Alone in the Dark on PS3 - If it Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It
Posted by AJ Glasser at 12:00 AM on September 13, 2008
And if it is, fix the hell out of it.
That's exactly what developer Eden Games did following the overwhelming bitch storm that followed the PC and 360 release of the much-anticipated Alone in the Dark. We all know the story: fiddly controls, broken gameplay mechanics and a truly agonizing root-hunting sequence that gets sprung on you towards the end of the game all added up to a mediocre action/horror experience most gamers were content to skip.
"It's not like we pretended we made the perfect game," said game designer Emile Morel as I sat down for some hands-on with the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark. "We read reviews... We wanted to make it better."
They haven't changed the plot, mind you - so any beef you had with the implausibility of the story or the lameness of the setting will still be valid. But, I can say after only twenty minutes of playtime, that Alone in the Dark on PS3 really is better. A lot better. Which is damned impressive considering Eden only had four months of turnaround time between the 360 and PS3 release (so for once, we should be grateful that the PS3 dev cycle takes longer).
The biggest improvement is the camera. It's pulled farther back so you can see more and you control it with the right analogue stick, as God intended. Even better, it automatically repositions itself behind you as you move, so you don't have to babysit the camera while rounding corners or targeting enemies.
Oh yeah, about targeting... With the right stick being given over to the camera, you have to hold down L1 in order to manipulate the objects or weapons Edward Carnby picks up with the right analogue stick. This is a bonus, actually, because L1 also targets enemies, so it's like having a Grand Theft Auto style of combat instead of that senseless flailing from the 360 version. (Also, Morel says the targeting system automatically chooses the most dangerous foe - a real plus, if he's telling the truth.)
In addition to combat changes, Carnby's overall movements have been redone so that gameplay is much, much smoother. His turns are tighter, he never walks backwards, and his default speed is running so you don't have to hold down a button to haul arse. This carries over into the first person view as well, so expect less eyestrain as you pan around looking for enemies.
The enemies themselves have also been fiddled with such that the weapon you use on them actually matters. The bigger the stick you hit the monster with, the less times you have to hit it. And baddies fall down more easily now, so you can torch them that much easier.

Speaking of torching - the inventory system got all the attention it needed. No more stupid menu scrolling ("Do you really want to drop this item... are you sure?"), and they've gotten rid of the battery pack so you've got more space to work with. (Really, unless Carnby's packing dollar store flashlights, he should be able to get through one night of terror in New York City on a single set of batteries.) Combining items is way easier since now you don't have to select the correct items in order (bottle before lighter or lighter before bottle?), and the game now pauses when you enter the inventory screen so you actually have time to be creative with the combos. The pausing also allowed Eden to change the way you manoeuvre through the inventory - now you can go from left to right or right to left, one item at a time with a simple tap of the D-pad.
Also, and Morel got a little testy when he told me this, the hot key combo option is still available so you don't even have to go into the inventory to get out your favourite weapon set. Still - as in, you could do this on the 360 version, but apparently people didn't know that and complained bitterly about how hard it was to get out the Molotov cocktails and handgun over and over again.
They didn't fix that loading screen that says "cloth in a bottle is the best way to make a Molotov cocktail" - as far as I know, that's the only way to make a Molotov cocktail, and I'd have so bugged that if I'd been testing this game.
Thank God I wasn't though, because I would have died of agony if I had to do the driving levels over and over again. Even now that they've fixed some of the issues with driving in Alone in the Dark, I still suck at it. But I am glad they slowed down the monster chasing you in the getting to Central Park sequence. Insta-death is never a good thing. Also, they've tweaked the handling and collision issues so you're not fishtailing every time you get too close to the curb - and added a checkpoint halfway through the level.
The last - and perhaps most glaring - issue Eden got around to fixing was that root-burning sequence. Instead of dumping it on you towards the end of the game, the quest is introduced in Chapter 3 and you have the whole rest of the game to get around to it instead of having to go back and burn them all before you can finish the game. And the percentage of roots you need to burn to complete the quest has been lowered from 75% to 50%, so really, this is going to be a lot less aggravating.
Ultimately, Eden wanted to make Alone in the Dark on PS3 a game you could enjoy without getting hung up on technical issues. There're still going to be problems, of course - four months isn't enough time to fix everything, and some things aren't bugs at all. For example, there was some griping about the survival-horror aspect of the game being muddled. Morel tells me that Alone in the Dark isn't even supposed to be survival-horror - it's intended as action-adventure.
As if to drive that point home, a new section has been added to Chapter 6 exclusively for the PS3 version. I don't want to give too much away - but imagine that scene from Jurassic Park where the T-Rex is chasing the Jeep had sex with the ending scene in Speed on the subway train. It's the baby of that (and that's why you always use protection, kids).
So I say to you jaded gamers and to any other journalists who might be perusing this piece (get back to work, you bums): give Alone in the Dark on PS3 a chance to stand on its own. Pretend you never set eyes on the 360 version. And journos - do not copy-paste your old review and add a mere paragraph describing all of the effort Eden put in to making the PS3 version a better game. That's cheating.
Alone in the Dark on PS3 ships in November.
P.S. - Sadly, there won't be any Trophies at launch. Eden was anxious to get this game out the door on-time; but they're totally open to doing a patch sometime in the very near future.

