First Look At James Cameron's Avatar Set
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:00 PM on September 9, 2008
For those unfamiliar with James Cameron's upcoming Avatar, the very gamey flick follows an ex-Marine's struggle for survival on an alien planet. The title refers to the main character's status as an avatar — a human mind in an alien body. Besides creating oodles (yes, oodles) of CG alien characters to inhabit the flick, Cameron is also planning to show the movie (and the movie based games!) in stereoscopic 3D. The avatar game is apparently already running in stereoscopic 3D! Cameron has been shooting the film in New Zealand, and it's about 60 percent done. Cameron's gunning to have it finished it time for its December 2009 release. Above is a picture of the set, which looks more like they're making a game and less like a movie in the traditional sense.

The hype machine is in overdrive for this thing, but it's hard not to get excited when you realize it's the next big science-fiction film from the writer/director of Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss. I have a strong feeling Cameron is going to deliver with this film and it's going to be unlike anything we've seen before.
Worst case scenario? It's The Fifth Element in 3-D, or something.

I heard about a movie like this years ago, didn't it get canceled because everyone thought the idea sucked?

@oldboy313: Explain this to me. Every time this movie is brought up this is all I hear.I've read up on the movie I've seen the concept art, but frankly there's nothing there to tell me that this movie will revitalize the film industry. Is there some super secret trailer I haven't seen that apparently every one else has that they keep proclaiming this movie's supposed greatness?
Someone please explain to me why I should be drinking the koolaid as well.

James Cameron is one of the greatest sci fi film makers of all time. I really hope this movie turns out well even though i know nothing about it. It might even make me forgive that godawful excuse for a film Titanic. Probably not but theres a chance.

@Nirolak: No, I actually didn't. Humor was just my out in case a raving fanboy dropped the knowledge hammer on my head :) Thanks for the info.

I will be using Avatar to gauge how bad (or good) the Battle Angel Alita movie will be.

@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): James Cameron's Avatar and Avatar: The Last Airbender are totally different things. There were actually some legal battles between the two.
Unless of course you knew that and were just being sarcastic, it's late and I probably missed it then.

James Cameron is very innovative when it comes to how he produces his movies. I am very interested to see how this project turns out as I have been following it for a long time.

I've said many stupid things here on Kotaku but I'm going to qualify my question with the fact that I feel myself being crushed by my own sheer ignorance of this movie and so:
Will the this movie pay off in the first two minute of watching it just like the game did?

Awesome!
I've been waiting quite a while to see something tangible in regards to this film. For those of you who don't know, Sigourney Weaver stars in this flick.

I was excited, thinking somehow James Cameron is making the Avatar: The Last Airbender movies now instead of M. Night Shmlmhlnlhmn. :[
As far as Cameron's Avatar; I guess I'm pretty out of the loop because this is the first I've heard of it. Sounds kinda neat, though.

Cameron's Avatar is going to be of undetermined quality. I hope it is good.
M Nights avatar however, will be undoubtedly awesome since they flipped his TWEEST switch to off.

Yeah, I thought the same; I'd go see Airbender, but after the last few M. Night films went up Shyamalan creek without a paddle, I'll probably pass on this.

@flukielukie: Wow, you sure knew how to make yourself look ignorant. Avatar and it's game could have an effect on the games biz because the film is one of the first full length high budget films designed for 3d from the outset. Its only a matter of time until 3d display tech reaches the games industry.
@ManlyVGnoob: Not really, it's been in development for ages and Cameron has just been waiting for CG and the camera technology to catch up with what he has wanted to do for a long time

James Cameron = good.
James Cameron + sci-fi = very good.
News of James Cameron's new sci-fi flick = disappoinment that it's not a film adaptation of that frickin' cartoon about a bouncy kid with supernatural powers.
Sometimes I think I've grown up, and then crap like this happens. I'm gonna' go watch Samurai Champloo.

@CrazyEcho: Ah, that's right. I knew SOMEONE was working on an adaptation of the animated series. And now I remember why I felt such intense nerd rage. M. Night Shylamanafanalanadan is pretty much certain to "tweeeest" the movie into stupidity.
Haha, looking at the set photo, I was sure that was a Firebender courtyard they were putting together. ^_^'

I've read the (80pg?) script/treatment 2 years ago (found it via google cache - I recommend the read if you can find it) and it was a engaging, page-scrolling read. Gaming never crossed my mind when reading it.
There are parts of the story that will appeal to everyone, as a major part of the story is essentially a love story between an Avatar and an Alien (it's quite touching actually), but there will be lots of amazing eye-candy and adventure that will lend itself to a good videogame.
After I read the treatment, and finding out about the cutting edge technology used, this has become my number one movie to see. I can't wait.

Human Bomb Committed Solaricide

Haven't there already been oodles of scifi stories about this same concept? There was a great trilogy about a man who could project his mind to explore other planets and a short story about us building a new type of human DNA-based creature to explore and inhabit a gas giant, but I'm pretty sure this concept has also been around elsewhere.
