Madden's Millions Rule August Software Sales
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:20 AM on September 12, 2008
Why is this man smirking? His EA Sports division sold over 2.3 million copies of Madden NFL 09 to U.S. gamers last month, putting a serious hurting on the competition and lining up with his "prediction". Madden performed best on the Xbox 360, with over a million copies sold for that platform alone. The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 versions sold over a million combined, so we doubt Peter Moore will be playing favourites.
While Madden intercepted the top three spots in August's NPD software sales chart, Nintendo nabbed the next three, with Wii Fit, Mario Kart and Wii Play continuing to show well.
But what about August's other attention grabbing debut, Too Human? See for yourself.
01. Madden NFL 09 (Xbox 360) - 1,000,000
02. Madden NFL 09 (PS3) - 643,000
03. Madden NFL 09 (PS2) - 424,500
04. Wii Fit (Wii) - 394,900
05. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 328,700
06. Wii Play (Wii) - 200,200
07. Soulcalibur IV (Xbox 360) - 174,000
08. Too Human (Xbox 360) - 168,200
09. Madden NFL 09 (Wii) - 115,800
10. Guitar Hero: On Tour (DS) - 111,200
Not a bad showing for Silicon Knights' Xbox 360 exclusive, especially in light of Too Human's mixed reception, but not exactly a good one either. We're a little more than impressed by Soulcalibur IV's second month showing on the charts, given its solid sales the previous month. Given that it was released here very late in July, however, we can't say we're too surprised.
And Wii Play? We'll let NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier convey just how well that title continues to perform.
"Wii Play continues its remarkable track record, achieving a 44% attach rate to new Wii hardware sales for the month", Frazier wrote. "It has remained a top-10 game each month since it's February 2007 introduction". And with no Wii remote shortage!
Overall, folks in the United States dropped $US 550.67 million on video game software in August.
Thanks to the NPD Group for providing us with monthly software sales data.

@Caduceus: Maybe it's just me, but I hate developers/companies/etc that say, "Oh it's the first of a trilogy." Not only do they assume their game is good, but then I know for a fact they'll keep only a third of the content in the first game. After all, if you want the sequels to be interesting you have to have something new. Why waste all your ideas in the first game when you have two more on the way? Ugh, focus on making the first game great before you start worrying about the next one.

@loserguy: I would supose that this is also a marketing problem. Mostly because EA marketed all their sports game on the wii as "All Play" this year, making it seem that it was a dumbed down game when All play was just another mode on the same game that is on the other consoles.
It also seems likely that the fact that the game is suposedly (i don't have any madden) pretty good on the other consoles and has great graphics would make them the better version.

Id like to see another Too human. The game was just plagued by a long development cycle, switching of platforms, engines, pressure to finally get it out the door, etc...I think the sequel would be much more polished.
Either way those arent bad sales numbers.

This is the second year in a row I haven't bothered to buy the new Madden yet I still play Madden 05 every week. After a while it gets old, but if i get a need for some football, I can just pop in an old copy. Hell, I started up NFL 2k on Dreamcast for the anniversary.

@loserguy: I think your mention of "waggle-platform" actually answers your own question. All the people who were into 'serious' sports games almost assuredly have one of the other (360, PS3, or at the very least PS2) consoles already, and given the fact that the Wii has lower grade graphics and, perhaps more importantly, highly questionable controls, the real question is whether this could be considered a surprise at all?
There are a lot of things for which people would choose controller over wagglestick any day.

After the "love it or hate it" reviews of Too Human, I would assume 50-70% of first month sales wouldn't be surprising. Do they have a target to make a sequel viable?
Congrats EA on improving on a formula and moving units!

@LittleBigPlaneteer: You mean the 100k that bought Too Human? ;)
@Strangelove: Joke.
@Boozerz: I'm an American football fan, but I won't be buying this game. I rented it for a week and really couldn't get into it. I think 05 was the best version. I said "suckers" jokingly, but also a bit truthfully as I really think it's not much different to 08.
On a side note, I'd like to see monthly updates to team and player attributes. For example Bears are scored as 80(?) overall, but they didn't play like an 80 against the Colts.

@loserguy:
It's true. They worked hard on that Wii version too and did their best to get it to appeal to the casual crowd. If this continues, it just means EA is going to dumb it down even further.
Hell, they might not even make a full fled-ged football game one day. I wouldn't be surprised if they made one big compilation title, sort of like Wii Sports with Football, Soccer, and whatever else on it. That would sell pretty well.

@loserguy: I can accept what you are saying. It is a very disturbing number. Madden sales on Xbox is nearly 10:1 ... Even the PS3 is nearly 6:1 (with less than half the install base of either)
Kinda leads the thought process to: "While the console might be popular, and Nintendo's software is definitely popular, people just aren't buying 3rd party software for it."

I find these low Wii Madden numbers disturbing. You can't fault EA for doing their best to create a truly unique experience on the platform, but given the popularity of the console (in sheer numbers) that it even outsold the Xbox 360 outright here in the US, EA can't be pleased with this.
Not a fanboy here (check my history), but its become increasingly apparent that a schism is forming between Wii users and your standard, core gamer. Although I'd like to comment that I've always put the Madden phenom in its own 'third tier' of gaming (always attracted just about everyone), its total rejection year after year on Nintendo's waggle-platform isn't a good sign.
Just saying...

Wow, I guess the PS3 is catching up. Xbox only outsold it by about 50% this time ( 1.5 to 1). American Xbox 360 consoles outnumber American PS3 consoles by at least 2 to 1.
That has gotta be good news for Sony. Shows that they are in strong competition.

