Wii Music Lets You Play 'The Cheerleader'
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on September 16, 2008
You know, I actually used to be a pretty good cheerleader player back in high school. Thought about forming my own band, dropping out, taking it "on the road," but couldn't hit those high "Pretty!" notes consistently. Eventually I just lost interest in cheerleader playing, because all the chicks go for the tuba player in the end, and because every composition sounded like the soundtrack of insanity. Thank God for Wii Music, which captures that dissonance perfectly. I really can't wait to play the Super Mario Bros. theme in the key of "shrill pep."

You wont believe this, but my 4 year old got bored with her wii, and started playing those online coloring book games on my wifes laptop, well my wife didn't like her on her school lappy, so I got a great idea, I went into the basement and dug out my SNES and Mario Paint, mouse and all, and she LOVES it! Plays it all the time! I'm so glad I spent $250 on a console that can't hold my daughters attention for more than a week, when a 15 year old console keeps her busy and happy! Also she seems to have a disturbing penchant for zombies, now that I showed her zombies ate my neighbors.....

Whatever happened to the good old Woof, Oink and Meow from Mario Paint. Are they in this one? If they're not, then I don't care about this game. Come to think of it I don't care much to begin with. Hopefully Nintendo does the smart thing and bundles this game with a nunchuck or something.

Now that I think about it. Well...here.
Everyone here seems to like Mario Paint. This is partly due to nostalgia. Now imagine you are the age you are now during the SNES era and (for convenience sake) the interest existed back then as it does now. Wouldn't people complain about how silly Mario Paint looks after looking at ad after ad like this? I think that would be the case! And the case is similar here because at Mario Paint's release a great Zelda and Mario were already released, with Metroid 2 entire years away and the next console Zelda 6 years away. I know it is not exactly the same, but it is uncannily similar. There is no reason to complain. How many truly great games were there on SNES? N64? Did people complain about the low amount of good games compared to the high amount of bad ones? Not that I can remember. It has ALWAYS been like this. So cheer up, people!

I am a Nintendo fan, but fandom has it's LIMITS.
I am so ashamed to be a Nintendo fan when I see these vids.
Who the fuck is Nintendo trying to target, fetuses?( I mean, they can kick their mom in the womb, thus triggering the music!!!)
Nintendo. Please. Stop.
Reform Deer and make a HARDCORE 2D Metroid.
Call it 'Super Metroid 2: Bloodlust'
You have no idea how many loads of um 'excited fan sweat' would be blown 5 seconds after you announce it. ( 5 seconds? nerds we are I guess)
Read my text.
Full 2D ( No background 3D shit )
Name it Super Metroid 2 at the least. Why? Hardcore cred. You are badly lacking it. Really.
The way you can announce the game is when you get to whatever number you are going to for Wii shi.. I mean music you can slowly pan out the screen until we see blackness around the monitor, then slowly tease us with select sound effects as you keep pulling the view back IN 3D until you reveal a a 2D Samus in a 2D world who was using her '3D side vision' or something to view the monitor. Have Samus then turn and face the screen to pull her helmet off.
The wind catches her long blonde hair, as the 2D screen itself pans out to reveal a destroyed landscape that looks somewhat familiar... we will understand it's Earth - but in time we will find out Samus has no clue it's Earth, or what an 'Earth' even is.. ( For the panning imagine the Fallout 3 trailer where it does this )
See Nintendo? I just gave you the core of a game that would excite the fanboys like myself to a point where each time they talk Wii they are rabid about it, not holding their head down to mainstreamers blaming them for you 'going soft'.
What does this all mean?
SALES. Even more SALES!

@Dr. Nooooooooo: Sorry for the double post, but I have to disagree with your statement. It seems to me that many people would think Wii Music is a step backward from Mario paint, and when you are making a game 3 generations in the future that is less fun, less creative, and had less effort put into it than a SNES game that to some might seem little more than a gimmick, you deserve all the criticism people will give you for it.

