There was a picture in the article of someone (I think a pedestrian) walking behind a woman in there, and the caption was "Menace: Figure follows woman in game"... IT WAS A NON PLAYABLE CHARACTER!

It really does do my head in when tabloids go after stories like this. The kid basically stalked women, then attacked them... Apparently broke one woman's arm then pulled her down an embankment before sexually assaulting her and punching her in the side of the head. Yet because of one video game in his bedroom, this is what caused it? God, if the police went round to my house they'd arrest me on the spot if that's considered evidence!

Due to the difference in education levels, papers like The Sun and BILD serve the less intellectual audience. Short sentances, easy word structure, eye catching headlines. They are the EQ of the National Enquirer.

I am unaware of in UK, but in my area one of the "real" papers is the Suddeutsche Zeitung which is like reading the new york times. It rarely if ever posts silly fluff like this.

1/ I'd wager that most if not all guns used in crime at one point were legally bought and owned (and subsequently stolen, lost, etc and perhaps converted). An estimated 500,000 guns are stolen each year; add this to illegal sales of guns to unlicensed/prohibited persons and you can perhaps see exactly why it becomes easy to get a weapon on the black market (it's not like they're importing from Columbia or Sierra Leone, is it?)

As an aside, the PIRA obtained many of it's weapons from (legal purchase in) the US and used them to commit terrorist attacks, assasinations etc.

2/ 18% of guns used criminally in 1998 were in the hands of the original owner; whilst not a majority (far from it), still a significant number (and not rarely)

3/ The majority of gun deaths are suicides (over half of all suicides in the Us are by gun, and a household suicide is 4.8 times more likely if there is a gun in the house). Both these and accidental deaths could be, IMO, reasonably attributed to legal gun ownership in many cases.

4/ You are 2.7 times more likely to be killed in a burglary if you have a gun in your home.

I would agree that gun crime is not just down to being able to legally buy a gun, but is a combination of social and economic factors. However, to me there's an abundance of statistical evidence (from the US and outwith) that legal ownership of guns increases the likelihood of their use in crimes, and the likelihood of those crimes ending in death or serious injury.

I'm fortunate enough to live in the UK, where the banning of guns has resulted (or correlated with) a decrease in 'actual' crime (oft quoted reports of a rise in gun crime in England and Wales are due to a revisal of the system for recording crime - the BCS study, which provides a measurement of both reported and unreported to police crime, shows a steady decrease).

But anyway, I still stand by that guns should be banned- I don't really care about gun crime now that I live in Japan, and it doesn't matter one bit where the guns come from in guncrime cases. If I lived in America right now, I too would probably own a gun (Sprindfield XD 9, probably). I enjoy shooting guns, it's a fun thing to do on a weekend in a sleepy town. But regardless, if we were to have a society that could ban all guns, then the chances are that we'd also have a society that would have grown to be much, much much much nicer. I'm not just talking America, I'm talking all guns everywhere, even those in military application. I'm talking a Star Trek like utopia (yeah, but they had phasers, I know), where there is no need for gun as there is no need to fight/kill/steal for the neccesities of life. If we could actually ban guns everywhere, our current society wouldn't be recognizable, as we all would have progressed to stupid levels of intelligence, being able to resist conflict through understanding. The problem I see with GTA is that because of its extreme sandbox nature it allows anyone to explore their most obscure intentions. Most people would leave it there, but there are some that might go for more.
I'm not completely sure what Jack Thompson means when he says the game trains you to be a killer. But if his thoughs are that potential killers could psycologicaly "prepare" playing it, then i have no other choice but to agree with him.
I dont want to be pessimist, but as long as the industry continues to grow, this behaviors will be on par. The planet is a big place, there are sure loads of closet psychos.

It's just another way of placing blame on something other than a person's independant actions - actions that should have been noticed by loved ones long before it got to the point where senseless crimes are committed.

I've been a fan of GTA for years and years. I've killed possibly hundreds of thousands of virtual people. Not once have I ever had the desire to snuff out the life of a flesh and blood person. I'd be willing to say that 99% of the people who have played GTA games are the exact same. Maybe the bigger focus of concern should be diagnosing and helping people ill enough to consider (and ultimately do) take a life or commit other illegal acts like our little Eminem here.

If a game gives someone the little shove they need to do things like this, they're sick enough to do it sooner or later, regardless of the prompting.

Hmmm... It must be an old GTA. Chavs dont have the money to buy new consoles much less HDTVs unless they starve to death a couple of their already large family members...
