Star Trek Online Revealed! Um, In New Game Informer
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on September 16, 2008
Not here, sadly. We don't have magazine covers to bargain with, you know. But Game Informer, the print kings of the exclusive do, and they have a 10-page blow-out on Cryptic's Star Trek Online. With no Star Trek TV show to rally behind and a feature film that feels light years away, the possibility of commanding our own starship — or perhaps making Sumarian Sunsets in the ship's mess hall — is appealing even to me. And I loathe MMOs.
The October ish of Game Informer should be deployed by shuttle to newsstands any minute now, if you're interested in boldly going wherever $14.99 a month will take you. Perhaps more interesting is the "What If? starring Assassins' Creed's Patrice Desilets" feature, because we assume it highlights alternate facial hair choices for the Ubisoft developer.
October Issue Revealed [GI - thanks, Ian!]

@aeonite:
lol I used to use a comment in the Trek Community regarding games when people talked about having a Trek game with a very detailed RTS flavor.
"I don't want to be able to control the sonic showers."
Although, for the couple hundred people that would like to get involved in games that control all those aspects that might be fun.In general,it's not going to be very fun.

Seriously? You want to pay $60 plus another $15 a month to be a lackey who plays mini games? I think you are in the minority. I'm all for something different, but there's something to be said for fun over realism, and your scenario - while realistic - doesn't really sound like it'd be fun to do in a game where you'll probably spend 10 to 20 hours a week doing it.

As a hardcore Trek fan, I DO NOT like what they are doing to the lore of the massive Star Trek universe. They are making up their own shit which breaks the lore of the universe.
For example, the ships on the cover are total, total conjecture and have NO BASIS OR FACT in the lore.
Yes yes, they can say it's so and so many years after Nemesis so they can do what they want, but the real truth is they don't have the talent to use ONLY CANON and make a good MMO, let alone a game. ( We don't consider MMO's games, they are treadmills with a fancy coat of paint. )
What I want is to be a low grade Engineer on a Klingon Vor'Cha class Battlecruiser during the Dominion War. I want to work as a team on this ship with each member of the team being played by a human. If I fail to regulate the power flow correctly during battle I will not only risk damaging my honor, but the ship might be destroyed.
Assuming I can control the power flow and we win a small battle, during the honor meal I want to have mini games in where we kill targs, drink blood wine, eat Gagh, and then hit each other until we get our new orders from the captain.
Can you imagine what kind of friendships and loyalty could emerge if everyone on a ship was a real person, not just you as the captain with 20 or 200 AI 'crewmates' who repeat the same words and quests.
I want to get orders from the high command via our subspace radio officer, who then has to relay the orders to the captain, who then has to command his crew to prepare the ship for the mission at hand, execute orders, punish mistakes.
The science officer at the second he/she gets the order must learn as much as possible about where we are going, be it in space or on a planet. If this officer gets it wrong and gets a scan of say, the conditions on a planet the captain could beam down a war party equipped with the wrong tools for the job.
Over time teamwork will build and then when a problem pops up such as a bird of prey (cloaked) detects a Dominion patrol while half of it's crew is on a planet - how well the team works together, the skill of each and every person on the team, and the captains 'sense' will determine their fate.
This game should offer a hardcore mode, meaning if you and your crew fuck up and get blown up ( some might escape in pods if say federation to play on ) you have to start over.
Fuck levels, if you have the vision to design a game even 10% of what I described it will be a fans dream.
Don't make Wow with phasers and ships.
Don't design the game exactly like other MMO's.
Limit as much as possible AI crew. Involve human control as much as you can. Watch the show, they always get out of shit due to teamwork.
Don't make it so you can be an android and beam over to a borg cube and all by your self take the cube out because you are wearing 'phAt leWt'.
So in conclusion I do not expect this MMO to be even 1% of what a Star Trek MMO could be. Not even close.
Surprise me, Cryptic. Take risks. Show guts.

@aeonite: Think of the style of EVE Online. Everyone says it's different, and many people probably like you hate it and it's pace.
If you are going to make a Star Trek MMO you have to make it for the fans BECAUSE gamers and mainstreamers WILL NOT support it no matter how dumbed down you make it.

@NintendoFanBoy64: In theory, the idea of everyone playing a 'lackey' or whatever on a ship and micromanaging SOUNDS great, but this is an MMO, guys -- 10 minutes out from port your entire weapons crew would have quit for dinner. Your navigator would lag out and you'd warp into a sun or something. The guys who were supposed to maintaining your shields would be AFK. Then when your ship blows up, half your crew rage quits.
It would suck.

@NintendoFanBoy64:
When I first heard about a Trek MMO, this was my hope as well - the "massive multiplayer" would involve the entire crew of a ship, from redshirt to Captain, working together as a collective. Sadly, this was not to be.
I'm imagining this game will turn out like Pirates, but in space. Hhm..Space Pirates...

@aeonite: I meant the aspect of Eve in where the fans are close and that you have to do so called menial things. Some people like to fully immerse themselves in a universe and not always be a hero - or never a hero.
Star Trek is perfect for this style!

@NintendoFanBoy64: While you idea has merit and I would probably like to play that way for a while it would get old fast. I know I'm not the only person like this but I have MMO ADD, if I don't keep doing new thing or going to new areas I get bored fast. So while being part of a crew and doing "your part" in it sound nice only a few could really keep that up.
The other problem I can see with that Idea is having to be with the same people constantly, while I know guilds and the like work out not every one can get on when ever they want to be a part of the same crew so that team work you want may not work out as well as you'd hope.

@NintendoFanBoy64: It's a good set of ideas. Very close to my fantasy Star Trek MMO, too.
But in practice, it's just not fun. I remember being so excited to learn that in Ultima Online, you could become a baker in a small village and just bake bread for people all day.
Turns out it's pretty fricking boring...

What everyone seems to fail to understand is how freaking ADVANCED and COMPLEX even one 'simple' station is on a Star Trek ship. I can imagine dozens of mini games for each station masked as 'manning your post'.

I like the idea of having - if you'll forgive the pun - The Best Of Both Worlds. Being able to run a ship totally solo with only AI crewmates (perhaps for a very long trip to somewhere that only I'm interested in) but also allow my friends to come aboard and man the various main stations, and gain the advantage of having skilled gamers aiming my phasers instead of "adequate but not great" AI's.
Does anyone remember an ancient game called Psi 5? You were the Captain, and you're only involvement with, say, weapons was to tell the weapons officer what to start shooting, and to prioritise targets. It actually worked really well. I'd like to see a similar setup in this, so that your shooting accuracy is going to be dependent on the skills of either the AI or real-life human friend that you've got on the tactical station.

Posted 8:59 PM 16/9/08
@BritBloke916: Yep, that's what I'd like to see too. Of course, what would really make this Star Trek would be a speech recognition engine, so you could issue vocal commands to your AI crew. Bridge Commander tried this years ago, but the technology wasn't really there. Things have advanced since - it'd be nice to see someone else take a crack at it.
'cause when it comes down to it, being a Star Trek captain is all about being able to yell "Red alert!" and "Full power to the engines!" :D