I also read that they'd fixed the apparently-terrible car sequence, and added a checkpoint in the middle?
I'll read the reviews for the PS3 version carefully. I might pick this game up next year, when releases slow down. Certainly not this fall, though.
"(and that's why you always use protection, kids)"
Every time I read/hear a sentence that starts with "and that's why you...", I can't help but think of the One-Armed Man's lessons from Arrested Development. Oh, how I miss the Bluths and the Fünkes...
Back to the topic, it's commendable that Atari should put so much work into fixing the game when there's honestly not much hope that this will turn it into a success. (Commendable, even though it can be argued that the "fixed version" should have been the only version.)

It's really nice to know that some devs actually admit their faults so soon after accusations have been made and not only admit to them but make sure to fix them.

I don't agree with a lot of the comments here. They're not fixing and re-releasing the game on 360 and PC. They're just making it better for the PS3 because they f'd it up the first time around. If they willingly admit that they released a shit game the first time around, they should be giving partial refunds to those gamers that did buy their shit game.
So, no, I don't commend these assholes for essentially using the market as a replacement for their bad quality control. Screw Eden Games. I will forever boycott all of their games from this point on. Nice job, idiots. Maybe you should have done the work the first time around.

I was so hyped for this game and got it day 1 on 360. The AITD series is one of my favorite series and they just ruined it with this game. We as gamers dont deserve this half assed treatment by anyone. No matter what game console you prefer we do not deserve games coming out with such horrible bugs, glitches, poor control schemes. I wouldnt even recommend PS3 gamers buy this game at all.

The gameplay wasn't broken, though it definitely was NOT great.
That said, I can't wait till the 360 patch comes out. I liked it enough as is, but the patch sounds like a much more fun experience. Now if only the patch could change the juveniley-vulgar script :\

Too little too late.
I had a friend download the demo on the 360 and he thought it was a sweet game. I haven't tried it myself, but I told him how reviews were ripping it apart. Maybe I should of convinced him to get it, at the very least I could of got some achievements. But it is hard to force yourself to play a game that has flaws.

It's a shame they're not fixing the ending - the ending of the game on 360 was absolutely preposterous, and totally felt wrong whichever choice you made. It was a lose-lose, and it felt wrong. It was a cliffhanger without any real sense of suspense. It just left you hanging going "WTF?".

So the real question is, will they be doing a title update to the 360 version since they've in essence released 'Alone in the Dark: broken edition for 360' and 'Alone in the Dark: not rushed edition for PS3'?
If not, that's a hell of a kick in the teeth for 360 owners from Atari. But then Atari gave us Driv3r, so I guess it's to be expected...

Congrats, developers! Acknowledging a problem is 50% of the way towards crafting a solution.
Too bad the Kane & Lynch developers are still in denial and pointing fingers at critics, but that's the subject of another thread, so I won't comment further here.

You know what, with this I think I see a future market for an independent game testing division. Professional reviewers turned into professional game development doctors. Rather than just internal play testers, or a random selection of people brought in to test the game for a bit, it'd be a real team with years of game design/review experience fresh and ready to call out a game's bullshit before it gets released.
If developers could read the reviews for their games before their games came out, we might all be better off. (Then again, I guess that's what previews are for. But lookit what happened with Too Human.)

Nice! The 360 was decent, and I enjoyed it besides the ending which was madness. But a lot of the game did feel like I was enjoying what they were trying to do, rather than what they did actually accomplish. Now it looks like you don't have to make the jump of reality to enjoy it.
Which is fantastic.

I really commend developers who take steps like this to attempt to drastically improve the games that they have already released. I mean, sure, it could have happened before release, but it didn't, yet they are still dedicated enough individuals to continue on with their quest to make the game enjoyable for gamers by fixing up some of the problems cited by pretty much all of the critics out there.

