Left 4 Dead On The DS? Yeah, Right.
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 6:20 AM on September 19, 2008
Not content with ruining Fallout 3, the Australian Classification Board is now just playing mind games with us.
Yesterday the Board posted a classification notice for LEFT 4 DEAD Game (Nintendo DS).
We had to screen cap this so we could prove to ourselves so that it really happened and they couldn't delete it and start whistling innocently while we ran around, wild-eyed like someone on the Twilight Zone who has realised that it is indeed a cookbook.
We contacted Valve's Doug Lombardi who quickly brushed off the OFLC's clever ruse as "Nonsense".
Just step off, Australian Government. We are on to you.

Dementium was a surprisingly cool and scary game.
i bought it from a bargain bin for $15 but never finished it because the controls were not good for my already carpal-tunnel prone hands.

@Parsifal: i dunno man i think it would kinda suck. i remember playing Dementium: The Ward and those zombies looked kind of whack. most on screen were maybeeee 6 or 7 tops.

@jook:
But the colour scheme is quite Kotaku-esque.

I can see it being ported to the DS but not the PS3.

@Chewbenator: Yes, because no other sites on the internet use a sidebar navigation panel and a header with their logo and such on the top.
Anyway, what's the deal with Australia putting up things like this anyway?
Trying to get it out there "just in case?"

Torgen got his apology faceplate but not his fixed GH3 disc

@Parsifal: Wouldn't Dementium: The Ward answer that question? And there was a DS port of the original RE.

@NeonLight: I think most zombies in Left 4 Dead keep that cookbook readily available.

Valve and Nintendo? Maybe not now, but I do see it happening.

This is probably not coming though, but if it were, how many zombies onscreen do you think the DS Lite could crank out at once?

This could be cool. It'd be great for local play.
I have my doubts though, how could they have kept it secret this long? (assuming its quite close to done if it's being rated)

Perhaps its a mistake? Just maybe? You know, some poor intern who's doing data entry picked the wrong choice in a drop down box or something? Not everything is some great Australian conspiracy to bring gaming to ruin.
What the fuck is it with you lot and taking every oppurtunity to have a crack at Australia?

Any word on what Valve has to say about this? Obviously they're going to be denying this if this were true (which I doubt).
Nice of Stuart to slide in a Twilight Zone reference of sorts. I can understand if some commenters here don't know what the Twilight Zone is. I still like that show (the original black and white one).
Then again, if this were true it would make a lot of sense wouldn't it? I mean the DS is a very viable platform and who doesn't want some zombie-slaying action on the go?

Woah! I can picture it now; there is a full 5 zombies on screen at a time that all look exactly the same. Intense.

The Fallout 3 drugs reference scandal kind of pushed me over the edge. I was shocked by the idiocy of that thread.
But I just don't see how this; which is mostly likely a simple case of human error, is liscense to start having a go at the ratings board, or Australia in general.
If for instance the OFLC decided to ban Left4Dead or something, then maybe you might have a case. Australian gamers would be fucking pissed too, you know. But that quite clearly isn't the case.
Bah, we should just lock up the Australian Creative Assembly team and threaten to withhold our half of Empire: Total War.

@Disgruntled Aussie Gamer: This whole "Australia ruined Fallout 3" mess is a load of shit. Seriously. I've been playing through Fallout 1 and 2, and there's no fucking morphine or crack - there's "Psycho", "Rad-X", "Mentats". Fallout 3 won't be any worse for having a similar naming scheme. It's set 200 years after a nuclear war for fucks sake.

@NeonLight: Still one of my favorite episodes to this day simply because of the cheese factor in the last 3 minutes. The delivery of that last line made me laugh my ass off. It was an engaging episode the whole way through and then to be given a blunt, corny solution to the whole dilemma just ruined it all....but in a campy, awesome way.

Wow. Really? There's not enough Aussie* bashing over this?
If McDonalds started serving only Soyshakes because some people are might be lactose intolerant, who do you blame? The kid that might puke everywhere, or the company that made a sweeping decision based on a minority market?
Bethesda made the decision. They can claim the OFLC was the catalyst all they want, just like I can shoot someone and blame GTA IV. In the end, the decision is Besthesda's to make and they made it. Their call. Their decision. Their responsibility. They even said as much in their press release.
Get off our Australia's backs. The issue is wearing thin. We have enough to deal with regarding the former OFLC as it is without you (mistakenly) adding shit to the fan.

@DONAR: Indeed. Don't blame Australians for this. Bethesda are the ones who ruined Fallout 3 (and not just by changing drug names, either).
