Burnout Bikes Are Go!
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:20 AM on September 19, 2008
The Burnout Bike update is now available as promised for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Burnout Paradise, with Criterion having managed to update both consoles at once this time around without having to delay one or the other. Good job! Along with 2 different motorcycles to choose from, the update also ads 38 new timed race events, dynamic weather, 70 more freeburn challenges, and a 24 hour day / night cycle that affects traffic density and what events are available to play through.
It's like adding a whole new game to an already existing game, for free. Makes you wonder if there'll be another Burnout game this console generation or they're just continue modding this one until the next systems come out. Either way, your bikes are here. Be sure to drive irresponsibly.

@Knoxximus (360/PSN): This is a console game, not a PC game. I guarantee that they've rolled them into one download to avoid confusion. In any case, I put BP into my friend's PC this morning and it downloaded 2 files for the update, although the nature of updating games on PS3 meant I don't know what 2 files they might have been. It was also automatic.

SERIOUS QUESTION:
Is the Cagney update rolled up in this one? I had a chat with an XBL buddy, Maniac Mic (shout out!) last night because the Cagney update was taken down as he was trying to get it last night. We theorized that Criterion would probably roll Cagney up with the bikes and create a 'Universal' update with everything included.
When I downloaded the Bikes this am, that was the only Paradise download available. I figured there would be a 'just bikes' pack and a 'Cagney and bikes' pack for the new adopters.
Anyone have any information on this?

So, I'm guessing there's no word on more achievements? I might have to get the game again just for all the new stuff, but I'd love me some more points to go with that slice of delicious free DLC pie.

The day/night cycle with weather effects is beautiful, I needed it so badly. The city felt old as it was.
The bikes are turning out to be awesome as well

I finally bought this game for the PS3 a few months ago and it amazes me how much content Criterion keeps added to it(for free nonetheless). What amazes me more is that it's published by EA aka the king of squeezing their customers for shit like video walkthroughs and paid for game unlocks. From this point on I'll be buying all Criterion releases day one even if I have no idea what the game is about. This is how you keep a fanbase. <<< yes that's a period.

Should we get some kind of Kotaku 360 Burnout club going on? Have a big group of folks to do monster online games with - especially now that there will be a spike of activity with this new release.

Normally i would say awesome, however after the last update they sent out before this one, it pretty much killed my game, the 360 only recognized the game as a dvd, and said that all of my save data was corrupted...
there won't be any sort of activity in paradise city for me.

I bought BO:P and it was fun, dont get me wrong...but the lack of crash events, and no way to just go to a garage w/o driving half the day, it gets fairly old...
however,
i can't praise these guys enough for contiually trying to update, and freshen burnout paradise. kudos to them.
Also, Armored Core: For Answer...kotaku, you gonna do a review? (Pleaaaase :( )

This is rad. This should be the new DLC archetype. Free, drastic gameplay changes that keeps up coming back for more. Criterion should win an award for this.

@Slippy: Wait until it comes out on PSN. It will have all of the updates up to that point, and it only costs $30!
I like trophies too, but do we really NEED them? The game has a lot of goals already, and I think it's enough. But I want to level up!! We're all becoming trophy-addicts!

@Knoxximus (360/PSN): I was wondering the same thing, I do believe that they combined both updates into 1 final download. My D/L History no longer has the "cagney" or whatever it was, and neither does the marketplace.
I had the 1st update downloaded, but then deleted it because I wasn't playing it. So I can't recall the file sizes, but i'm willing to bet they are combined.
Any website confirmation would be appreciated tho!

This is the first time having a Silver subscription has actually bothered me. I didn't know the waiting period applied to game content as well as demos.
I started a new profile, got the trial Gold membership, and used that to download the bikes update (along with the Mercs 2 and Fracture demos). I know that games downloaded to 1 profile are available to all other users of that system, but does this apply to DLC too?

I installed the update this morning, but upon launching the game, realised that it seems to have killed the DTS audio track that I enjoyed so much pre-update.
Has anyone else noticed this, or heard anything about it?
Dolby Digital is OK, but I like the higher bitrate of the DTS tracks on my PS3 games. :(

@The Replay Booth Disinfectant Intern: Sean Beanland already covered that; you simply restart. Fantastic update! I was thinking of trading this in but this update has re-ignited favour for this game. The night time racing is pretty nice, racing along at night on a bike (loving the dazzling blur from the headlight/s on the signs) to the sound of David Brent's 'Freelove Freeway' is a personal dream (sort of)come true.
Can't wait to see what Criterion do next, cheers guys.

Looks like I'm the only person so far to be unimpressed with the bikes. They handle horribly, there's no boost, hardly any events and you disappear and restart immediately if you crash into a wall. Feels very much like it's tacked on, rather than being properly integrated into the game. Oh well, it's free (although I notice new adverts in game so guessing Criterion does have some financial imperative for the update, other than new game purchases etc.)

I ordered burnout paradise earlier this week in anticipation for this. I hope it arrives today. I'd have previously borrowed my friends copy but he needed it back to play more. This is why Criterion's strategy is awesome. With continued support people want to keep the game and encourage others to buy instead of lending or selling on.

You know what gets me? If you join an online game using bikes, you can't pick a car. I figure the bikes might be a bit unbalanced for racing but then again I'm not certain. I just think its weak that I can't go to the junkyard and pick my big angry turbo boosting windowless rape-van with flames painted on its sides and smash into some punks on motorcycles.
Its not really very fun with the two bikes provided, especially when you can't even boost into a BURNOUT. I played it for about 45 minutes and got sick of it.
Gosh.
