Get Inside The Political Machine - For Free
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 6:20 AM on September 18, 2008
With less than two months to polling day the time is ripe for Stardock to try and push copies of their Presidential Election sim The Political Machine 2008 - i.e. before the entire nation becomes so heartily sick of the election process that it would sooner set fire to its collective genitals than pay cash money for anything to do with politics.
Any armchair Karl Rove's might be tempted by a freebie version of the game, The Political Machine Express'08, which offers all the thrills and spills of the full game's 21-week election campaign, less a couple of extra features (such as running historical campaigns or trying to become president of an alien world)
We thought the 2004 edition relied a little too much on issues and rational thought - cynics and realists will be pleased to learn that the '08 version incorporates spin doctors, smear merchants and political intimidation.

Yeah, cause I wasn't already there, like, three months ago... got a lighter?

Stuart Houghton, I will never be able to read anything you post if you keep making the "it's / its" error in -successive- posts. Please. For the love of mercy, you only use apostrophes in contractions. Possessive, like "its collective genitals" is without. Please. This is not a personal attack, it is a -plea-.

@teh_joe: I believe he's just on the "Politicians People Like" side.
Also, good look, Stardock. I might buy your real thing now.

Hm. Might be worth trying.
It's free, so, why not?

Reviews of this game all seem very positive, and yet the numbers are low. I'm on the fence about picking this up... Is it completely DRM-free on Stardock? That would probably tip me in their favor.

Do I lose points in the poll if I have my candidate equip the black suit/red tie combo but no flag pin?

@teh_joe: I can come up with two reasons for that pretty easily.
1. The candidates are just names and aren't neccessarily connected to their real-life characters.
2. The Democratic and Republican parties(well, "family of parties.") have experienced significant changes over the years, and it's not very hard to make an argument that some old republicans would today be democrats and some old democrats would today be... well, neo-cons.

Seems fitting. Obama's represented by a bobblehead, McCain by a stone tablet hieroglyphic.

Forget the lack of DRM, installing Stardock just for this is annoying. Making you put some bloatware for basically a trial version is stupid. No thanks.

It puts the lotion on its skin, or it's going to get the hose.

@teh_joe: Yeah, I was wondering why Lincoln was on the democrat side too. kind of stuck out like a sore thumb there.

@mwoody: Stardock stuff= DRM check only on updates, and never interferes with your actual playing of the game. So yeah, DRM isn't an issue with them.
BTW on Impulse (which is probably the reason they're doing this) you can delete Impulse as soon as you finished downloading, and it won't affect your game.

Woot. More free stuff!
Kotaku.com, my new favorite place for links to free awesome game stuff. Actually, I didn't have a favorite place to get free stuff originally, but hey, I'm enjoying the Castle Crasher soundtrack, so I'm all for more free stuff.

Full game is great if you're a political junkie. Worth playing through once or twice if you don't care, but anyone that likes this stuff should enjoy it.
Full version is totally worth the $20 bucks. Like other Stardock games (Gal Civ), the devs keep updating the title and keep tabs on what players think.
