Yes, Infinity Ward Are Doing The Next Call Of Duty
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on September 16, 2008
Activision Blizzard had an "analysts day" conference call today. Plenty of stuff to get through from it, but first things first: confirming earlier "leapfrog" assumptions, it's been announced that the next Call of Duty game will be brought to us by Infinity Ward. Good news for those who still, for some reason, think it's funny to hate on Treyarch, but for everyone else, it probably only confirms what you probably already assumed. Sadly no mention of any sci-fi take on the series, but there's plenty of time - and trade shows - for that particular mystery to be resolved.

I wouldn't be surprised if Treyarch was already working on Call of Duty 7.. :P

Call of Duty 4 was the first FPS I've ever played, and one of the only. Is Call of Duty 3 really that bad? But, I can say that after the polish of Call of Duty 4 no other shooter I've played really does it for me.

Any of the Infinity Ward guys reading this message board? If so, *please* throw in some UFOs, aliens, and giant godzilla-like monsters to change up the franchise a little bit, and do keep it in 60 frames per second. Yes, I am asking you to do a take on Resistance, but in a way that's done right!

My guess is that it's gonna go into the near-future. not far enough for aliens or laser guns, probably just "future" weapons like the Kris Super V SMG or the F2000 rifle. IW does gritty human conflict very well, and I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out a little like Battlefield 2142 (minus walking tanks, I suppose).

I could see them going not sci-fi, but the not too distant future. Because the CoD4 was pretty high tech, not future tech, but about as high tech as I could imagine a soldier getting. CoD6 I'd like to see them fully implement technologies that we're working on, have ideas about, and aren't in circulation yet. Something like the secret weapons over Normandy, where they put in weapons the Nazi's were working on at the end of the war.

I wouldn't be too crazy about a Vietnam version of CoD. For some reason jungle environments get really boring after a short time.
Personally, I'd like to see them do a persistant world shooter (modern day or near future)in the vein of Planetside except with slightly less emphasis on the vehicles (Novalogics "Joint Ops" did a good job of making vehicles utilitarian without making them central).

I would love for COD6 to get into near-future scenarios.. I'm thinking Act of War, but an FPS. That said, I've never actually PLAYED AOW, but I read the books on a few long flights. Cybernetic soldier-suit? Portable TOW launchers? EMPs? Lasers? There could be some good stuff there.
But honestly, I'm still waiting for a new Timesplitters. All this talk of cybernetics makes me want a cyber monkey. Hehe. Cybermonkey.

Treyarch isn't a bad developer, parse, but when they have to carry the flag of Infinity Ward they look very meager in comparison. There's nary a studio out there with such a great record, even if it's a short rap sheet.
And here's to hoping they take CoD5 into the future! That would be too awesome. Hopefully with the resounding success of CoD4 Actiblizz lets them do whatever the hell they want.

I heard their plans are to get to Call of Duty 41 - 45 so they can release special Call of Duty 'Real Ashes' editions that cost $500.
But for that price you get 1 vial of REAL ash from a WW2 vet ( United States and U.K. Only. Sorry, Japanese fans ) who was cremated.
Imagine how looking at the vial of ash of a REAL PERSON who fought in WW2 for the freedom of the world will move you. Imagine how it will take you back to the battles as if you were really there. No mere war show can claim this!
Call of Duty 41: Savage Entry ( With ashes from REAL members of the Navy who died when the japs attacked pearl)
Call of Duty 42: Learning the Ropes ( with ashes and 1 spent shell from a U.K. airman who was shot down during a mission )
Call of Duty 43: God Bless America, fuck the japs ( Includes TWO full ounces of ash from a brave Navy seamen who died during one of the battles in the pacific. )
Call of Duty 44: Damn the Nazis ( Includes 1 vial of ash from a German SS made at a crematory that was ACTUALLY USED to pacify jews!
Imagine the envy of your fellow WW2 artifact collectors as you show them this. Certificate of good old American honestly included! )
Call of Duty 45' : WE WON!
( This my friends is the big one. You have waited for this for years, and we are proud to show you the list of super rare artifacts included with your game.
1: A vial of ash from not just 1, not just 2, but THREE servicemen! ( country(s) of the deceased is random. You might get 3 brits, or 3 americans, or even 3 Canadians. But most will get a mix! )
2: A patch of uniform from one of our boys who died during the invasion of okinawa. There is a 80% chance the patch will have actual dried blood on it! Run a DNA test and have fun tracking down his family!
3: And now my friends, the ultimate chance for WW2 collector godhood. 1 in 500 games will have a secret code and phone number to call in and have shipped to you a ACTUAL piece of DRY, CHARRED SKIN from a JAPANESE CITIZEN who died during one of the atomic bomb drops! It could be from Hiroshima, or perhaps Nagasaki! It's too bad they gave up the fight right boys? We could have offered up some skin from a Tokyo citizen!
So there we have it. I found these plans from the future. I used my hollow banana time machine.

