractive woman who likes guns, running for Vice President of the United States?
Eh, couldn't happen.

@Xiatter:
Norse mythology is well tread.
Lost vikings, Odin Sphere, Valkrie Profile, Too Human, bits of starcraft (protoss tribe names), FF series has many norse inspired elements, Ragnarok online, bits of Halo, and Rune.
Not as well tread as the tolkienesque settings, midevil europe, feudal Japan, feudal China, or Greece/roman but still pretty well tread.
Whats not well tread is games using native north or South American mythologies, African mythologies, Russian mythologies, or Indian mythologies.

God of War invented Nietzsche, who then went on to invent deicide.
Anyway, I'm from cnadinavia myself, so I'm not saying no thanks to more Norse mythology (i can haz Lara vs. Midgard serpent or Fenris wolf?).

Nice! People don't know jack about the story and are already crapping on the game! :D How about if you want to crap on a story, you experience it first, (hopefully) understand it, and THEN pass judgment? Oh wait... I forgot where I was posting for a moment. LOL.
Color me interested. Very interested.

Man soooooo much hate for this game. As a big Tomb Raider fan I find that to be offensive, especially considering the series' recent return to form. The puzzles in Tomb Raider have always been some of the most compelling in video games and this sounds to more of the great formula. Now if they can keep the crappy driving sequences from Legend out of this, it should be an awesome game. I also think the fact that Lara gets dirty and will show wear and tear from her environment is a very unique thing. It will draw the player in since their actions have a visual effect on the character. Also the plot looks pretty cool. Sure it may have the same mythos used in previous games, but it ties them together with a new underlying theme we haven't seen before. Not to mention this is Lara's first true step into the Next Gen.

@nitromic: I can't wait, this is one of the games I'm looking forward to the most actually. The plot isn't meant to be deep as such anyway, it's a B-Movie plot at best. But it's fun = most important of all.