@Rasz-42: True. You'd think if the developers put all their effort into the first game, they wouldn't get as much flak if they only minutely improved the sequel. Besides, if you're touting yourself to be a ridiculously creative developer, shouldn't you be able to make the first game everything you want it to be and be creative enough to come up with neat ideas for the sequel? :/

@jackinthexbox: it's not garbage. Play me or jackinthexbox and you won't be scoring that much. There's a lot of strategy that goes into it. You try to stop their offense and look for exploits in the defense. Plus they made it more real by forcing you to be quaterback. Now, I don't have much time in the pocket -unless I'm Peyton Manning (bastard O-line is ridiculous)- and I have to read the defense much quicker.
Trust me, I was on that FUCK EA bandwagon (it was justified...trust me), especially after they bought the license, considering 2K5 was a thing of beauty; but this is actually good.

@zanzibarlegend: yep Best madden in years (PS3 version). Not bad on the PS3 considering the install base relative to the 360. I think EA achieving parity contributes to that. I remember last year version....the ps3 version did very poor. I think that was due to the 30fps/60fps debacle that plagued EA forums.
Too Human...damn.
Guess it shows that just because you have a million downloads of the demo; it doesn't necessarily equate to great sales. I think DD might have had a hand on that one. Hopefully, he'll start on Eternal Darkness 2.

Madden 09 is garbage. Nothing at all exciting. No drama. No emotion. No atmosphere. No refs. No chain gang. No realistic injury animation. Just pick a play and watch the robot players over and over and over again. Nothing ever changes. You score, then I score, then you score, then i score, until the time runs out. Hell, you don't even recognize the coaches anymore. You hardly ever see them. EA sports pissed in your faces again. $60 wasted on a repetitively BORING caricature of football. Oh how I miss 2k sports making me feel like everything mattered when i played. The drama. The coaches getting angry on the sideline. The QB's throwing their helmets into the turf when they threw an interception. The emotion on the sideline in reaction to what was going on in the game. I miss the fun of video football. This is another poorly animated DEAD football game. Fuck Peter Moore. Fuck EA sports.

I don't know if this is something we should be proud of seeing as though Madden is the only licensed football game thanks to EA. Most gamers know that 2KSports had taken a large part of EA's football market and was on the edge of knocking them out of the running as number 1. (Anyone remember when 2K sold their game for $29.99 and EA was quick to drop Madden to $39.99. This was never done in the history of Madden) 2K caused EA execs to pull the wild card, C-A-S-H, and buy their way to the top.

Man, I'm am sorry for being disrespectful to you. I HATE Madden. This is a slap in the face to what could have been created in this generation of games. They have the ESPN license to go crazy with a simulated ESPN football presentation, with a full motion video Chris Berman, the whole gang. They have absolutely NO imagination whatsoever. It's like the EA sports team doesn't even watch football on Sunday. There is no one at EA sports with any kind of original ideas at all. And every year they charge $60 dollars for this lame ass, uninspired crap. I say bring back FMV in HD for pregame/halftime show presentation. Thats what bluray was made for!
Do SOMETHING to create excitement! Thats where 2K shined back in the day. They polished their shit with the little things that made you say "wow, I never saw that scene/animation before in the last 2 games I played". There is no "WOW" in madden. The QB looks like he shit his pants when he takes a step back to throw. Robotic looking shit. No fluidity. No women in the stadiums at all. no cutaways to anything resembling real fans at a game. Generic shit. You guys like paying for this kind of shit every year for another $60 dollars of your money in loyalty to Madden . I couldn't care if there was never another football game from EA sports ever. I'd still take 2k5 over this waste of a bluray disc. I would love for that guy who made METAL GEAR SOLID to make a MADDEN game before EA Sports ever attempted another one. Now THAT guy loves to make some engrossing games!

@loserguy: Well non-hardcore gamers (i.e. Wii owners) are less likely to pick up new games on release date. The initial sales for the Wii Madden may be low, but they will probably stay at that level for a while. Meanwhile, the 360 and PS3 versions will drastically drop off in sales.

Too Human continues the long SK tradition of games not selling big. But considering it had almost NO mainstream marketing whatsoever (not even a TV commercial, folks), I guess these numbers should be expected.
But ... I'm shockingly addicted to the game and can't stop playing it. Me and my cousin just recently started playing co-op for the first time and hit level 50 together and are now searching for Elite sets. And he just now realized about the Charm quests (the manual and even in game stuff is horrible in explaining the complexities of the game). People are missing out on this one and it honestly deserves better sales despite its flaws.

@jackinthexbox:
You know, I thought for a while that Madden 09 was decently fun, until I played the AI instead of my little brother. Suddenly, everything you're saying makes sense. With all the insane graphical power, dolby digital sound, and 60 some-odd gigabytes available to them on the disc, there could be SO MUCH going on that just isn't.
When I play Blitz: The League (not even supposed to be a "real" football game), injuries involve slow motion, an x-ray view of the damaged area, and a full diagnosis of what's wrong and how long I'll be dealing with it. In madden, sometimes I don't even see that anyone got injured until I look on the field and see a second string dude in the place of one of my all-star players.
Where's the slow motion upon fumbling, zooming into uneasy hands as the ball flies out in that second? Innovative POV's like the helmet cam from 2K? Where's the trash talking, the actual human-like emotion from the on screen players? How come I can't decide to deal with the penalty and just take out my anger by leveling someone well after the play is over?
I can picture so many possibilities in this generation. Even being able to zoom into the perspective of a wide receiver after selecting him, using a stick to turn his head towards an airborne ball and really "making" the catch would be just one of many possible things available to developers and to players if EA actually had a love for electronic gaming as a medium, and saw beauty, authenticity, emotion, and immersion in their series' future, as opposed to dollar signs. jackinthebox, you have opened my eyes.

I don't get it. Madden has always been the game for casual and core gamers. I'm amazed that it just can't move that much Wii software.
