Warhammer Online's Head Start Dates Revealed
Posted by Mike Fahey at 7:00 AM on September 10, 2008
The Warhammer Online "open" is in full swing (sorry about the mess, Europe), though while getting an early look at the game is certainly nice and all, the retail head start is where the real action is at. Mythic Entertainment today reveals that folks who pre-ordered Warhammer Online will get a chance to start building their characters come September 14th, four days before the retail launch. Oh wait, did I say folks who pre-ordered? I meant folks who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition. Those who opted to reserve the standard edition will get access on Tuesday, September 16th, which is only a two-day head start. It's Mythic's way of showing their scalable appreciation for your interest in their product.
Some of you might say this is paying extra for an advantage over other players, which is not true. This is paying extra for a box of cool stuff *and* an advantage over other players. Silly.
Mythic Entertainment Announces Head Start Program Dates for Warhammer Online
Get ready for the worldwide WAAAGH! Mythic Entertainment announced today that North American players who have pre-ordered Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) will be able to get the jump on creating their characters and exploring the world when the game's "Head Start" program begins on September 14th.
The "Head Start" program offers players early access to the game and a chance to join the Realm War before the servers officially go live on September 18th. Players that have pre-ordered the standard edition of the game will be granted "Head Start" access on Tuesday, September 16th at 7am EDT. The lucky fans who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition will be able to log in even earlier and begin play on Sunday, September 14th at 7am EDT.
Whether players choose to join the fight as an incendiary Bright Wizard or a shadowy Witch Elf, the characters they create during the "Head Start" program will carry over their skills, abilities, weapons and career rank into the game when the servers officially open to the general public on the Day of Reckoning - September 18th.
Based on Games Workshop's epic tabletop fantasy war game, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm game play that will immerse players in a world of perpetual conflict for years to come. Available for PC, WAR is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB.

My god I can't believe they think this pile of shit is ready for release....
But then again, this is PC gaming, so I suppose it's not all that surprising.

@goddessakasha: Same here - I preordered from Amazon the first I heard about the CE. I'm a sucker for Warhammer figures and in-game items.
For those not in the closed beta - the PvE is better than WoW was at launch and on par with what WoW is now. PvP is much better than WoW at launch and (I think) better than WoW right now.
The only tripup is that there's very little endgame PvE. Most of the endgame is RvR based, with both sides fighting for control over three paired Destruction/Order zones and two major cities. Once one side has dominated the other's city in RvR, that unlocks the final PvE encounters against the ruling class of those cities. And in a warband of 20ish, the endgame kings drop more than a dozen items of loot, so odds are you're not going home empty handed.

I've played the beta in both closed and guild and despite the bugs I thought the game kept my interest more than the final release of WoW. There's little grinding and even the PvP fights doesn't become frustrating since there's enough players to play against and team up with.
If I see any headaches upon release its how people in guilds may end up going through a rough learning process in using guild abilities and such.

Um, I'm not really sure which MMO betas you've tried, but I wish I'd been on them. This is easily the cleanest MMO beta I've been on, next to WoW. MMO betas are notoriously bad, and to see one that's playable made me smile.
Let me be clear here: there are still problems in the game. Pet pathing is awful, there's graphic and audio corruption (and there always will be, just like in any MMO), some Tome unlocks aren't finished/aren't firing off at the right time, etc. But the BASE of the game is very, very solid, and that's a rare thing with MMOs.

Warhammer is a crappy game, not a buggy game.

@sixonedoesitall: You are either certifiably insane, have a massive misunderstanding how how betas function, or really would prefer WAR not succeed. For a beta, this is one helluva a content-heavy game. Yes, there are bugs. That's what Beta is for. To find them and get rid of them as efficiently as possible.
@baberg: Considering WAR's PvP system is at least twice as good as WoW's, I find it funny to say that you (think) it's better.

That's not what I've heard from elder testers, but I guess it's relative to the person.

There's really no point in saying "it rocks" or "it sucks". The very fact that multiple MMO's exist is proof of the principle that there is no 'perfect formula' for a game. Different people like different things. So, instead of whining that it's just crap, why not talk about the elements of it you didn't like? Were the controls counter-intuitive? Did the combat feel sluggish? How was the player interaction? How did the GUI work?
In this day and age of so many online games, broad generalizations don't do anyone any good. Discuss the elements, so that people can make informed decisions.

Meh, I don't think Warhammer will do all that well right off the bat. Unless it has the capability to put up butt-loads of servers quickly to meet demand if it's there.
WoW had the luxary of being able to meet capacity slowly, because there wasn't a groundbreaking game like it since EQ (and tbh, EQ wasn't all that enjoyable to me at all). Thus, it could sit on it's hands until after the first year when the fun quality finally met expectation.
Warhammer on the other hand MUST start fast, and must be able to meet demand immediately, or risk losing players back to WoW when WotLK comes out or even AoC.
Warhammer to me is a unique WoW clone, in that it could be better then WoW. And if I recall, WoW originally was a EQ-clone. If Mythic can do this right, they can at least get a good carve of the MMO pie if they can prove that Warhammer can be as fun or funner then WoW.
Though, I do worry about Warhammer lore - because most gamers who play MMO's do not know any Warhammer lore, compared to Warcraft lore which was born out of a popular RTS. People care about lore - it's what seperates WoW from every other MMO out there.
Besides, most players don't get into a game immediately. They wait until reviews, then the trials come out.