Alright, Nintendo.
I've always been a gamer. I wouldn't necessarily call my self "hardcore," but I've played video games almost all my life.
I've tried to belief in you. I was excstatic about my first SNES, my first Gameboy Pocket, my first N64. I loved them. I loved the games. The Gamecube..eh. I was hopeful about the next system.
When motion controls were announced, I was extremely hopeful. I pictured some great shooters and an amazing Star Wars game.
I liked Wii Sports. Nothing crazy, but it was enjoyable for short periods of time. Some of the driving games were "ok." I even bought Wii Fit.
And now, we get this.
At least earlier in the Wii's lifetime you were pushing Mario Kart and Metroid Prime.
Off the top of my head, I can't name a single Wii game that I'm excited about.
On the other hand, I can name at least five 360 games that I'm extremely excited about.
So, cheers, Nintendo. I'm moving on.
P.S.: I'm probably going to come crawling back once Wii Motion Plus comes out ;)

Now guys, hey. Did you ever hear of a bandwagon?. This is nothing more than a bunch of kids bought up in the arcade generation. The only reason those games were "hardcore" was so that they would get your quarters. A million allowances worth of quarters.
Now that games are becoming innovative, and are able to function outside of the actual gaming word, doesn't give you the right to slam them and deter people who may enjoy an actual Wii experience.
Now every comment I've seen here has been negative, and that is ridiculous for a game you haven't even played. Now what does that say about you. To make my point clear, I will go second by second if I have to to show how much quality exists in this brainchild of top Nintendo execs.
Nice and calm in the beginning, with some subtle music to show you the family atmosphere this game belongs in. Okay, so you can say "go!", "cool!", and "yeah!", probably towards some sort of recognizable beat. Hm. No, not quite. Um. Uh.
Wow.

@TheTheTheTheWhat: And what wii-nerds never seem to get is most of us don't mind "casual games", what we mind is being shoved off to the side... Simply because the big N makes more money with crap like this than with real games, and the media falls in line. The real media, I mean, not the games media... The real media is happy that that nerdy gaming thing is a thing of the past and "true innovators" like nintendo are making cheap bar games for home use and they make more money than games that are made for people who actually care about the medium.

@Dr. Nooooooooo: Nah, because you see- in Mario Paint, it was actually fun to be creative. You could make witty songs, do silly things. Granted it wasn't much of a game, but it was amazing what people could do with it.
But this? This is ridiculous. Shaking a controller and hearing a cheerleader scream "fuck yeah" every time you waggle isn't going to do much of anything. I mean seriously. I can only imagine this must somehow appeal to the japanese audience, in terms of what the cheerleader is saying, because this is getting ridiculous. I thought it was bad enough at the dog...

@giroml:
You're an idiot.
Because you've overlooked the possibility of a household having both a 360 and a Wii.
Even then, I'd be fine with just the Wii. Cause the only things my brothers and I end up playing on the 360 together are (1) Halo, (2) CoD4, (3) Rock Band, and (4) Guitar Hero. Two of those are available for Wii. Of the four, their are two pairs of genre duplicates. If you haven't figure it out yet, I could do without.
As for the PS3, I'd like one if I could purchase a $50 version that could only play LittleBigPlanet. Well, maybe try out MGS4, but I suck at that series, so meh.

@ChiChi_BBQ:
Except I would think this would annoy even that audience. Assuming they're human.
Then again, I get the feelings that these Wii Music commercials are in sequence for a reason. They're testing to see how much they can annoy the general populous, fully aware that their consumers will buy this anyway.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: 'RIP Wii Music 2008-2008'
Let's wait until we see the sales charts, shall we? When does it come out in Japan, pretty soon right?
I thought this ad was hilariously annoying. Do you have a little kid daughter/sister? Because this is what she's going to play. ALL THE TIME. Awesome.
Still kind of tempted to get the game despite its (probable) utter pointlessness in single-player mode, but will still probably manage to resist...

I'm glad a new Wario platformer is on the horizon, otherwise I would have forced myself to commit seppuku.

Yes, what really upsets me is this will outsell Fallout 3.

Oh god, you thought you got annoyed at Navi while playing Ocarina of Time...
Turn up the sound on the TV when you're playing this, and you've got the best way EVER to annoy everybody in your house simultaneously.
One thing you have to give the Japanese, they keep coming up with ways to make things more efficient.

Oh God.
First a dog, so the cowbell and now this?
I think Nintendo's been nibbling on Mario's magic mushrooms.