I still haven't played this game at all, but I've heard that there are a lot of really cool ideas hidden inside a poorly designed game. If a lot of these designs have been reconsidered and altered to make the experience more enjoyable, I'll probably take a look at the PS3 version to see what all the hubbub is about. It's also a good excuse to use the word hubbub.

@stradric: You can't have it both ways; either a game is delayed forever and made to shine, or its rushed out on time and has flaws. Half of the things they fixed in this weren't bugs, but design flaws, and beta testing doesn't always help you reveal a flawed design. If you bought their shitty game without reading reviews or checking to see how anyone else thought about it, that's on you; knowledge is power, the more you know, all that jazz.
Game devs aren't intentionally out to malign you; you just sometimes can't tell that a feature or element is stupid, because working on projects like these for years makes you extremely myopic. They took feedback from users and made it so the next group doesn't have to go through that. Give them a break.
I get mildly frustrated that PS3 owners have to wait for games because devs are leading with the 360 and not developing concurrently;the consequence is that there are plenty of games that come out for the Red Ringer that I have to wait forever to play. To me, it's only fair if I have to arbitrarily wait to experience it that people go back and give me added value for my wait.
Again, you can't have it both ways; get the game half a year/ a year ahead and get it fresh with whatever is in there at launch, or wait a year after everyone spoils you about the experience but get a more polished release.

Senseless flailing... I haven't played AitD yet, but for some reason, that reminded me of HL2... Whenever I fight th head crabs with the crowbar, I'm reminded that were I really doing this in real life, I'd have knocked them all down already, at least the ones in front of me, but since I have this confusing and inconsistent aiming system, I think I'm aiming at them and it seems to miss them every time.
Still, though... A game that was promised to all systems... If only we get the fixed one (of which I'd be grateful if I had any money to play it) that doesn't quite seem fair to the people like my friend who bought the 360 version and regret it like I regretted Lair... I mean, if Lair had gotten fixed up for release on 360 after I already bought it on PS3, I'd have been severely pissed.

It's too bad that gamers are continually glass half empty. Instead of looking at this as a bonus to PS3 players for having to wait, it will be misconstrued into some sort of betrayal to 360 players for giving them an unfinished product.
Such is the nature of the game industry, we gripe about delays and then get pissed off when they release a product with bugs.
This is simply a matter of them retooling a game that was basically a flop, into something less of a flop in order to sell some copies. All the reviews of this game would keep people from buying it, I think its great that they have this opportunity. It's a developers dream really, to have an extension on a fully reviewed product and to go back and make changes. Xbox users really shouldn't be griping so much, you got the game faster and as a result you got it flawed. It just goes to show that we've sacrificed a very important step of game creation (consumer testing) because the masses just don't have the patience to wait for that perfect game anymore. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

my first conspiracy thoughts, this is proof of Phil Harrison's bias for Sony, he allowed the terrible version on the 360 and then fixed the bugs for the PS3 so it's the superior version ...
anyways, i just wonder if the game developers actually had someone vet the game before it released or were they forced to release it in the condition it was in. Would it have hurt to delay the game in some way for the 360 and fix it and negate the bad press and sales they ended up getting?

If they bring the changes to pc and 360 then great well done. If they don't then seriously I hope they close down as a developer as that is treating the people that bought the PC and 360 versions (which kept them afloat to improve the ps3 version) like absoulute trash. I didn't buy the 360 or PC version but if I did and these changes didn't come to it I would be furious.
I heard they were working on a patch but it isn't mentioned here in what seems like a pretty full write up.
@ReignFury: For games like Bioshock where the added content is so minor and the delay so long, nope I definetly prefer it earlier. However this is something different, they aren't adding a bonus level or mode. They are redoing the gameplay majorly and also altering the flow of the game.
I may actually consider getting it on Ps3 if the reviews are good or there is a good demo.

@meltyman: If anything, I would think Phil Harrison might be a little bitter towards Sony. Also, this is a business and if he wants to keep his job, he can't keep letting Atari release turds like Alone in the Dark.

I'm going to agree with the rest of the posters and say that if the 360 version isn't fixed I'm going to write a polite email to Atari saying that once again, I'm never buying anything they make because of how bad their quality control is.
The thing about Alone in the Dark is that it does have some great things going for it, like amazing fire physics and some neat game-play features like the "Last time on AITD" I'd like to see other developers (especially RPG developers) copy that feature as it made it a lot easier to remember what I was doing the last thought it might be worth giving it another try...