@sixonedoesitall: Emmmm...pardon? I mean, I'm in the beta and have decided I probably won't keep my order for the full game as I don't have the time to devote to an MMORPG right now. But...wha??
I don't understand how you can claim "the[...]controls blow". They are almost exactly the same as WoW. Loads of little WoW shortcuts (movement-wise) are in the game too, it took me about 10 seconds to know all the controls. Fair enough if you hate them, but you were saying WoW was better in an earlier post so that doesn't make sense to me.
And the combat seems fine to me, it's like a mix of WoW and Guild Wars. The UI's a bit too busy though, there are far too many progress bars for my liking. Should have hidden them away on status screens or something.

I've finally managed to get my butt into the EU open beta, and can happily confirm that in my own humble opinion at least, Warhammer's a good solid game with a lot to offer. (Although it is almost exactly the same as WoW in about 90% of it's execution, the little extras they've added are pure gold.)
After seeing the way GOA have been handling things in our part of the world, though, and especially their attitude towards communicating with their customers, I've cancelled my pre-order of the Collector's Edition and won't be touching this one for a good long while.
I'd recommend it without reservation to any Stateside gamers who have had enough of WoW for now and fancy a fresh start in a new environment.

I'm in the beta as a White Lion...it's kinda cool, but you're nothing more than a gloried hunter with a cat. Like with LOTRO, it's hard to say, ...this is better than WoW, or that is...since the frigging game seems like nothing more than WoW wrapped in another covering art. I basically started up the game, and needed ZERO learning curve, as it was nearlly identical to WoW, imho. I've seen nothing to make me stop my addiction to WoW at this point, but I've only started off with my character.
Here's my thing, I KNOW WoW...all the lore, all the mechanisms, so to use a boxing analogy...you've gotta BEAT the champ...no referees giving you a win...Nothing has been able to beat Wow, and WAR isn't it...look more like LOTRO imho. I didn't even try AOC...sorry, but I had serious work to do in Wow.

I've found the gameplay enjoyable and for the most part I get the game. Its more user-friendly than WoW and I've already managed to get a level 10 character. I'm only now getting into the RvR and the PvP aspects ( its more my boyfriend's thing ), but so far so good.

Apparently there've been some significant problems with the (North American) EA Store beta passes as well, with customer support staff from Mythic and EA referring frustrated, beta key-less preorder customers back and forth between the respective companies. I can attest to this because I was one of them, and the guy who finally escalated and resolved the issue described it as an "ongoing and apparently never-ending headache" for him.
Not terribly encouraging, but I'm still going to give the game a chance once the client is done DLing.

EQ was an MMO that borrowed heavily from DnD, MUDs and Ultima online.
Dark Age of Camelot was just another MMO based off the EQ model, except it excelled at group vs group PvP (for many people) and was PvE light for some time.
WoW was just another MMO based of the EQ model that excelled with it's ease of use, brand awareness/developer and streamlined PvE experience coupled with terrible and horrendous tacked on PvP mechanic.
Warhammer Online is just another MMO based off the EQ model that excels with it's presentation and PvP mechanics.
Each MMO takes the good from the previous gen (ZOMG WOW used a hotbar, they suck and stole it from EQ!111). Hell Mythic all but did away with health/mana regen compared to EQ/AO/AC which WoW improved upon.
WoW is starbucks/mcdonalds.
WAR is a mom and pop (EA be damned).
I've been in closed beta for as long as I can remember, Elder beta, PW, Open Beta, CE ordered in may and my headstart can't come soon enough. The PvP is just that good for ME.

Been playin open beta for a few days now.
One thing that strikes me is how underwhelming the graphics are. For something that came out 4 years after the fact, the graphics seem pretty rough around the edges(I have the graphics cranked to the max) And the water looks horrendously awful...I actually lol'd when I saw it.
That said, The PVP is seamless and much more smoothly integrated into the narrative of the gameworld. The Dark aspect of the setting will be much more appealing to some than the cartoony feel of WoW.
Of course, this is beta, so I'm sure some things will change, but I can't imagine how much different 2 weeks will make in the builds of the game engine.

@Cpt_Bongwater: You realize the beta comes with the graphics at its lowest possible options? You have to actually goto your GFX card settings prior to launching the game and turn up the settings (like turning AA on for instance). I assure you it looks significantly better.
That being said the game does indeed need more polish to it, Im pleading for a WoW alternative sooner than Diablo 3.

it's fun, buggy (no surprise there)but fun. You'll feel like your playing WoW 1.8, just different enough not to be the same game.
So far i've enjoyed playing as a dwarf engineer and a bright wizard the most. Havn't really tried any of the chaos side of things yet. Played the first few levels of a zergling(?) trainer, seemed really pokey and i was bored with the character by level 4. The White Lions are pretty cool, simply because you have a pet, but it was by far the buggiest class I played.
