First Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Details
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on September 19, 2008
The new issue of Nintendo Power contains first official details on Rockstar Games' youth corrupting Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, reported to be a cel-shaded, M-rated 3D journey through Liberty City with an isometric view. According to NeoGAF poster botticus, Chinatown Wars looks to adopt GTA IV's use of a cell phone for portions of the game's UI, with a PDA controlling your "email, contacts, map, music player, GPS, [and] stat-tracking." Those stats can be uploaded via Wi-Fi to the Rockstar Social Club, supposedly, to keep obsessive-compulsive track of your in-game progress.
Gameplay-wise, Chinatown Wars will feature D-pad aiming and auto targeting via the R button, as well as "tasteful" mini-games — no lap dances? The arsenal is said to include a flamethrower and chain gun, and the wanted system looks to be modified to maybe shun GTA IV's "out of sight, out of mind" mechanic for one that requires the player to "disable police cars any way possible."
More details after the jump.
- True GTA game - sandbox gameplay, open-world environment, gritty crime narrative.
- M-rating
- Isometric camera angle
- Cel-shaded polygons w/ black borders
- good touch-screen implementation - "tasteful" minigames, streamlining interface
- UI based on a PDA - hub for email, contacts, map, music player, GPS, stat-tracking
- stats uploaded to Rockstar Social Club website via Wi-Fi
- finger-sized icons
- missions designed for shorter periods of play, arcade quality
- aiming with control pad, auto targeting with R button
- subtle autosteer
- if you fail a mission, you can jump back to the action sequence
- chain gun, flamethrower
- good portion of Liberty City is modeled in the game (different routes than console games)
- no probems with load times, draw-in or frame rate
- lots of pedestrians, cars, etc on screen
- Wanted system - objective is to disable police cars any way possible
- real-time weather effects, 24-hour day/night cycle
- lots of radio stations to listen to (more instrumentals than vocals)
- 800,000 lines of hand-optimised source code (hey, the people like the info, right?)
- no details yet on multiplayer/Wi-Fi features
Unfortunately, we don't have the new November issue of Nintendo Power on hand to verify these details, nor do we have scans of the magazine at the ready (because that's naughty), so we should consider this rumour for now. We'll be checking in with Rockstar to see if this is all legit while we wait with breathless anticipation for our copy of NIntendo Power to show up.

All I wish is for them to retain the look of II, but I can dream... and on the cellphone, will I get calls from my "friends" for some tee-tees? and then get a thumbs down from them?

At first I was kinda disappointed with the idea of an isometric view, but then I thought about it more and I think it may work out okay. At least it isn't top-down like in the original GTA games.
I look forward to hearing more about this game, especially the multiplayer (if it even has any).

@Amazon_Chris: The isometric viewing perspective. Hm, basically you're viewing the square tiles on a set diagonal. It's pretty common with pixel art, and older games, like FF Tactics, Diablo, Solstice, Age of Empires. Pretty rare nowadays, except maybe in flash games. Oh, there are a couple other perspective types confused for isometric, too. See the Wikipedia Article.

@Amazon_Chris: don't know if you're being sarcastic or not... if not, then think the view point in age of empires or the first sims. a faux-3d perspective.

I for one am happy that they are a adopting a more realistic model for cop pursuit/escape. Personally, I felt very removed from the pseudo-realistic world that was created in GTA IV when I'd run into a cop car, or even punch an officer in the face, and then drive away for like three to five seconds and be in the clear again. It kind of took me away from the experience, and kind of made the police factor a kind of "extra" feature: not really integral to the game(except for moments when the player intentionally seeks to gain a ridiculously high wanted level , or the gamne artificially spikes the wanted level as a part of a mission.)

Yes! What's better than going back to Liberty City again such as in GTA: LCS? Going back a third time except with the DS' crappy 3D graphics! I bet most gamers got sick of the old LC before they finished GTA III back in 2001, let alone going back to it now 7 years later with 1/3 of the hardware.
Fuck it though, someone will find it fun, so more power to them.

Oh, best part of this game: jumping back into the action sequence when you fail a mission. I've failed more missions that I care to admit in GTAIV but the worst part is always driving to said destination or doing this or that before actually getting to the part where I die.

@Orionsaint: Actually the PSP is closer to the PS2 in power. The N64 was more powerful than the PSone, so saying the PSP is a PSone on steroids after saying the DS is an N64 on steroids doesn't really make sense, and actually makes it sound like the DS is more powerful than the PSP which is obviously not the case.

@White-Sharingan:
Agreed; the PSP is a better system for GTA than the DS.
However, considering the massive install base of the DS, this is a no-brainer for Rockstar.
You know tons of kids under 17 are still going to get this game.
Also, there is a strong possibility this could be good.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on it.

He's referring to the Liberty City from GTA III and GTA:LCS; the Liberty City in GTA IV doesn't even closely resemble the city from the previous games (it looks a lot more like NYC). I'm pretty sick of the old Liberty City myself, but I'd kill to revisit Vice City again...

This is weird. Not saying that the game will "fail" but a GTA on the DS? Seems ... weird =P But, after reading the fact sheet I can say that this might work.
Most likely it wont have that console feel, but as long it works for short periods of time all is fine =)

I was hoping for it not to be a "true GTA game". Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the experience will inevitably pale in comparison to the home console games. Unless Rockstar have a number of tricks up their collective sleeve to reinvent the franchise on the DS.

@Arlips:
I've always heard the PSP was like the PSone, but sorta in the middle, between PSone and PS2. Hmm, was the N64 more powerful than the PSone? Maybe, but it was limited by it's storage capacity. I can't imagine FF7 on N64. Not even Tekken 3 on N64. Mario64 was easily ported to the DS because it was basically N64 hardware. No?

@Antiterra: I dunno...I'd say just prepare yourself for on of those "Killer Instinct on the original Gameboy" moments just to be on the safe side.
One of the unfortunate and inevitable outcomes of Nintendo's unwavering adherence to Gunpei Yokoi's philosophy is the staggering number of laughably bad ports and offshoots of contemporary franchises appearing on their handhelds.

@Orionsaint: It's hard to peg the PSP because it does certain things worse than the PlayStation 2, others about the same, and certain things better.
I've generally considered it something along the lines of a PlayStation 1.75. It's games tend to have lower polygon counts and lower-res textures, but often handle effects as well or better than many PlayStation 2 titles.
Take a look at Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow to see what I mean...it definitely runs the gamut of better-worse-same. Of course it (along with a handful of other games) looks so good on the small screen that you'll just be thinking "Holy fucking shit, I can't believe this is a handheld game."
