Atari Gamer's Day Roundup
Posted by AJ Glasser at 10:20 AM on September 13, 2008
September is turning out to be a hell of a month. A hurricane is heading for my homestead, my dental appointment got pushed to the morning after the Atari event and Atari fell the day after the Guitar Hero event I'm not allowed to talk about until next week. Which happens to be right when I start Stanford.
I'm going to go suck on a bunch of ice cubes to still the raging throb of agony that is my mouth and then call my mum. Here's everything I got out of Atari...
Alone in the Dark on PS3 - If It's Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It
Hands On: Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World - Gah! Too Many Colons!
Hands On: What's Cooking? With Jamie Oliver
Hands On: Dragon Ball Origins DS
Hands On: RACE Pro
Hands On: Backyard Football 09
Have a good (dry) weekend!

AJ, I'm guessing you're not in Galveston, because 1)You wouldn't have power 2)You'd be dead.
I'm chilling out at the hangar my dad works from, with some other people from his work. We have a generator, so I'm good to go.
Happy Hurricane Day.

Blergh, can I get a do over on this year?
I've had one relative die and one friend pass away, another friend who is seriously ill get dumped by her partner, my mother breaking her leg in three places,I've developed a blind spot in one eye and I found out yesterday that I have to have two of my front teeth removed because they were damaged in an accident when I was young and are now dead.
I can sympathize with your dentistry pain.

Gah!, my relatives also took a safe haven; I am being told that Ike is not fucking around. Be safe and smoke some Ganja; it is the panacea to all ailments.
Oh right, I will be your "Sun Bae", Class of '02.

I'm hunkered down in Houston. It's rapidly growing very creepy. All of our windows are boarded up so its been dark in here for a while. I've got my DS plugged in and fully charged, prepared for the power outage. All we can do is sit and wait. It's gonna be Picross, Tetris and NSMB till I blow away.
My thoughts go out to everyone else hunkered down in the area. (including your homestead, AJ)

I'm sitting in Dallas, and although Ike will be down to tropical storm levels by the time it reaches us, that's still strong enough to bring down trees...and there's a lot of BIG trees around my home.
I pruned some of the more troubling branches, and moved my patio furniture indoors. Oh, and I bought batteries for the flashlight.
One other thing. I've been in a hurricane (in Hawaii) and let me tell you, these things don't dick around. As with tornadoes, you'll step outside thinking everything is fine, only to realize the house next door is in pieces or your neighborhoods missing half it's trees. Stay inside, and be safe.

My biggest worry is Braes Bayou - it's right by my mom's house. She went to Spring for higher ground, but that's right by a bunch of creeks, ugh.
And my grandparents refused to evacuate. But they're by 59, where drainage is pretty solid, so here's hoping.

@Floral: I'm in Houston as well, we didn't get to put boards in the windows but we got some tape to give us some sort of sense of security. I got a DS and a PSP all charged up as well.
I hope you and everyone else in the area go through this allright.

It's not like it's that strong of a storm. Fl gets pounded all of the time by stronger storms, and you guys rarely get hit. Consider yourself lucky.

In College Station. Not gonna be as bad as a place like Houston, but we will get stuff here.

Hey, I can see where I live on the map. Umm, why is there a thick black line running right over my house? Wow, it sure is windy outside.

I'm on the west side of Houston... cable's out so I'm watching a DVD of The Office. I was playing some 360 earlier but I fear a power outage in the middle of an unsaved game or something. It's not too bad here yet. Be safe everybody! (DS, laptop, and cell phone are all charged!)

In a tip about generator use in the case of a blackout, the weather man just urged the audience to only plug in the necessities. "You don't want to plug in your Wii as it might use the power you need for other appliances."

Oddly enough, it comes right through where I am too... and I'm in Arkansas. Everyone stay safe in the storm, okay?
The ickle black line isn't through were I live, but the white bit is... I think it's time for me to stock up on cashews and sodas.

I live in Houston, but had to relocate to College Station for the storm(our company's disaster recovery site is there). I've been at Rentsys for the last 18 hours getting servers ready just in case the power is out in Houston for an extended period. Stay dry everybody! Watch out for bears.

It's been 8.5 hours since anyone else in Houston commented... I guess I'm the only one still with power? I'm south of the Med Center inside South 610 - Ike hit us like Tina Turner for a good 8 hours overnight with 70-80 mph winds and heavy rain, but somehow, miraculously, I didn't lose power even for a second!
Ill have you know that out of moral allegiance to my fellow gamers who are sweating and without power right now, I'm refusing to turn on the ps3 ...... for at least a few hours today.

In DFW things are getting a little gusty, but the high winds expected in a few hours. I'd also like to hear from the Houston area peeps, see how everyone's doing.

I've got family in Nassau Bay and Kemah, and they refused to evacuate. They said it's all over now and the waiting begins. They're completely trapped since flood waters are huge. They're safe though, and that's the important thing.

I cant believe we didnt get hit by that one. For the past month the news has been all "ITS COMMIN RIGHT FER US!" The only reasons Hurricanes suck is because they usualy knock out the power. And no power means no A/C. No A/c mean alot of HOT, HUMID, SWEATY, INTERNET and TVless people sitting outside.

I'm out in Katy right now. My entire neighborhood lost power, but luckily that's really the only major damage (a little water leaked into my house because of a poorly installed patio by the previous owner). I'm here in Katy because my friend out here did NOT lose power. So, I'm bumming off him for the night. I hope everybody in Kotakuland is a-ok.

Here's the thing - it's seldom the two hour or so hurricane that's the problem. It's the two weeks without power or fresh water that follows.

Ok. I survived. My girlfriends house did not, unfortunately. So now I have a refugee. We will be playing DS by candlelight soon.
Most of the city is without power. We are on a city wide curfew 9pm to 6am for the rest of the week. I am fortunate enough to have the internet for a couple hours, and charged my phone. Luckily most people in the main part of the city have water.
It's pitch black in my neighborhood, so the curfew makes sense. Today we cut up a bunch of trees and tomorrow, more of the same. A cool front swept through, so it's not nearly as humid as yesterday. If it weren't for warm beers and my DS, I would not have slept at all.
This experience has been a huge eye-opener. I feel very fortunate to have what I have.
