New Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood Developer Diary
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 5:00 AM on September 9, 2008
Sonic Chronicles — being the first Sonic game I've been excited for in years — is looking pretty solid. Bioware CEO Raymond Muzyka and President Greg Zeschuk give us insight into some of the things the team has been thinking about when combining a Sonic game and RPG-style play. The game will hit stores September 30th.

Is this where I insert my "Sega should stop running Sonic into the ground and get to work on a new Daytona USA" rant?

I'm still on the fence. I think I shall wait for the user reviews before I invest in this one.

It's done the imposable, it's a Sonic game that will make me give two shits about the rest of his idiot friends. That and it's...good. My god, hell has frozen over.
The downside is you best watch the areas of the internet you folks visit, because the Sonic smut flood will once again kick into high gear as folks with too much money and artists ready to /34/ will be on this like flies to -shit-

I'm looking forward to this. Sonic's console outings may have sucked in recent years, but all of the handheld stuff as been pretty good.

I love how he slides in the "It has to reach the Bioware level of quality" line. He knew he couldn't say "Sonic" level of quality of "SEGA". I have high hopes for this game. One of my favorite games is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 stars because they took a great character and actually made me care about the story he was in. Y'know more than "save the princess". Smithy is the best villain Mario has come up against to date.

Holy crap, they might actually pull it off. Of course, if they do it will have the unintended side-effect of highlighting how crappy all the other Sonic games are.
As others have been saying since the game was announced, if anyone can make it work it's Bioware.

On a side note though, this game looks spectacular.

Dragon Quest IV and Sonic Chronicles in the same month; it's handheld RPG overload. I'm not complaining, but with all these awesome new releases this fall, it's going to be hard to devote time to all of them, especially long RPGs.

I was really sad they didn't bring this one to PAX. Dragon Age is cool too, but come on, SONIC! And quite possibly the first good Sonic game since...oh god, I don't even remember any more its been so long...

@vid3oman64: I completely agree with you.... I can't get excited about it either for those reasons mentioned, added to it the fact that I think I'm over Sonic the Hedgehog. He doesn't appeal to me anymore.

I just can't take this game seriously when the creators sit down and say, starting at 1:15, "Sonic is associated with speed, and RPGs not always are, so you know, it's an interesting tension... so when you fuse it together, you have an action RPG," and then immediately show footage of Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Big (ugh), all lined up taking turns hitting the opponents, like the old, SLOW turn-based strategy games.
I just can't get excited for this game.

@Foxstar Sixtail: But I believe his point is that Sonic is known for speed, not turn based action. Mario is known for stomping Goombas and saving the Princess and his RPGs still feature that.
Sonic shouldn't be an RPG. Or at the very least, not tun based. It just doesn't convey speed at all.

Bioware's one of my favourite developers. I loved KotOR, the amount of hours I've spent on that game, God.
Jade Empire was okay, Mass Effect was.. meh. I didn't think it had the 'feel' of their past games.
This one looks pretty cool imo.

Why the hell are there still naysayers over this game? It doesn't matter that it's not "Sonic Rush fast" because it's not trying to be. And another thing...speed was not, is not, and never was the foundation of the franchise. The foundation was a likable character, coupled with great levels and top-notch platforming. The speed is just a gimmick, a marketing device, little more. If BioWare feels the need to disregard that aspect to make an RPG, then more power to 'em.

This game seems forced... like they're forcing Sonic to fit in a genre that really doesn't fit it. They said it them selves, sonic is about speed and RPGs can be sort of slow. But hey, I'm sure the basic elements of the game will be good, but mixing the Sonic franchise name with RPG is the issue that I'm having with the game. Its like having a Sonic Chess. ewwww

@Erinaceus: Speed was what made the original Sonic games on Sega systems so damn fun. It wasn't just a little marketing device, it was the core element of the gameplay. Only lately has speed become a gimmick for the series.

For as much as I like cross-over games, I still think this one is a bad idea. Sonic is not a character well suited to RPG gameplay. The battle-system does not resemble Sonic in any way. Hell, it looks like any other Bioware RPG with Sonic in it. Also at least Mario has a lovable group of buddies to party with, I hate every one of Sonic's crappy friends except for Knuckle and Tails.

@Đipic: The core element of the gameplay involved a zen of speed and platforming, coupled with various other elements. If speed was the singular core, Sonic would have been just a racing game. And unfortunately, you're right, with superficial games like Sonic Rush overemphasizing the speed, it has evolved into a total gimmick. And, as I said before, if BioWare feels the need to deemphasize speed in favor of other elements, then we should be open to it...hell we should welcome it.

@Đipic: If you can, go back and play the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Once you get to the end of the second zone (Marble Zone), take note which of these actions you did more of:
A) Constantly run
B) Wait patiently for platforms, obstacles, etc. to move into a position allowing you to traverse the rest of the level.
C) A balance of both
Unless you die a lot and/or lose tons of rings, it's probably not A.

@Erinaceus:
Wrong, speed has and always will be the foundation of the series. Was Sonic a character in Sonic for the Genesis, no way. No one except for crazed fanboys actually enjoy the story element of the game. You say the game is about top notch platforming, but without the speed there'd just be a blue ball bouncing on a spring, not a very inventive game design. The problem with the franchise is that Sonic Team does not want to put the effort to put the speed into 3-D. Bioware should shut up about the depth of the Sonic Universe because there is N-O-N-E, only whiny anime voice actresses and pornography. Bioware should stick to their element and start making KOTOR3.

THE SONIC CYCLE:
Step one:
New screens show up, they look great
No friends involved
Fans proclaim Sonic's triumphant return
Step two:
More info released, new friends show up
Awkward game mechanic revealed
Expectations tank
Step three:
The game come out, it sucks
Fans proclaim they will never be fooled again
Rinse and repeat while money flows in

@Khalil:
Strangely I never played the first Sonic, but the ONLY games I owned for the Genesis were Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. I played the hell out of those games (and their respective combinations with S&K) and you weren't constantly running. There was a fair bit of platforming and exploration. Besides, you simply couldn't tear through a level (without being super or hyper) because there were always enemies in the way that you had to dodge/kill.
I seriously don't understand where all this "I just want Sonic to run" BS is coming from since Sonic never just ran through stages.