We'll stop hating on Treyarch, when they stop making shitty Call of Duty games. For the love god, just let us use 'A' to climb up/over/out of obstacles like in every other Infinity Ward version.
And why in the hell would their be a sci-fi take on the series? The industry doesn't need another Sci-Fi FPS Space Marine vs. Aliens/non-human game, its not like there's a shortage of them to play.

Do you think maybe they have a development schedule like this...?
Year 1: Treyarch begins making Call of Duty A
Year 1: Infinity Ward begins making Call of Duty B
Year 2: Call of Duty A (TA) released
Year 3: Call of Duty B (IW) released
Year 3: Treyarch begins Call of Duty C
Year 3: Infinity Ward begins Call of Duty D
Year 4: Call of Duty C is released
Year 5: Call of Duty D is released
If you didn't understand the above, what I'm assuming is that they both begin development on two different Call of Duty's games in the same year, then Treyarch releases first and Infinity Ward releases second. It'd explain why Treyarch games tend to be of somewhat less quality, and how they're able to churn out Call of Duty's almost kinda as fast as Maddens.

@Nexus6 : "How about a realistic sci-fi approach on what warfare would look like in 2050? Like Jules Verne but with shit exploding."
I don't see it happening....ever. Unfortunately we have nothing to base what we think warfare will be like in 42 years. Which is why there's ton of the same space marine, with his semi-unstoppable space suit and laser weapons, games out there. Fifty years ago people assumed that by now, we'd all have flying cars and be living on the moon. (maybe not to that extent but you get my point). We assume rediculous things when talking about 40, 50, 60, etc. etc, years into the future. And every "realistic" approach to futuristic warfare winds up being the same re-hashed sci-fi nerds wet dream. Call of Duty as a a series is a war game, based around very factual and actual information. Prior to 4, it was known as a WWII era genre, and with the release of 4, we now see that the series can be successful in any era, so long as the game is done we'll. Infinity Ward staffs a single person/team as their "Military Advisor", to make sure what you see in the game is real, accurate, and to the most point not a steaming pile of bull shit. As far as I know there's no sci-fi warfare advisors that exists. So anything you put in a game, even if its a realistic approach is going to be your own interpretation of what YOU, or a select body of people "think" could be futuristic warfare. And in the end what you wind up with is the same Halo, Doom, Haze, Crysis, Quake, Gears, etc. etc. themed games. And while in their own rights these games maybe we'll structured games, the simple fact is there's a getting to be too damn many of them. And the last thing the Call of Duty franchise needs to do is add to the pile of sci-fi war games.

Treyarch Faction:"These guys are good but were better. We spent a lot of time training for this. Quick hide behind that wall then attack!"
Infinity Ward: "what wall? all i see is a target. Send in an air strike!"
hahahaha Thats why i bought cod 4, its modern combat. You can polish crap all you want. Take as much time as you want. In the end, its still crap.
