PS3 BioShock Demo Out On October 2
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on September 12, 2008
What, PS3 owners, you never played BioShock on 360 or PC? Not even for a minute? How the hell are you meant to make an informed purchasing decision without some hands-on time with the game and? How the hell indeed. You're getting a demo, and you're getting it soon, with 2K announcing that one will be made available "worldwide" on October 2. Before you scramble for a calendar, that's just under three weeks away.

Does anybody know whether the australian version of bioshock on ps3 is the same as the other area's version or it has been modified due to the special situation in australia?
Thanks.

Bioshock on the 360 is arguably one of my favourite games of all time, if not for the ending. Lets just hope they changed it for the PS3, i doubt it mind

Good game if you haven't played it yet. I bought it originally on the Steamy goodness.

I honestly don't know why this is still Kotaku material.
PS3 is getting a 360/PC port with some minor add-ons. Good for them. PS3 owners get a great game. The PS3 has more power than the 360 and *most* PC's so it will look a little better. Not epic orgasmic. The add-ons could always be downloadable on the 360/PC in the future.
/discussion.

Wait...wait...are people here seriously discussing whether or not the PlayStation 3 demo is "enhanced" or merely a "port" of the PC version?

Maybe they will "enhance" the shitty endings. It's like a Ferrari running out of gas on the last hill.

@AssassinTRIP: It's still Kotaku material because PS3 owners would like to know when and if a demo is being released. This seems like exactly the kind of thing Kotaku should be posting. I like to know when demo's come out so I don't have to check the store every 24 hours to make sure I don't miss something.

If anything, I'm curious how well the PS3 version matches up to the 360 version. I bet programmers had a hell of a time using the "power" of the PS3.

Does anyone know what is the native resolution of Bioshock on the PSĀ£? Is it running natively at 720p or is some horrid scaling going on?

Am I the only one that was dissapointed with Bioshock? I mean I liked all the elements of the game, but then the core gameplay felt cumbersome having to go to vending machine's and make decisions on what to buy just seemed really annoying and frustrating.

@Phazon: You aren't the only one disappointed I'm sure, but you may win for 'longest sentence'.
I already own this on the 360 but I am interested to see how this one looks, if at all better. Maybe they'll have a LE with slightly more resistant Big Daddies? I think that myself and a friend were the only two people out of dozens that we knew whose Big Daddies remained intact.

@AssassinTRIP: Why does your post seem so bitter? This article is definitely news worthy for Kotaku. Your post sounds like a 360 fanboy's disappointment in a loss of an exclusive.

@jBusiness: I was dissapointed with Bioshock is so much that it wasn't the game I was expecting it to be. This supposed "spiritual sequel" to one of the best games ever made, System Shock 2, was, in reality, not. SS2 is a glorious, incredibly atmospheric FPS-RPG that has yet to be topped, in my opinion.
Bioshock was an extremely well made FPS with some atmosphere, comparatively. I was hoping it would be an FPS-RPG like its predecessor, but Irrational/2K Boston stripped out all of the great RPG elements, in what I personally feel was a move to simplify the game for a console release.

@Phazon: Yes, you are the only one. It has its flaws and terrible endings but overall it's an amazing game, especially for the atmosphere and the attention to details. Don't see the need for a PS3 version though.

@Phazon: No you're not the only one, and since it's 4:40am and I'm hopped up on carnitas and purified water - I'm going to explain why I was disappointed in detail.
Let's start with the story, because that was what was hyped to be so great in this game, and I don't think it was even above average. I played through the game picking up all the recorders and watching all the cut scenes, I was paying attention to the story - and well before the big office scene I already knew how the story would play out to the end. What was really disappointing, was that not only was I essentially correct on all major points, but the details I couldn't predict turned out to be boring. Sadly, with a slightly different direction at a few key points, the story could have shined like a beacon of goodness - instead it fell short into an oily sea of mediocrity. The "twists" were hackneyed, I've read/watched the same things in dozens of middling books and movies.
And let's talk about the Randian undertones ... you know the ones that were just sort of plastered on willy-nilly with little actual meaning to the world or the overall story. But that has a bit to do with the development of the game environment, and atmosphere.
A lot of people talk up the atmosphere - underwater, crumbling city, it sounds great. Except that you could have replaced underwater with outerspace, and crumbling city with decrepit space station, and then it turns out to be just like every other FPS game I've played. Well, with an art deco paint job slapped on.
One of the big problems here was the lack of life in the city. The recorders and such talk about a city of people going about their daily lives, but what you see as a player is a lot of enemies waiting (or roaming about looking for you) to attack you. There was never a sense that the NPCs in the game were anything more than targets. If you want to talk about atmosphere, try STALKER that actually integrates all the pieces of the world to present of complete atmosphere that just rocks.
The biggest flaw though was the gameplay mechanics and feel. I've played a LOT of FPS games, and there is always a slightly different feel in the way your character moves, and the aim of weapons; the overall texture of your interactions with the game. Bioshock was sloppy, the UEngine has had problems with a sense of floatiness in movement since UT2k3, and Bioshock held onto it, so it always felt a little bit disconnected from the movement of the character.
The weapons didn't feel solid, especially the tommy gun and the launcher (though the revolver was decent.) The aiming system always made me feel like I was trying to aim a live snake. I ended up killing most things with plasmoids and the wrench.
Oh yea, plasmoids those were fun. The few that were ever worth using. Fire, ice, lightning, and love potion #9... was there anything else?
Overall, it wasn't Daikatana levels of fail, but I certainly don't think it lived up to the level of the contemporary competition, COD4 and STALKER were both a good bit better, and I would even give Crysis an edge just because the Crysis game mechanics were superior. As for reaching the level of a truly great FPS, like the original Unreal? Not even in the same zip code.
Not to say there weren't good parts of the game - the whole section to complete the quadtych was quite good.

