Midway Confirms MK vs. DCU Cast Leak
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:30 AM on September 12, 2008
In case there was any doubt that the full Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe roster revealed earlier today was in error, case those doubts aside. Midway has confirmed that Shao Kahn, Darkseid, Baraka and Lex Luthor will be rounding out the 22-character strong cast of the fighter, probably ahead of the publisher's planned schedule. With just two months to go before MK vs. DCU is released, will they find another way to respark our interest in the game? Surely they've got one or two hidden characters squirreled away in all that code.

22 characters for a cross over game is weak sauce.
I mean, I wasn't going to buy this game anyways, but if this was some type of alternate universe where Mortal Kombat games have an actual deep and balanced fighting engine, I WOULD BE PISSED!

I could have sworn that there was an interview with one of the members of the developing team that Doomsday was going to be a playable character.
Hmmm...good list of characters, but I'd still have loved to see Doomsday or Lobo on the DCU side instead of Luther. Hell, definitely would have loved seeing Harley Quinn.

There are fatalities and brutalities in the game. Kotaku posted a video of Joker's fatality a little while ago.

I don't see the problem with the roster size. For a new game developed on a new engine, 22 characters is a lot. The original Marvel vs Capcom had even less than that, around 16 I think. Once they have a solid game play foundation in place they can then focus on adding more characters for the sequel, if there is one.

@nitromic: Well you not playing the game might not be such a bad thing. That leaves the chance of me bumping into you on online play and hearing your negative comments about the game at a 0% chance.
Teen, M, what ever as long as the games combat system is back to its roots I'm more than happy to play this game.
I'm no longer a 10 year old playing mortal kombat for its fatality's like I did when it first came in the arcade back in 92. I'm an adult who is looking for a fighting game thats brings fun back into mortal kombat and with the addition of DC cast members and the game doesn't look crappy.
If i have to sacrifice over abundant grotesque fatality's and special moves for a better fighting system to the game so be it I'm more than willing to play this game with a teen rating so long as I'm having fun with it instead of pure shock valure.

Yeah it was around 15 characters with a few unlockables. So in a way 22 is a step up but it's also being done with a new engine. I'm sure if a sequel is made it will have probably double that. Plus this day an age there is this thing called downloadable content, so when all is said it done this game could have upward of 30 characters if midway really decides churns out the DLC.

@Stevetrop: I have been a Mortal Kombat fan since the original. The combo system I once loved has been butchered and is barely there in the new ones. Sure it has some of the characters and moves, but I always played the new Mortal Kombat's for over-the-top gore and violence. I liked the controversy behind the games and the violence was always a very big part of that series for me. So without the trademark beheadings and spinal rips, it just isn't the Mortal Kombat I know and love.
Also to Kable, yes I saw their weak example of a fatality "Look he blows her head off!" and by blowing off you mean shooting her in the head and then having a bit of blood come out qualifies as blowing off? Watering down a series or even a movie for that matter can ruin the experience and atmosphere previously established. Look at the new Die Hard, the unrated edition is leaps and bounds better then the McClane edited fest of the theater version. Sorry to rant, but these kind of sell-out plans piss me off.

@nitromic: Since you have been playing the game so long you should know how the game franchises EVOLVES. No game series sticks constantly true to its original starting way of game play. If that was the cast then final fantasy would have a western rpg dungeons and dragons rpg rule setting like the first one did.
This was a turn that midway decided to take on the road of the Mortal Kombat franchise to add some new things to the series. People should hold out and play the game instead of getting preconceived notions that the game will blow hard because "superman is in it".
The fact that Mortal Kombat has always had gore in it is all fine and dandy but have you ever thought what if by chance this turn to making it a teen rated will let them focus more on the fighting system, combo, and the move system as opposed to making it look more bloody.
The fact is the people who bitch and complain about this game before ever playing it because it isn't M rated need to grow up. I can understand if you played the game and said it sucked and didn't want to buy it. If you just go buy some online pictures or a quick video and said the game sucks balls because you can't rip a guys back bone out you need to evaluate your self as a gamer and grow the fuck up.

I'm gonna say I think two months is too little to add in extra characters unless they have some without achievements. Or maybe the achievement list isn't complete. It doesn't really matter to me, the cast sounds good so far.

@spacecoffin2:
Sandman is Marvel
@TheeAhaMoment:
Johnny Cage sucks.
@Hollowcow:
They don't need 4 Batman characters.
@Artdeux:
Who?
@Senji:
You're wrong. Nobody ever confirmed Doomsday. I would say you're confusing him with Darkseid, but no one confirmed him either until today.
@Aethyr:
Are you being sarcastic? It seems like you are, but there are actually people who would rather have more characters than game balance, so it's hard to tell.
@AJMarra:
I'm pretty sure that's all the characters. The hidden characters are Shao Kahn and Darkseid.
@kable:
People think that just because games like Soul Calibur 4 have over 30 characters, all fighting game should. They don't realise that the reason Soul Calibur 4 can do that is because it's the exact same game as Soul Calibur 3 and a lot of the characters are clones.
And people are only complaining to jump on the hate Mortal Kombat band wagon. I guarantee you there won't be these many complaints when Street Fighter 4 comes out with less than 20 characters.

it's not like we expect every fighting game to have 50+ characters nowadays. it's cross-over fighting games that are to have a high character count these days. see: smash bros., any Snk/Marvel/Capcom/Namco vs. games.

Clones? Like the characters in MK vs DC (or previous MK titles) aren't? With Batman and Scorpion sharing the same moves, fighting stances and voiceovers? A good majority of the DC character moveset's consist of reused animations from MKA. Now if each character in MK vs DC actually reacted, played and controlled different, then there wouldn't be an issue. But a roster of 22 is ridiculous for a game in which places so little emphasis on its fighter's characteristics.
The MK games are the kings when it comes to their rosters consisting of typically clones. If you've ever played MKA, you'd know.

Doesn't matter, the game still looks subpar for a 2008 fighting game.
Maybe their next marketing ploy could consist of revealing characters with revamped animation and differentiated stances...
Maybe?

MKvsDC has more starting characters then MvC had when you unlocked everyone, and all the unlockables sans 1 or 2 were just move clones.
