Gaming's Most 'Controversial' Moments
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on September 9, 2008
We know. It's a "top XX" list. And on controversy to boot. Before you yawn, the reason we're posting this is that it's from a sensible news outlet, which not only makes a pleasant change from the usual culprits, but is also a good read. Mainly because it's able to both look past Hot Coffee into some genuine sex scandals (the Guy Game's underage T&A scandal) and look past 2004 (they remember Carmageddon!).
Gaming's biggest controversies: 1/10 [MCV]

Man, that site is awful. I get 503s every other click, so I'm not even going to bother trying to get through the whole list. At least Carmageddon made the list - I totally love that game. Played it with a keyboard, too.

All you Carmageddon lovers, Edge did a great feature on the Making Of it a few months back. Here's an excerpt from it that always makes me laugh:
"This is best seen in the story of Tony, the model for Max Damage and a willing victim of Stainless Games' research. He's the subject of an anecdote that deserves reproduction in its entirety.
"Tony was a kind of general handyman around, but also a nutter," begins Buckland, before Hughes helpfully adds: "Absolutely mental." Buckland continues: "We needed a reference for what someone getting run over looked like, so of course he was the volunteer nutcase and I was driving a half-ton Chevy station wagon at the time. There was a car park outside the office, so we went out there and drove into him repeatedly: he had a piece of cardboard stuck up his shirt, as if that would help. At one stage, Neil was driving, and Tony asked if he could floor it and hit him harder so he could clear the roof. Neil hit him at about 35mph and he went clear through the windscreen! The police turned up because they'd had reports that someone was being run over in a car park, but when they saw the camera and stuff they headed off."
Lane was the man in the passenger seat that day, filming: "It was awesome, but the exposure was set wrong and it was unusable footage. We didn't ask him to do it again." Mr Tony was obviously a hardy type. "The Max Damage footage as well, that was him," continues Buckland. "There's a whiplash action where his head jumped forward - that's because we smashed him across the back of the head with a pool cue. He had a crash helmet on, and said, 'Hit me as hard as you can!'""

@geekgrrl: Good to know that I'm not the only one that annoyed. Worst, it wasn't even consistent. First four were all in the same window, next one spawned a new one, after that two more in the same, and then the rest in new windows. If you're going to be wrong, at least you can be wrong in a consistent and predictable manner.
On a more serious note, Carmageddon 1 was awesome, 2 was better, but 3 was crap. Pedestrians shouldn't die just because they touched you (especially if you're not actually moving at any appreciable speed), and they shoud not be able to survive getting hit at 70+ MPH.

Carmageddon etc etc etc etc. If Carmageddon was realeased now it'd be banned in an instant, which is totally weird. As luck would have it videogames back then weren't really even noticed by the mainstream news, thank god.
@Obli: Columbine massacre and others like it (the only other one I can think of right now is that 2 towers invaders game) were nothing but dumb programmers trying to make a name for themselves by producing games that try to piss off the public. They shouldn't ever be listed anywhere having to do with videogames, as they just demean everything associated.

From the page about America's Army: "The US's trained killers have used radio, TV and the movies to convince kids that it's 'cool' to give up their lives for their country (or their country's low energy costs, at any rate)"
Wow. So I suppose Britain doesn't have a military, then? Or maybe theirs is just not trained to kill people? Oh well, guess I'll go fill up my car with all that cheap gas we pumped out of Kuwait and Iraq and drive my SUV to get some McDonald's to eat while I watch American Idol. Yup, yup. I see that America-bashing is still 'cool'. One can only hope that these smarmy assholes will give it a rest once we give Bush the boot...

For those who can't get it to load:
1) Night Trap - 1992
2) Mortal Kombat - 1993
3) Carmageddon - 1997
4) 404 not found. Link says "Ubisoft faces America's anti-army"
5) Manhunt - 2004 (the kid who killed another kid, newspaper reported the murderer was a big Manhunt fan, turns out it was the victim.)
6) The Guy Game - 2004 (this one was pretty funny, they accidentally had an under-ager going topless in game. DOH!)
7) Hot Coffee - 2005
8) Manhunt 2 - 2007 - UK ratings board denied rating in the UK, forced to relent.
9) God of War II - 2007 - dead goat promo stunt.
10) Resistance: Fall of Man - 2007 - The Manchester Cathedral debate.

@MechaTama31: No, Britain has a military... their training must just suck. Reminds me of a line from Spartan:
"What they gotcha teachin' here, young sergeant?"
"Edged weapons, sir. Knife fighting."
"Don't you teach 'em knife fighting. Teach 'em to kill. That way, they meet some son-of-a-bitch who studied knife fighting, they send his soul to hell."

@alzheimers: I completely second that. And maybe add a ninja into the mix to dice things up. And the ninja's on fire.
@AoE: Spartan had so many good lines like that, though the overall movie was alright.
Overall, the list is OK, but as mentioned above by others, those controversies seem pretty pale.
I'd like to see a list of more corporate or personnel controversies or scandals (stuff like the recent Team Ninja affair), or perhaps Sony bullying the retail market during the PS1/PS2 era. A slightly different take, but hopefully a little more interesting.

there was nothing really wrong with super columbine massacre rpg except perhaps that it may have disturbed people. actually, ars technica even says it might've been a great game had it not been that the only people who would play wouldn't gain anything from it. there IS a reason it was made though (to help understand what contributed to columbine) although there are certainly some cases of tastelessness among these kinds of games (vtech rpg, i'm looking at you).
that said, the list was more than a little disappointing. i mean, come on. resistance? REALLY??

I still play Carmageddon with the HL:Source upgrade...it's a f'ing sick game. Not even for the fact that you could kill pedestrians, but simply for the joy of the physics of the game. That game had the most epic physics of any other car game I've ever played. The things you could do, and the crashes. Just one of my favorite all-time games.
I've always wondered why don't they just release a prettied up game remake based on the same physics engine. It would sell, no doubt.