The pre-rendered ending sequences, and lack of more depth in the RPG elements was the only let-downs for me. I own the LE on 360, but think I will be renting the PS3 version, just to see what they have changed...
Also lets see if SCEE bother to stick the demo on the PAL store

@The_Inquisitor: The "aiming a live snake" comparison rings true with me. I played this game for an hour or so on a friend's 360 and I felt like my aiming was all over the place. I had just beaten resistance twice on superhuman, so I know it wasn't me, and an hour should have been plenty of time for me to adjust to the different mechanics of that game. Anyone else notice the weapons/aiming feeling "slippery" in bioshock?

I just played the demo on my brand new PC last night and man, I had no idea that game was so...horror oriented. The first enemy i saw looked like a fuckin shibito from Siren. WTF? That scared the shit out of me and made me want to stay safely inside the capsule.
The game looked amazing on my new rig though! Makes me think maybe I should play it on PC instead of PS3. Still, I'll get the demo so I can compare and see the difference between a PS3 and a really expensive computer.

I played the demo on my computer. Well, played is a strong word for it, I mostly got by it, chugging at 10 frames per second mostly. It was seeing a bioshock PowerPoint presentation. I will download this to play it "somewhat" the right way, as I still can't aim with a joystick even if my life depended on it

@Kaneda: You will only be dissappointed playing it on the PS3 version after playing it on "a really expensive computer." You just made the PS3 version obsolete. Trust me. The 360 version is absolutely amazing looking and still can't even touch how it looks on a kick ass pc. It's like comparing SD and HD. Some people care about it more than others i guess.

@wtf007: I see. That's pretty much what I imagined. I guess I will now buy all my FPS games on PC, but I will still get other games on PS3. I'm not so sure for Mirrors Edge though. I want the crispness of my PC, but I'd rather play that with the Dualshock3.

@sex-target: Actually, when I played the demo on the 360, that's exactly what I thought. The aim was off, and the controls (weapon switching mostly) was crap. I was not impressed. As a Rand fan, I wanted to play it for the scenery and to see how the philosophy presented and elaborated.
After playing the full game I was pretty amazed, and it really did overcome my misgivings that I had about the demo.

@sex-target: I started to write a long rebuttal @The_Inquisitor: but realized I just don't share his tastes. I do think, removing the blinders of sentimental bias, that bioshock (aside from rpg elements) is in every way a more mature and interesting game(including story/plot/characters/setting) than System Shock 2.
The weapons in Bioshock are cobbled together out of found objects. They felt correct to me. But they were a bit tricky at times.
Combat felt rough in the game, especially with the big daddies. A bit tedious and unfair/unfun.
The inhabitants are mostly scavengers and predators now, they would be hiding and scavenging, which is what most of them are doing.
Keep in mind that games still have quite a ways to go to reach movies and literature, and they have different goals. I would say Video Games have a much harder time than books or movies, and far more things to be concerned about. I don't think anyone was terribly shocked at the plot twists in BS, but I think they were handled well, and I don't know of too many other games that have better thought out stories.
There are flaws to be sure, but I'd rather play something akin to bioshock than another zombie/alien/marine game. If anything I saw bioshock's success as a refreshing thing, as SS2 wasn't that huge a success, and it gives hope for better games being produced. A step in the right direction.

@Ehardergardens:
I agree and hope in the future more games with depth and literary/cinematic elements will be produced. E.g., I would love the Wachowski brothers to direct a game. (Am I asking too much?!) Perhaps amy tastes are more mature, but I'm turned off when there is a lack of "deeper meaning" in games such as Valve's Left 4 Dead. I hope that many video games in the future move beyond mere thrill rides.

This actually does appeal to me; my computer couldn't run the PC demo because my graphics card wasn't supported, and since I don't have a 360, one of my friends would have had to get it - and none did. I was never that hyped about Bioshock to begin with, though, so maybe this will change that.
