Threatening Emails vs. Ken Levine's Spidey Sense
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 PM on September 11, 2008
The PC version of BioShock featured some nasty, nasty SecuROM copy protection. Almost a year later, all BioShock PC DRM was finally gone - hey, what's a year, right? A fart in the space time continuum! BioShock designer Ken Levine tells magazine PC Zone:
When we had the copy protection issues come out, I was out there talking about the product, I didn't run away from that. And frankly I got some nasty fucking threats... I think it's important that somebody takes responsibility, and at the end of the day my job as creative director is to sort of be the arbiter of taste... With great power comes great responsibility right?
Righto Spidey, righto.

Quick everybody, send death threats to Ray Muzyka so i can un-install Mass Effect when I feel like it!
Burn in hell Securom, EA's definately going to feel the flame pain with RA3. Those C&C fanboys are a rowdy bunch.

Great responsibility? I always thought it was, "With great power comes great opportunity to abuse that power to get what you want." Can I get a do-over?

@WordMan: He's saying that he owned up to the decision, but implying that some of the reaction was absurdly excessive. You can own up to a bad decision without deserving all the backlash. If a kid owned up to spending his lunch money on toys, that wouldn't mean he deserved it if his mom killed him and buried him in the back yard, yanno?

Wait, is he saying he deserved the threats? Or that the people who made the threats need to be held accountable?

@Thassodar: They decided a PS3 port would be a financially sound move due to a number of factors (such as critical success, vastly improved PS3 support for UE3, and improved PS3 adoption rates) and bought their way out of any exclusivity contract they might have signed.
Or were you looking for a less boring and practical answer?

@Thassodar:
1. What does this have to do with anything?
2. It was an Xbox 360 and Windows exclusive for over a year.

@Thassodar: Money, money, money makes the world go round. It's still a good thing, though, because it gives more people an opportunity to play the game.
You have to give Levine a bit of respect for not laying blame somewhere else, or taking a jab at piracy and deflecting the question. Still, every time he talks about BioShock I get the impression that he made it in his basement or something. He takes a lot of credit for all the failures and successes, and it's weird how he's emerged out of this game that way. The cult of celebrity extends to developers more and more these days.

Hey didn't the box for Bioshock say PC and Xbox 360 Exclusive? What ever happened to that, hmmm?

Not to justify the threats, but the industry needs to think of another way to secure their property. Because none of this is stopping people from stealing the game, well unless they're targeting computer illiterate grannies.
I decided not to pick up two games this year just because of the evil DRM.

And now PC gamers have to boycott EA games. No damn DRM! No treating us like thieves! They wanna fuck us! LEGAL users. I say NO! Spore and Red Alert 3 is just a good start.
Check Amazon's Spore site. 1960 one-star reviews! I already wrote my opinion there - you should do it too. Maybe if they lost some cash, they'll learn to respect (a little more) their clients?

In other words, "I lack the imagination, integrity and ethics to implement a consumer- and computer-friendly protection scheme that's as effective and well-received as both Blizzard and Valve has demonstrated is possible."
Thanks, Ken!

Just a note:
"Almost a year later, all BioShock PC DRM was finally gone"
Wrong. SecuROM is still in place and needed, the DVD still has to be in the drive and you still have to activate upon installation, only the limitation on the amount of activations has been lifted.

Like it's been said (but hey, more visibility for this is needed) it's not "finally gone."
It still needs the disc in the drive, and it still needs to activate online to a server that it counts on being operational.
I bought Bioshock too! If I want future PC games from 2k... it's torrent-only! If they truly removed it tomorrow, it would STILL be torrent only, for at least as long as it took for them to remove it from Bioshock. No guilt or remorse... but if the game was spectacular I'd try to find a way to pay key dev team members without 2k getting a cut...

The comment about Bioshock losing its DRM is not correct. The activation limit was removed but the DRM software itself still persists.
