Saints Row 2 Has Hidden Zombie Mini-Game
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 5:20 AM on September 16, 2008
Zombies. Can't live with 'em.. and they just can't live. You also can't avoid 'em at the moment. They are the fixed-gear bikes of horror.
Not content with infesting hundreds of video games of their own, the Zombie horde has slowly shuffled onto the back lot of the Gang-related sequel Saints Row 2 for a fully-3D mini game.
Pop into one of the game's many arcades and you should find a Zombie coin-op that uses the main game's 3D engine to pit you (actually, your avatar's avatar, I suppose) against an army of undead brain-chompers, like a Left 4 Dead-lite.
What could be better than this? Two things - first, if Rockstar take up the challenge and implement GTA IV in an in-game console in GTA V. Second, two words — Zombie Busey.

@thespyderboy: Hehe, just like the fact that you put down "drugs" as an essential. :)
@Mommar: That could work, but it would be a little harder to pull off. Most players would probably run for the mountains right off the bat 'cause there would be less zombies in the area. I could see the balance being restored by having less necessary resources like food, water,...ah, what the hell and drugs being in those areas.

The more I hear about SR2, the more I yearn for it. It just keeps getting better and better with each info bite released.
I've been awaiting the game since I first heard it was being developed (I was a huge fan of the first one).
Stop teasing me and release the damn game already! >:O

@deadjesterx: That would be another excellent transition - what starts as missions for essentials like money and drugs, turns into missions for actual essentials, like shelter, health, and ammo (which there should be plenty of). And you can even add some nice character twists by pairing up former enemies.
@Mommar: A range of environments would be great, but going from something like a major city to a small town or wilderness would probably be tricky for a sandbox. However, you could probably change the environments by having parks, suburbs, wealthy areas, ghettos and the like. Abandoned refinery, too.

A GTA-like zombie game would be pretty awesome. Actually, a San Andreas type setting with multiple cities, smaller shanty towns and some wilderness in between would be even more cool.

It does sound good...and honestly, I think Left 4 Dead looks a little over-hyped.
The graphics just aren't that great, and I like the classic Romero, slow-moving zombies better.

@thespyderboy: You just described the basics of my dream game. :)
You could also have mission-esque type of scenarios, like your classic "Hold the barricades from the approaching Hoard" or simply trying to find basic supplies like water and food.

You know, if this just sparked the idea for what could be an awesome game:
-Take something like GTA IV or SR2's big sandbox environment and start it off as normal
-Weird things are happening in the background and some people take notice
-People start turning into zombies
-Have fun
Basically, what starts out as a normal sandbox game turns into a zombie game over time. Sure, there may not be as much replay-ability, but watching that slow and gradual change (whether its in the background or not, be it on TVs or other rooms, etc.) would be marvelous in a game. I'd buy it. Even if it's just a 10-15 hour (ideally 15-20, or 20-25) game.

Man, offering me something about zombies is like offering a junkie crack. It's very hard to say no.
I'd be all over that if Left 4 Dead wasn't coming out this year.
Sounds cool and I'd love to see a sandbox game where the main focus is the zombie apocalypse. But to be honest, it looks like Valve already has these guys beat.
Still...one can't have too many zombies...I'll wait and see what the final word on the feature is when the game comes out.

I really like how they're carving out a niche for themselves. Saint's Row as the "silly crazy variety" sandbox game, versus the new GTA as "mostly serious" sandbox game.

You're actually seriously misrepresenting this.
It's not just a "Zombie mini-game", it's the entire city of Stilwater but instead of pedestrians and gang members it's just zombies as far as the eye can see.
The entire city.
If you've played Total Overdose there's those mini-games where you have to fight off the living dead for a brief period of time, this is similar but totally free-form and not time-limited.

*sigh* this reminds me of the old GTA, the one that you had to break into area 51 to steal a jetpack GTA... I mean, Saints Row could be the next GTA, but their story telling sucks. "yo, dood, i'm like totally hip, lets shootup dem ganstas yo!" everyone knows GTAs stories rock because of the organized crime aspect.

Fixed it for ya.
Just to explain how awesome this 'mini-game' is.
Hell, I could actually see myself dicking around for once in a sandbox game (Im terrible for sticking to the story missions now, I used to be such a loafer in GTA when I was younger) now. This would mean I might actually put it back in the system from time to time after finishing it.

@Burguois, Teabagger of Olde: Are these the slow shuffling zombies from Night of the Living Dead or the really nasty ones that can run at you like in 28 Days Later? If the latter and it's freeform and the arcade owner will NOT kick you out, because time doesn't pass in the game playing the arcade, that sounds pretty fun just to see how long you can survive almost like a cross between I Am Legend and Dawn of the Living Dead.

@thespyderboy: I've been wishing for something like that for a long, long time. Possibly in GTA4's engine, with the euphoria physics animation. And combine it with multiplayer like how the Naughty Dog founder talked about in that one issue of game informer, and it would be the best game ever. God I hope a developer is reading this thread and uses these ideas.
If this mini-game is close to what I think it is, then holy crap, whoa. I will buy this game when I get a PS3.

@deadjesterx: I agree completely. Basically a sandbox 3D version of Urban Dead would be Teh win!
Rummaging abandonded buildings for supplies, teaming up with other people to survive, turning into a zombie if you die, different skills to unlock, time advancing even if you're not playing, so you need to rely on barricades and other players to keep you safe.
OMG, I would buy 10 copies of that game, just to have some spares for when I wear them out. Also, this game would be the ultimate game for DLC. Think new weapons, buildings, skills, zombie-skills, clothes, etc.