Somehow I think they wont be heeding.

That's really...cool. Wonder if they'll decide to make a huge patch for the 360 and PC versions.

@Keilwerth-LA: Really? You found it that bad? It was flawed sure, but worst is strong... Maybe you're just lucky and don't play many games that aren't excellent (that's not sarcasm btw, despite how it sounds).
Encouraging they're doing this, I really enjoyed it, but hopefully the patch will get applied across the board (don't mind about extra content).

I played the 360 version. I didn't think it was as bad as everyone made it out to be.
The control issues WERE my biggest complaint though, as was the combat at times. It usually just felt like using flaming bullets was the ideal solution to everything.
Oh...and I kind of liked the root quest part. It gave me more of a chance to explore Central Park and get into more battles. Now, if only those battles had been a bit less aggravating...

@gencid: Good point. Harrison might be doing his part to make sure the PS3 gets special treatment from his new company.

I think, that if Eden releases a demo, and played as better has they says; the sales might boost a little more on the PS3 version.

Seriously...too many PS3 games as is. This is killing me. I'm officially overloaded.
If this one gets the proper rework, it would make it the 9th game I'm excited to get this year. That is not good for my wallet.

I wouldn't wish any of you a QA stint with this game. All you armchair testers... it wasn't that bugs weren't written; there were just far too many of them - major, minor, and in-between (yes, Ashcroft, including loading screen text bugs)... I think the technical term for a project like this is "clusterfuque".

No. Just no. That is repulsive. To have released a game with so many issues and then just "patch them away" is ridiculous. I bought the game on launch day, thinking the reviews must have been overreacting and I returned it in a week.
I can't believe the utter audacity. Atari should never expect to see my money again.

Good Lord, I haven't played the 360 version but reading all the fixes they made for the PS3 makes me wonder why this game was ever released.
"It's not like we pretended we made the perfect game," said game designer Emile Morel
I don't think they even tried let alone pretended.

The biggest improvement is the camera. It's pulled farther back so you can see more and you control it with the right analog stick
Did you hear that Too Human?!

Sounds like the PS3 will not add spikes on our controllers toturing us as we play this game. Hope the fixes will allow the lots of their good and innovative gameplay that preexisted to shine through. In that case I will be sold.

i'm glad they are finally fixing the game, with a patch for the 360 and a fixed version for the ps3. The only thing is that i've already done everything in the game which i got off of gamefly. It will be so much easier to get achievements on the fixed version, i remember doing and redoing some section just for a stupid 10 g achievement. I hope more people decide to play, i had a lot of fun with it, so i can only imagine how much better this one should be

I've been looking for a good horror game this generation. Silent Hill V looks like glorified fan fiction, haven't tried Siren but I didn't like the original and Condemned 2 just seemed a bit meh. And now they're telling me Alone in the Dark isn't horror anymore? Come on guys, I can't keep playing Doom 3 forever.

I've got conflicting feelings on this. On the one hand, I was really, really pumped for the Alone in the Dark reboot. On the other hand, I got burned bad by the XB360 version. I wanted to like it really bad, but as soon as I hit the second phase of the 'root hunting' mission ("Hey, good work! You did that 6 times. That took like 3 hours, huh? And the game wouldn't save in the middle, so you had to do it 15 times! Well, now go do it 30 more.") I got straight FED UP.
On the one hand, Alone in the Dark was an ambitious game, with a lot of cool features that obviously needed a couple extra months in the cooker before release. And now, the PS3 version has gotten that extra time.
On the other hand, I've already paid $60 for this game once, and I dislike giving a publisher a 'do-over' on a game that disappointed me so much.
Bottom line, if you haven't played the XB360 version, you're in luck. If you DID play the 360 game, and you REALLY love Alone in the Dark and want to give it another chance, you're in luck.
Me? I packed up my things and went to go stay at my mother's house after Alone in the Dark gave me the first black eye. (Ok... black eye, broken rib, and 15 stitches.) I won't be going back, no matter how many flowers AiTD sends.

AWESOME.
I'm quite glad they've decided to go for a do over, and fix everything that made me despise the game in the first place. at $60, though, it may be too late for many users that allready bought the 360 version.
Gotta give em a B+ for effort though.

@romano.cule: First of all, they promised a patch (kinda weird that nobody here seems to know that as every gaming news side did that story).
And while the meaning is obscured by your lack of formulating correct sentences, what remains is wrong on so many levels. You complain that there is no pirated copy available because Atari has an agreement with pirate groups. Ok, you gave me a chuckle with the stupidity of you statement ...
