New Fable II Screens Bring The Spooky
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on September 16, 2008
Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention, but when I think of Fable II, I think of bright lit hills, cobblestone paths and cheery townsfolk of hobbit proportions. I don't think of glowing-eyed, pig-tailed specter girls and creepy goblins at twilight. Thanks, new screens from the Xbox 360 exclusive. You've forced me to take another look at Fable II.

I just read today that this game will take 12-15 hours to compete. Looks like it is gonna suffer the same fate as the original Fable. The first one was fun, but the fact that is was so short killed it for me. RPGs are meant to be decently long games, at least try and go for over 20 hours. Hopefully there is plenty more stuff to do that is engaging and doesn't equal lame boring mini-games like the first had. Also it was EXTREMELY easy. This one needs a difficulty slider, because it helps with playtime.

Every time I see pictures of this, it makes me want to buy another 360 just so I can play this before it dies on me again. If Fable II plays half as good as it looks, I'd maybe just consider that $300+ "extended rental".

This game looks EXACTLY like Fable 1. Here's to Molyneux blowing smoke up everyone's asses for the umpteenth time in a row.
Just make a sequel to Magic Carpet already.

Local co-op on this sold me already. Looking forward to it. Hopefully Molyneux took all that negativity about the original on the chin and decided to learn from it.

@nitromic:
the story is 12-15 hours, not the entire game. 12-15 hours is longer than oblvion's story and im not sure of anyone complaining of its length. And judging from the 1up.com preview that just came out for Fable 2, the game is living up to every expectation Molyneux set for it. GOTY material for sure.

@Kaizuden: But Peter said he was simplifying the combat from the first game. Which means...mashing less than one button constantly, I guess? And the first Fable was horribly short on content, so alot of people are understandably worried about this one. Frankly, the first Fable was graphics over content and gameplay.

Screens are looking nice, and for those who do look closely, it -does- look like Fable I, but then again, maybe the first game really did look that good? Anyways I'll take gameplay and content over graphics any day.

I can't wait for Fable 2. Loved the first one a lot but then again, i never had high exceptions from the so called "hype" (mostly because i never visited game sites back then). So i enjoyed the game for what it was, not what it was suppose to be.
The graphics look absolutely gorgeous for Fable 2. My only hope is the game plays smooth without any frame drops (because that really ruins games).

@Moar_pr0nz: LOL... silly <3 Oblivions main quest is about 50 hours long... my lonely addicted ass spent over 300 hours on the game (which in retrospect I'm not proud of but would gladly do again).

@dowingba: Well timed button combos aren't anything new to me which might be interesting, and yeah the first game was all about the visuals with little left going for it. However I'm still holding out on having a true open world environment rather then a small map to small map via the previous game. However... I'm not going to hold out much.

@Moar_pr0nz: I know, but the question is does it have as much side material as oblivion. I never even touched the main story in Oblivion and had a fairly good time. The original Fable didn't have much to do besides the story, so I am worrying about story length on this one.

Oblivion's main quest surely is longer than 15 hr if you play it like a normal person. I have a serious love-hate relationship with that game. It's a ton of fun to run around and do stuff and build up a character, but eventually it's just the same thing over and over again and gets too boring to go on with. I've played for I don't know how many hours with different characters playing all kinds of different side quests and faction quests and then I get to that stupid Allies for Bruma quest and a third of the way through decide this game was fun for a while but it lost me. Again.
If Fable 2 can give me 20 or 30 or 50 or whatever fun hours of story and side quests and allows me to finish the freakin' game I'll be more than happy.
I'm still waiting for another Planescape: Torment--maybe this will be it.

@kidko: That's funny, because I'm also a massive fan of RPGs, and this is shaping up to be my favourite game of all time. I love sand box games like the Elder Scrolls series, because you can take everything in your own time, you're not forced to do anything. I could easily spend hours just roaming the stunning, beautiful landscape with my pet dog, enjoying the view and getting a bit of gold along the way, whereas other people would be rushing through the story and completing it within a week.

I have to see it . For the time that Fable I came out , it was possibly the most horrible looking Xbox game at the time. Also the fact that you could beat it with relative ease and quickness was also super bad.
Fable II has alot of hype to live up to. Too bad the hype for it will cover up any and all problems associated with the game when it's all said and done.

@Utoom: Agreed! (to the second part of your comment that is). The world needs another Magic Carpet, definitely one of my favourite games in the last decade. I used to watch my father play it for hours on end, I think that is the last game he really got into.
*wikipedia* Holy crap, magic carpet is 14 years ago already! I feel old now :(. In my defense, I was living in Africa, so I only got the game in 1998 or so. Heard about it on Cybernet (anyone remember that?), and then got it as a b-day present from my parents.
Anyways, back on topic, I have always liked Molyneux's work, despite its flaws. I'm sure Fable 2 will be enjoyable, and that's enough for me..
Or it would be, except that I'm mainly a pc gamer and dont have the money for an xbox 360 atm :( Hopefully there will be a pc port somewhere in the future. Have there been any rumours about this?

@Sweetsauce:
The graphics were good, no doubt. It was the art design (what with my freakishly manly looking younger self with the giant hands, and then the blank look in the later years) that was a little problematic.
However, I'm pretty shocked with the art design of Fable II. Shocked in the very very very VERY GOOD SENSE!
Makes me wish it didn't have to be labelled with the Fable franchise =/
