Oh Yes, Ubisoft Knew About Wii Motion Plus
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 6:00 PM on September 18, 2008
Back when Wii Motion Plus was announced at E3, many developers seemed surprised. Nintendo likes to keep things close to its chest, and developers like Lucasarts were apparently kept in the dark. Not happy campers! Leave it to Ubisoft honcho Yves Guillemot to stride in and utter "We knew that". According to Guillemot:
Nintendo has been working on that for a long time, trying to see how they could improve the precision. We knew for a long time they were working on that, so it's not a big surprise for us. We'll start seeing something in September/October. We already have games that can take advantage of it.
Got any questions about what Nintendo is up to, who's going to win the World Series or where babies come from? Ask Yves. Dude's a Gallic soothsayer.

Crap, now the Wii is going to get a Splinter Cell game where the waggle will be involved in damn near everything.
Want to pick up documents?? You don't just press A, you move the controller forward to grab the docs THEN press A.
Motion+ = EXTREME MOVEMENT OMG
/... are you kidding me, ubisoft? ...REALLY?

@bobtheduck: From the way it looks, it plugs into the bottom of the Wiimote and gives it another port for the Nunchuk/Classic Controller.

@bobtheduck: It can be used at the same time as the Nunchuk, as far as I know.

Gallic soothsayer? He contains gallium? Or, is he working with Gallium3D?
Also, isn't wii motion plus a replacement for the nunchuck? That'll be like cutting off one hand and giving the other one an extra elbow. I see its uses limited the same way games that ONLY use the wiimote are.
In any case... It's great Ubisoft knows about this device... I guess... Until Capcom came to the rescue (heh), Raving Rabbids was the only thing decent on the system without Mario, Wario, Link, or Samus in it.
Of course, there's also Red Steel and Splinter Cell... 1/3 ain't bad, right?

That's not quite the same as Nintendo telling them what they're upto.
I can do this too,ok here goes. Nintendo will sell another bazillion Wii irrespective of good gaming content or motion plus

He probably did know, and it was through Red Steel that it was proved to Nintendo that games like that needed it.

hahahah @ Gallic soothsayer.. classic obscure seer choice there, Bash. classic.
I'm happy to know SOMEONE knew.. because I did think that was one of the dumbest moves they could possibly do. Announce something that will make controls 1:1... and give developers 6 months to do anything with it...? Honestly, we probably won't see anything that really takes advantage of Motion+ until a year after it is on the shelves... because that seems to be how it works with any of new tech... for the DS, Wii..
It does seem that Sega might have known since soon after Motion+ was announced they announced Sonic and the Dark Knight where the blue boy has a sword in his hand... the only possible reason being that it'll use the new device.

They have no chance of winning.
"company overview
Hillcrest Laboratories has created the first pointer-based, interactive media system for TV. Hillcrest Labs enables CE and peripheral manufacturers, service providers, and internet content companies to deliver the most visually engaging and intuitive way to access, discover, and interact with digital media throughout the home.
Components of Hillcrest Lab's HōME™ Interactive Media System can be embedded in a wide range of digital entertainment devices including high definition televisions, set-top-boxes and personal computers.
The company won two 2006 International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards, presented by the Consumer Electronics Association and the Loop was named as one of Popular Mechanics magazine's Best of CES 2007. Based in Rockville, Maryland, Hillcrest Labs was founded in 2001 by Dan Simpkins. The company is funded by NEA, Columbia Capital and Grotech Capital."
Nintendo supposedly started designs for the wiimote in 2000.
How can hillcrest labs win this if they werent even a company at the time nintendo was developing the wiimote?

Figuring out is different than then saying.
@Talleh: It's Nintendo, not Sega. There's a difference there. Stupid Nintendo, they're getting too cocky and while Sega went that away for awhile at least they stayed true to their fans, giving good games while Nintendo? My Wii only doesn't collect dust because of third parties. Way to go 180.

Cool, Nintendo lets in a developer that does nothing but make causal games that have little to no need for precision, while they leave all the other developers that could have used it and need precision out of the loop.
This is coming off like the Saturn, at least I think it was, where they said "Surprise! It'll be out this weekend!". I just hope that it won't end up like the 32X, where it's not used by many games, is a useless add on, and fractures the user base. It could get worse if they split it more with an internal storage solution, except games probably wont require it. In fact, I hope that overall, Nintendo doesn't end up like Sega, making major mistakes, over and over till a former giant is out of the console business.

So the fact that Red Steel 2 is being massively delayed has nothing to do with Ubisoft frantically reworking the game to use the Motionplus? Right...
