So What Is Groovin' Blocks Anyway?
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on September 9, 2008
Has anyone else noticed that a large percentage of the WiiWare games released are titles we've heard absolutely nothing about? Take Groovin' Blocks here, released today on WiiWare from developer Empty Clip. It's a rhythm puzzle game that has you earning more points if you drop blocks to the beat. It sounds like exactly the sort of quirky little puzzler I like, yet I'm only hearing about it via a Nintendo press release the day the game launches. Meanwhile, on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN, we wait for games for months. Which is better? Part of me enjoys the anticipation, while another part of me enjoys feeling like I used to back before the internet, when I could walk into a store and be surprised by a new title. It's a conundrum! Either way, I've gone ahead and posted the launch trailer after the jump to help us get to know Groovin' Blocks a little bit better.

Played this....and it rocks pretty hard. I'm a huge electronica fan and the game itself is very solid. A must d/l for me!

This actually looks rather fun! Considering I haven't really liked much from the Wii.
I love my C-64 too ^.^

There's a reason wiiware titles so far are not discussed much.. easy to figure out

Nintendo is evidently known for giving everybody, including the developer, little warning for publication. That being said, I've downloaded this game and I can attest to the addictive factors and the music works really well for it. Keeps the mood intense on the harder levels.

@SAKY: hey, you know, thats a really good comparison. ive never really thought about how digital distribution affects the situation like that. considering that everything that ive bought digitally -game wise- has included a demo for me to play first, or i played it a long time ago, considering old school games...
i guess thats why ive bought four live arcade games and zero wiiware games yet.
that or ive been tired of my wii for sometime now, and my 360 is only a few months old.

Unless I am mistaken it seems that major flaw of WiiWare is lack lack of demos. Since this is digital distribution I can't rent this game first. So because I don't care much for other's opinions of a game I have one alternative, buy this and hope it's good. hmmm, nah.

Based on the preview video, looks like plain old Columns with a new twist. I'll stick with Osu! Tatakae Ouendan or Elite Beat Agents, even if comparing retail titles to WiiWare isn't exactly fair.

I'll wait for reviews. The presentation seems really lackluster. I don't think it would hold my attention very long.

I was going to comment in the "Weekly Wii Update" about how awful and generic the games have been since Lost Winds (I can make an exception for Strong Bad that game was fairly good). But thought someone out there must be enjoying them, all along it was Fahey buying this stuff up.

This seems like the kind of game that would open itself to lots of DLC.... oh wait.

Wow. I really like music games, stylish games and games that are made for pure gameplay, so I think that's one game to buy. Unfortunately, it has one big concurrent - Dr. Mario.

@punkrawka: er...it could have DLC ya know like My life as a king?
@liquid_kore: I don't think my life as a king was generic at all, and bomberman blast looks awesome
This actually looks pretty addicitive, may check it out sometime if it gets generally positive review

Surprises are good, but unnanoucned games suddenly for sale are like finding a dingy duffle bag on the curb. I'm more likely to call the sanitation dept or the bomb squad than open it up for a look.
When I see a game released that both I and the gaming press has been ignorant of it seems likely it's very very cheap. Did they have -no- money left over to send out even a single pres release? It only costs a few hundred dollars. And if they didn't have the money to do any marketing, what else did they skimp on? From experience, QA is one of the first things that gets cut.

@karl_hungus: Zero WiiWare games? You NEED to get Lost Winds and Star Soldier R. If you like platformers and old school shmups that is... The next title I look forward to is Space Invaders Get Even ^_^

I wish Wii Ware was more prominent. I hate to admit it, but with only a handful of exceptions, it seems like it's just drawing in some the shovelware that would've otherwise been disk based. I don't think developers and publishers are taking it seriously.
In fairness, some of it seems like pretty decent, experimental ideas...but we're not seeing any Wii Ware games that manage to blend that experimentalism with the sort of indie passion found in a lot of XBLA and PSN games.
Part of the problem is Nintendo themselves. They have Dr. Mario on there and that Pokemon game and that's it. But you'd never know it, since they're so quite about them.
They need to personally make a huge splash on Wii Ware to show others than it's not all about crappy shovelware games...because sadly, that's just how it's been on EVERY Nintendo system since the N64. Third parties yet again need Nintendo to show them what to do.
But as far as games just sort of appearing like today's...that's the developer's fault. They know they're making their games. Get the word out about them and get people excited. Some studios (like Way Forward and Frontier) get this. Others (like these Groovin' Blocks people) obviously don't.
I mean, it's a guarantee that RMC at GoNintendo will at the VERY least post about it!

@MR. FAP♥FAP!: Magnetica was also a Nintendo title, and is pretty decent.
This game looks pretty good (and I liked 'Helix' as well, although IGN, er, didn't - at least you know the controls are going to work on this one). It seems to be music game season over at WiiWare! Plus it's only 800 points so I'll give it a download.
As for lack of marketing, well, they send out those press releases, and there are videos etc on the My Nintendo channel (which I think was largely intended as a solution to the WiiWare marketing problem)... They ought to find a way to make review copies available a week early or something. I don't think it's realistic to spend big money on advertising $8 games though.

@MR. FAP♥FAP!: I know what you mean but some publishers require weeks of notice for putting out releases and it seems developers have their hands tied. I'm pretty sure ECS (the dev) would've loved to have pressed earlier.

The whole lack of publicity thing is sort of a double edged sword. On the one hand I'm not a fan of having to wait for over a year after a game is announced for it to be released. I had to wait so long for Castle Crashers I eventually forgot about it and assumed it had already been released.
On the other hand, it no doubt helps to build anticipation, which breeds word-of-mouth, which in turn boosts sales, which of course is the most important aspect for the little developers. Without sales numbers, low-budget developers will no doubt meet the chopping block, and it may even cause Nintendo to question the viability of the whole WiiWare concept, which would be a shame.
