Capcom Swears Off Console Exclusives
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 9:40 AM on September 12, 2008
Capcom has decided its days of releasing games exclusively to one platform are over. In its fiscal 2008 shareholder's report, the home of Resident Evil stated:
"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games"
From here on in, Capcom will be developing all its titles using its proprietary MT Framework development kit, which should make it easy to cross-compile to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

@MrBionic: Ever wonder why exclusives tend to be better than multi-plats? Optimization for the hardware buddy. Exclusives do more than fuel the fires of fanboyism (blame the haters, not the devs for making a game).

Good call Capcom. . . @Pornosaur: I don`t think you sat down long enough with Dead Rising to really understand the game design. Yes, I admit, the annoying phone call every 2 seconds sends me into a furious rage, but the rest of it is meant to be difficult.
The game is designed for multiple run throughs and trying a different course each time. One of the few games these days thats actually difficult.

It didn't say there won't be any exclusives, just not on any of their major releases. Obviously this is more of a PS3 vs 360 issue. What Capcom game is out now besides Dead Rising that isn't on both Ps3 and 360? Honestly PS3 only owners, you're not missing much after about 45 minutes of Dead Rising gameplay. Now if they annoucned a Dead Rising 2 that fixed all the game ruining problems of the first and that was exclusive I'd understand the bitch.

I see nothing in that sentence that would prevent them from doing timed exclusives. They do say they won't develop exclusively for one side which is nice I guess. But weren't most of Capcom's games this fiscal year multi-platform?
And since most games are in development for a few years, isn't this statement repeating the obvious? Obviously the games you have already announced as multiplatform are multiplatform. Or do they mean future game development?

@Does Not Equal (ダズノット):
It means: " Capcom will be developing all its titles using its proprietary MT Framework development kit, which should make it easy to cross-compile to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms".
In other words, all three platforms will receive the same games.
The Wii is obviously different because of its different control scheme and hardware specs. I'd imagine the Wii will still get exclusives, probably in the form of modified versions of the "major titles" and smaller games developed specifically for it.
Personally, I'm happy about this decision by Capcom. I'm primarily a PC gamer, so having all of Capcom's major titles available on that platform is a definite plus.

Capcom is great and I was overwhelmed with joy when I read the Xbox would get it's first taste at Resident Evil.
As for the comments on here, i'm glad to see so many people still talking about Dead Rising, it's a great game. I played through it at launch and I liked it but was also overwhelmed by the slight flaws and difficulty. 2 Years to the day I popped that bad boy in and had another go at it, a few days went by and I unlocked 15 more Achievements and had a great time doing it. Once you get the MegaBlaster it becomes a whole different game, lol.

As someone who always ends up owning all systems, there's absolutely nothing wrong with 3rd party exclusives. They are the perks for owning said console, along with the 1st party titles. The real problem is the consumer who has nothing better to do than bitch about the console they do not own.
Does everyone really hope that in the end, all consoles have the same selections? Why not one console then as well?

@thespyderboy: No the Wii doesn't count because of it's hardware limitations and controller. I makes it hard to develop a game to be multi-platform effectively when said game is being made for systems that use different control methods/

Whilst I hope this doesn't become the trend, I do think its respectable of Capcom to openly state this instead of allowing the console makers to play the "wording" game to make it sound like certain games are coming out on their systems first/only. Like how MS (and recently Sony as well I think) pay to advertise multiplat games with only *their* logo at the end.
Good on you Capcom, for not playing the market, and just aiming for the gamers. *nod*

I don't care how "inferior" the Wii's hardware is or isn't. It's wrong and misleading to call something "Multi-Platform" and reference all consoles but not include the Wii. It's different - we get it. It's less powerful - we get it. But it doesn't mean it isn't a console and it doesn't mean it's not next-gen. All these friggin developers talk like the Wii doesn't exist. Just say it - you don't wanna develop for a platform that doesn't have amazing graphics. Geez.

Some of them certainly have been in the past.
Hopefully things will change with the new focus on the MT Framework. It actually uses the PC as the primary development environment, with the 360 and PS3 versions being "ports" of the PC one. One would hope that the PC version will be OK, since it is the base for the other two.

The thing is, the PC 360, and ps3 all perform within a similar level. Developing something to be on multiple platforms will be easier when the platforms are similar. It is inconvenient, costly, and time consuming to dumb something down/improve it for a platform that is different from the one that was originally intended.

We already have the potential for a "one console world" with the PC. Its just that no one, consumer or developer, wants to support it as such.
I'm really hoping this isn't going to be the case with all developers; good chance the PC is going to be hamstrung by the consoles. Unless they have a high-level graphics version for PC and then lower it for consoles. PC and HD consoles might be at a similar level now, but how long until even mediocre gaming PCs outperform the consoles? Especially with the PS3's supposed 10-year cycle.

Then what would the point be of having multiple consoles? They would all play the same games. It would be a joke. Fanboys only exist because they are too poor to buy one or the other so they try to justify their purchase by trolling the internets and spreading their nonsense around. Really, I see no problems in having exclusives. What would Nintendo be without Mario? Or Microsoft without Master Chief? Or Sony without...umm...Snake!? I think the best thing is timed exclusives. One console gets it first, but then the other one gets it with a bunch of bonus content and material that make it worth the wait. But that's just my two cents...

It's ridiculous that they even have to make this announcement, but even more ridiculous that people are saluting them for it. It's unreal how fast everybody forgot Capcom's fabled "Capcom Five", 5 games which Capcom was developing "exclusively" for the Wii. Why the quotation marks? Because one of those games was "Resident Evil 4", and it wasn't too long before it came out on the PS2, too. In fact, only ONE of those five games remained exclusive. This isn't an old trend, either - it may have taken some time (and severe chops throughout the game), but Dead Rising is coming to the Wii.
This announcement deserves, at most, a shrug.

Come on Wii people - it's not Capcom's fault Nintendo failed to produce a machine with HD capabilities. Besides, Capcom actually got some twenty zombies on screen for Dead Rising Wii - it's not the thousands of 360, but it's something isn't it? You cannot demand the same games on hardware that won't support them. Wii simply is not a part of the "multiplatform" this generation - because technically it is in fact a last-gen machine. That's just the way it is, no way around it.
If you have a Wii and want in to some AAA HD action, you'll simply have to buy a 360 or PS3. Put your fanaticism aside, didn't 360 just drop to below Wii levels in price anyway...

@LittleBigPlaneteer: PLEASE! /want Dead Rising for PS3/ Hmm...or maybe not. 360 price has gotten low enough to buy as a second console now.

Bad news for 360, good news for PS3.

@MrMister: I think you should blame Nintendo instead of third parties for making their console so vastly underpowered when compared to their competitors, that multiplatform ports from other consoles aren't very feasible to say the least. Then again, if you like third party games, you should' ve known better before buying a Nintendo console since N64.

@Rasz-42: Must be like leon, when a hot decent girl offers him nookie, he says "No I must decline" then goes off and beats it like no tomorrow. Thus.. the biceps.

@MrBionic: so your telling me that you think Gears Of War would have been equally a good game if it was multi platform, or any Halo game?
I pesonally dont like Halo, but i do think that if GOW or any Halo game had been multi platform, they wouldnt have been able to put in as much time refining it to one specific console and pushing the consoles limits.
