PS Home Beta Drops Video Sharing
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 8:20 AM on September 18, 2008
Sony have confirmed that the video sharing features have been dropped from the PlayStation Home beta.
In retrospect, the idea of any kind of multimedia sharing from the copyright-wary Sony was always looking a bit wobbly, but it is unclear if the decision was made on technical or IP rights grounds. Home users were meant to be able to invite other gamers to their virtual space and watch videos together - possibly while eating virtual Pringles.
Sony were unable to confirm if the feature is gone for ever, or if it will be returning in the final release.

@DARTH_TIGRIS: Well put this way it's much more reasonable. But it's not always as bad as you seem to think. When put into their own context the PS3 launch and Home launch are pretty different, because of their relative value. Even without all the promised features PS3 is still impressive and what they removed was not proved to affect much more than the price. Home, on the other hand, would have been free no matter what and that specific feature was for many the single greatest reason to look forward to it. I get what you're saying, but if their under-delivery is still better than the competition then what's the point in bashing them for it?

@DARTH_TIGRIS: fair enough, i was just pointing out the drama.
and yeah, i like calling people on shit but only when its something i was concerned about. my only interest in home comes from a) launching games with friends within, b) the side rooms theyve talked about to add to older games (id be upset to see this nixed) and very little of c) a place to show off trophies sounds a bit fun if well done.
the video thing wouldve lasted all of 10 minutes before 4chan and somethingawful went nuts with it. though that woudlnve been hilarious.

@EnigmaNemesis: The pitchfork has to be sharp and ready when the reply drops. The whining is the best thing about the PS crowd this gen. Without it we'd still be in-game XMB-less and $599 (although that's what I paid for mine). Sony tends to slack off when they're not kept in check.

Yikes. I really pissed you guys off. I wasn't even expecting anyone to pay attention to my comment.
For the record, it wasn't intended as a complete Sony bash for everything they do. I was stating that, because of Sony's history of overpromising and underdelivering, they deserve every rock thrown at them FOR THIS. They have not learned from their mistakes in the past. Do not announce a feature in a product or service unless you know you can do it.
So basically I'm not calling for a Sony boycott, saying the PS3 is a bust or blaming Sony for cancer. I'm just saying that its basically not healthy for us as consumers to not call them out for the continuing practice of overpromising (to scoop or belittle their competitors) and underdelivering (preying on brand loyalists).

@crazyscreenwriter: There are other ways of controlling this than removing the feature altogether. Besides, if you're planning a service like this, that problem should be resolved even before the concept goes into development, not (supposedly) a few months before its launch. @EnigmaNemesis: I'd have to say that I agree with Darth_Tigris about over-promising. Whether they kept "a lot of promises" or not, they still have the tendency to not doing what they said they would. If they're not certain that they'll be able to pull something off, maybe they shouldn't bother shooting their mouth off that they'll be doing it. In the past, Sony has been guilty of this for the PS3 as well as the PSP (if I recall correctly.)
Free or not, hearing somebody say that you'll get a, b, and c, then only receiving a and b is still a little bit of a disappointment. If I ever tried to pull something like that with my clients, they'd be fine the first time I pulled that stunt. But a second or third time? They'd move on to someone else.

On the other hand, I can understand the copyright issues kinda snagging things. I hope they work it in, but honestly, I don't care. Maybe when I see the totality of what Home does for me, I'll nitpick on things they should/shouldn't have done. If they can get the base level fucntions out sooner, more power to them.

I used to care about Home...worse, the stripping of features is not limited to video sharing, as it appears that now IMAGES are not allowed. The option to add a picture frame to your personal space is gone, and all indications are it isn't coming back, whether for IP or sensitity/children issues.
So your 'Home' can't even have your own PHOTOS in it, let alone videos.
They'll never admit/do this, but they really need to just drop this Home idea and work on the XMB friend features...this thing is becoming a thin shadow of Second Life...and I'm a Sony fan.

I feel this is just an anomaly hitting against reality like PlayTV's video sharing feature. In these cases (as well as other features not yet realized), it was clear that Sony was entering murky licensing waters. The only people who got their hopes up and believed any of it were people who had no idea just how tight content providers are with their digital assets. Things are just aligning themselves I feel. Sure people will be peeved that Sony couldn't deliver on a promise but no one bats a thousand and we as consumers should really learn to remain cautiously optimistic about things. As far as the things originally promised in HOME, people should be extra-cautious. Either that or be bitter and bitch about it later :|

I mean what with all these games we've been having to install along with any DLC content or games users might have, I wonder if it will be an issue getting everyone to be able to use this and still have space left for music and videos (assuming some people are using most of the PS3's features). And then, I wonder again if it'll come pre-installed on new PS3s.

This is a no-brainer. Seeing as ho you can invite people from *different regions* to your virtual apartment, I can't see as how they ever would have received permission from any content distributors.
The loss of video sharing isn't as much a big deal for me as the (probable) audio sharing loss. I would love to have had music thumping in my home for others. If it doesn't get removed then we might be able to consider this a technical issue.

Sony is caught in a difficult position with Home. On the one hand, the players want customization (picture frames, video sharing). On the other hand they have to contend with not only digital rights, but the inevitable journos who would otherwise log in, fill their apartment with paedophile porn pictures and videos and immediately post pictures as part of a "Oh My God! This Is What Your Child Will Find On PS3 HOME!" article.
For me, the primary purpose of Home will be as a way of easily meeting other PS3 players that I can then add to my Friends list if we get along.

I've been in the beta for a while now and in all honesty, the video sharing was never a big factor for me, and what's more I was always dubious as to how they'd implement it...
The PS3 can play so many video formats that it's essentially begging to be a cinema complex of piracy... what's more, with loads of videos being streamed constantly it would be VERY difficult to monitor all of the information, as such illegal variants of pornography, snuff and other offensive and legally dubious content could be easily shared... it would be a nightmare for them!
for watching movies with friends there's still the cinema/theatre district which can be more closely regulated...
Sony is still on track as far as delivering a relevant service goes...
Home isn't just second life on PS3 and that's fairly obvious to anyone who's used it for more than an hour or so... As a tool for organising your party before proceeding to a game, it's excellent, and I'm looking forward to the open beta just because it'll completely simplify organising games within my community!
